The Lion and the Dog (Animal Stories for Kids Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

From the author of beloved Joyful Trouble, an Amazon Bestseller!

A beautiful picture book with musical rhymes that celebrates diversity and promotes kindness, sure to strike a chord with the many fans of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”.

When a lion is removed from his natural habitat, forced to leave his African land and his pride behind and crowned King of Animals in a zoo, but acts out and becomes a secluded, captive beast all humans give up hope. Only a patient and observant brown little dog stands by his side and, through his optimism and kindness, turns the beast into a friend for life.

NEW EDITION. Enjoy full color photographs of lion in their natural habitat as well as: * A charming story with a positive message and a scene for EACH SEASON * Why do male lions have manes? * Why are lions so lazy?
Inspired by the true story of Bonedigger, the disabled lion and the friendly Dachshund Milo who proved that friendship knows no boundaries, “The Lion and the Dog” is a brilliant, colourful tale that shines when read aloud and is a definitive must-have for all collections.

"Inspired by a true story, The Lion and the Dog by Patricia Furstenberg is a heartwarming story about the friendship between a Dachshund dog, Milo, and Leo the lion who lives in the heart of a zoo.
The dog’s best friend is the frog whom he meets one day on his morning walk. The lion is brought in one day and kept in a cage for people to say WOW, and he is crowned as the King of the Zoo. Everyone feared the lion while the Dog was free to roam around the zoo. Milo the dog meets Leo the lion across the cage bars. Milo wants to share his joy with the lion. Leo is rude but Milo is not going to give up. The lion tries to scare Milo by saying he is from Africa and has seen the world. He also roars, showing off his huge teeth. Things change when Leo falls sick and readers get to see Leo and Milo becoming friends. I like the
beautiful messages of friendship, faith, optimism, and kindness conveyed through this story.
The rhyme scheme makes it a lyrical read, making it appealing to the children.
The illustrations are wonderful and they give clarity to the author’s concept and words.
What a beautiful story for parents to read out to children and help them understand
the true meaning of friendship and how it has no boundaries!
I would recommend the story for
read aloud sessions in classrooms for students to understand that the right friends will come along if one has faith, and there is no need to feel lonely." A 5 STARS Readers’ Favorite Review*****

The lion has had to leave his homeland in Africa, and go and live in a zoo. It is so far removed from his natural habitat that he becomes unhappy and grumpy. The humans at the zoo seem to give up on him and he appears to get forgotten about. It’s not until a little brown dog shows him love and friendship that the lion begins to live again.

The book was inspired by a true story of a disabled lion and an affectionate little daschund. These two animals form an unlikely bond. Following daily visits from the little dog, the lion begins to cheer up. He soon appreciates how much of a friend the dog has become to him.

I like the important underlying messages behind the story. It shows that friendship can happen despite being from two different races. The dog doesn’t give up on the lion. His faith and daily persistence in trying to cheer the lion up is rewarded with a lovely friendship. That is what friendship is about – supporting one another and being there despite the hurdles. Friends don’t give up.

The story is in rhyme format. The words don’t always rhyme in a fluid sense. I didn’t think this mattered. What’s important is the story and the messages behind it.

The illustrations are bright and depict what is happening in each stage of the story. There are lots of other animals to spot in the illustrations. My daughter enjoyed pointing them out and naming them as I read the story to her. She was sad for the lion but was so pleased when the lion became friends with the dog and cheered up.

This is a lovely, heartwarming story for children to enjoy.

Another excellent book from Patricia Furstenberg.

What a wonderful children's picture that is just full of vibrant illustrations that will keep the young reader enthralled as the story goes on. It tells the story of a lion at a zoo who makes friends with a dog even though the other animals tell them that should not be possible. The story is told in nifty little rhymes to draw the readers attention while still then a valuable life lesson. Would work well for story time. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Another delightful story from Patricia Furstenberg, based on the true story between a lion and a daschund.

Taken from his home, to a zoo, where he is quickly forgotten once life becomes routine. That is until a fearless little brown dog begins to visit and gives the gift of friendship to the unlikeliest companion in the most challenging of circumstances.

A message that translates to us all. We could all use a friend but moreover we can all BE one, and that really can make the difference.

A lovely message, with bright, colourful illustrations and lots of lovely rhyming text to engage the children.

Another beautifully written and touching story by a very accomplished author. Furstenberg has a gift for bringing animals and their interactions with other animals and humans to life. Whilst her books are aimed at children this and her other children’s books would also appeal to adults. This is a lovely story of seeing beyond what is obvious to bring out what is real and true. It also celebrates diversity in friendships and the importance place that this diversity plays in life. Children will love the simple, yet rhythmic nature that this book adopts. Once again a successful piece of writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little book with a huge message
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 6, 2018
This little book is only 28 pages long but tells a big story. The author Patricia Furstenberg bases her book on the true story of a little Dachshund Milo and a disabled lion called Bonedigger, through her beautiful rhymes and verse. It is a story about loss of family, giving up, determination and friendship.
When the lion is captured and placed in a zoo he has lost everything and everyone that is dear to him and soon doesn’t look or act like the King of the Jungle any more. The only one that doesn’t give up on him is a little dog that goes to see him every day. The lion tries everything possible to make the little dog go away but he just keeps coming back.
This is a beautiful story and knowing that it really happened makes it even more special. It sends out a huge message that there are no limits to friendships no matter how different we all are. It is also about caring enough not to give up when someone is having a really terrible time, that can not be just a quick fix. Just letting someone know you are there when they are ready and that they are not on their own means more than words can say sometimes.
The pictures in the book are simple, colourful and manage to convey that the change in the lion didn’t happen quickly but through many months as the seasons change. A lovely little book with a story we could all benefit from. Just beautiful.
