Osmo Unknown and the Eightpenny Woods Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

“I loved every speck of it.” —Kelly Barnhill, Newbery Medal–winning author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon

From New York Times bestselling author Catherynne M. Valente comes an inventive middle grade fantasy that follows a boy journeying away from the only home he’s ever known and into the magical realm of the dead to fulfill a bargain for his people.

Osmo Unknown hungers for the world beyond his small town. With the life that Littlebridge society has planned for him, the only taste Osmo will ever get are his visits to the edge of the Fourpenny Woods where his mother hunts. Until the unthinkable happens: his mother accidentally kills a Quidnunk, a fearsome and intelligent creature that lives deep in the forest.

None of this should have anything to do with poor Osmo, except that a strange treaty was once formed between the Quidnunx and the people of Littlebridge to ensure that neither group would harm the other. Now that a Quidnunk is dead, as the firstborn child of the hunter who killed her, Osmo must embark on a quest to find the Eightpenny Woods—the mysterious kingdom where all wild forest creatures go when they die—and make amends.

Accompanied by a very rude half-badger, half-wombat named Bonk and an antisocial pangolin girl called Never, it will take all of Osmo’s bravery and cleverness to survive the magic of the Eightpenny Woods to save his town…and make it out alive.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Charmingly dark and darkly charming, a fairy tale that veers between the almost familiar and the wildly unexpected, Valente’s story will delight any reader who is both fierce and gentle, wild and mild, fond of wombats and pangolins and all manner of strange beasts.” -- Ursula Vernon, author of Castle Hangnail

“Valente takes us on a wild journey through the absurd, the mundane, the outlandish, the silly, and the strange, often turning us on our heads. I loved every speck of it.” -- Kelly Barnhill, author of the New York Times bestselling Newbery Medal Winner The Girl Who Drank the Moon

* "This imagination- and description-rich tale is for those enamored by The Phantom Tollbooth and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It’s threaded with laugh-out-loud humor and danger, but ultimately it’s a call for empathy and overcoming adversarial attitudes, which feels exactly right in these divided times." -- Booklist, STARRED REVIEW

An excellent new middle grade novel from Catherynne Valente that combines talking animals and silly puns with moving observations about human nature.

I felt so much kinship with Osmo, a smart but lonely outsider who yearns for connection. And I loved his friends, Never the fiercely introverted pangirlin (that’s girl plus pangolin) and Bonk the Cross, a testy skunk-badger-wombat whose rants were a hilarious delight to read.

They encounter so many strange places and memorable characters in their journey through the underworld—a molten emerald swamp, a party boat full of ghosts, the legendary Captain Badcat (who deserves an entire book of her own, at least!). And the ending was truly emotionally affecting, involving threads of environmentalism and peacemaking.

Recommended for imaginative kids (and adults) who dream of going somewhere Else. Also for fans of Ursula Vernon, Redwall, and Fairyland, Valente's acclaimed middle grade series.

I've been an Amazon customer for over 20 years, and this is the first time I've ever left a review for anything. I adored this book. It's funny, creative, and full of whimsy. The prose is gorgeously exuberant (if you've already experienced Valente's writing style, you know exactly what I mean. If not, you're in for a treat!). The story is both familiar and delightfully fresh, skillfully playing with and then subverting beloved fairy tropes until you're left feeling dizzy and maybe a little punched in the gut, but in the best possible way.

This book is an exquisite fairy tale that is fit for one and all. I found myself in tears rather often just from the shear weight of Valente's words.
This book is laugh-out-loud funny, wickedly smart, and terribly, terribly important.
I am honored to find myself regarded as one of "Mr. D's kids"

Wonderfully written and marvelously narrated, Osmo is family friendly and delightfully deep.

We listened on a long drive and everyone enjoyed it. Ages 50, 11, and 19, for reference.

This was a charming and slightly dark (children so often love slightly dark!) story that offers at its heart the wisdom of kindness and of learning for yourself what others are like, rather than listening to “lore.”

My daughter has listened to this audiobook several times over — I have only caught some of it but what I’ve heard is charming and funny, and she has a great time getting deeper into the story every time she listens. Definitely recommend the audiobook, the narrator uses an amazing range of voices to bring each character to life!

Wow. This book was absolutely magical. In typical Catherynne Valente fashion the world building and the writing of this book transports you directly into the book and transforms the words on the page to a picture playing out in front of you. The characters are sweet and playful and everything you need in a middle grade novel. I hope to read more from this world because I just didn't get enough. As always, when it comes to Valente, this is a 5 star read and one that I highly recommend.
