Suitors and Sabotage Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 118 ratings

Two young people must hide their true feelings for each other while figuring out who means them harm in this cheeky Regency romance from the author of Love, Lies and Spies and Duels & Deception.

Shy aspiring artist Imogene Chively has just had a successful Season in London, complete with a suitor of her father's approval. Imogene is ambivalent about the young gentleman until he comes to visit her at the Chively estate with his younger brother in tow. When her interest is piqued, however, it is for the wrong brother.

Charming Ben Steeple has a secret: despite being an architectural apprentice, he has no drawing aptitude. When Imogene offers to teach him, Ben is soon smitten by the young lady he considers his brother's intended.

But hiding their true feelings becomes the least of their problems when, after a series of "accidents," it becomes apparent that someone means Ben harm. And as their affection for each other grows—despite their efforts to remain just friends—so does the danger. . .

In
Suitors and Sabotage, author Cindy Anstey delivers another witty young adult historical fiction novel that is the perfect mix of sweetly romantic and action-packed.

When Imogene offers to teach him, Ben is soon smitten by the young lady he considers his brother’s intended.Initial ThoughtsI love Cindy Anstey’s writing. I also am obsessed with anything Jane Austen-esque and was super excited to read this book. I have read all of Cindy Anstey’s books now (except for Carols and Chaos because I am saving that for the holiday season). Some Things I LikedThe setting. I just loved the English countryside setting and the time period. The dialogue. True to its Jane Austen tag, this book had totally Austen-worthy banter. I loved the back and forth between Imogen and Ben.Quick read. I really enjoyed that this was a quick read for me. I finished it in one day.One Thing I Wasn’t Crazy AboutEveryone was so clueless. I guess that’s another Austen element in its own way, but everyone was totally shocked when the found out anything.Final ThoughtsI thought this book was a really fun read. I liked that Imogen wasn’t just a damsel in distress kind of lady and she had dreams of her own. She was a strong female lead who didn’t let her family or society tell her what she should do. I loved the Jane Austen connections and was happy to see the way this book ended.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Recommendations for Further ReadingLove, Lies, and Spies by Cindy Anstey – if you liked the Jane Austen vibes and you like main characters who keep secrets from each other, give this book by Cindy Anstey a try.A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn – again, if you like the setting, Jane Austen worthy banter, and mystery in this book, give the Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn a try.Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco – again, if you like the setting, the banter, and strong willed female lead characters, do yourself a favor and check out this series by Kerri Maniscalco. You won’t be able to put it down.

Well written, clever, and heated, Suitors and Sabotage is my favorite of all this talented author's novels, and it most certainly ranks high in my favorite novels. The characters are perfectly portrayed, and the passion of love is so well described. It's cheesy in so the right ways, and entertaining to say the least. One begun, this book is hard to put down. Highly recommend.

I read this book as a buddy read with the wonderful Brittany from Perfectly Tolerable. If you have not checked, her out you really should. She also reviewed this book and you can find her review here. Brittany is wonderful and more on the ball than I am lol she posted her review right after we read the book unlike me who let my reviews pile up.

I really enjoyed this book. Imogene who was given one season for only one reason, to find a suitor, and did she ever with Earnest he is everything that her father had in mind, the firstborn of an influential family. Due to the constant criticism from her parents, she is an anxious person. (Brittany touches more on this in her review) Okay her parents are just downright mean, just to be mean, I really felt for Imogene there was no reason they picked on her the way they did. After the season was over Earnest comes to call and brings his brother Ben along for support. Once Ben sees Imogene’s drawings, he is impressed with her ability to render art. With that common interest, Ben begins bringing Imogene out of her shell and it is such a cute story to watch unfold even if they don’t realize there could be a future for them. Ben and Imogene are at constant war with their feelings since it is Earnest that wants/is supposed to ask for Imogene’s hand. And they do not realize that they have feeling for each other even though it is obvious to everyone else.

I only had one issue with this story and Brittany had the same issue too. Imogene leads Earnest on for far too long. Imogene wants to tell him but is asked not to because her friend is trying to impress Ben and they know that if Earnest leaves then Ben will too. I can’t be too mad about it all since Imogene acknowledges that it isn’t right, so the story does not support that issue but recognizes that it is wrong.

If you enjoy clean Regency Romance/Mystery novels than you should really give this one a chance.

I'm a huge fan of Cindy Anstey and always preorder her books when I hear she has a new release. Suitors and Sabotage did not dissapoint! I enjoyed reading about Imogen and Ben's growing relationship and the mystery around the attacks kept me guessing up until the reveal. I'm already excited to read Carols and Chaos which will focus in on two of the best characters from Suitors and Sabotage.

Thank you to Xpressobooktours, the publisher and NetGalley for an e-arc in exchange for my honest review

Imogen is a young woman whose parents can't wait for her to get married and continue on with the family name. Having said that though they got about it in a very strange way at times, and aren't supportive at all of what Imogen wants. In fact, they are determined for her to marry a young man named Ernest who they think will be perfect for each other. Imogene, on the other hand, could care less. But now she has to court him, and hopefully marry him. The only way she can make it through all of this is with some help of her best friend and her favorite hobby.

Overall this book was okay/enjoyable at times for me. It sadly fell a little flat for me. I thought it was going to be YA historical fiction mystery. Instead, it was more focused on the romance part, and less on the mystery sadly. This was fully my fault for expecting certain things about this book.
Having said that I did like the friendship between Imogen and Emily. They don't have a lot of things in common when it comes to hobbies, but Emily and her family are very supportive of what Imogene wants to do and I loved that. Emily's family was the best and I loved them so much.
As for Ben and Ernest his brother, I was so afraid this was going to go into a really awkward love triangle and it almost did, but thankfully certain things happened that stopped that. I loved the banter between the two brothers, and how they were both very different, and not competitive!
Even with this book not being what I expected it was so close to being a four-star book. It could have been as well if more of the mystery had been talked about. I did figure out who was doing it as well before the end and while I got why it was just kind of meh.
Also please tell me Emily's getting her own novel, because I would love to learn more about her!

Perfection. I think I may have to admit now that Cindy Anstey is in my top five favourite authors. I never thought I would feel this way because I am a fantasy fan through and through. I don’t even miss the magic in her stories however because the landscapes, friendships and blossoming love feel magical. All of the characters feel like real people and I would certainly want to be friends with them. This book, in particular, gave me strong Downton Abbey vibes!! I loved the sabotage part of this book, it kept me turning the pages as fast as I possibly could. I really cannot recommend this enough. I especially love Anstey’s books in the springtime, but I’m so excited for her next book at Christmas. Yes, I already have it preordered!
