SS Totenkopf at War: A History of the Division (Images of War) Kindle Edition
The SS Totenkopf (Death Head) Division even 70 years on retains its formidable and ruthless reputation as a superbly efficient yet murderous formation. It earned this for its actions throughout the Second World War, first in 1940 during the blitzkrieg in Northern France and then on the Eastern Front. The battles at Kharkov and Kurst saw some of the fiercest fighting of that long and terrible campaign. During the long retreat back to the Fatherland the Division fought with customary dogged determination, nay fanaticism. This superbly illustrated work, drawing on images taken by participants, portrays the SS Totenkopfs history from formation through training to the battles in northern France and in Russia.

This elite indoctrinate elite unit were employed ruthless and fanatically efficient into Nazi foes, a waste of resources employed for the utter destruction of the enemy. Great read, specially that the writer exclude the brutal events, as possible ,try to focus on the war exploits of the division.

Well worth the 99 cents e-book edition. However few mentions of it’s war crimes. One noticeable error: book says Totenkopf was part of 6th Panzer Corps from operations near Warsaw to the relief attempt of Budapest (Nov 44 - Mar 45 )whereas it was the IV SS Panzer Corps

An interesting book. My only complaint is that several images are copied from other books. Otherwise the book arrived in perfect condition.

Grande serie

Rare photographs of one of the oldest divisions of the WSS
Reviewed in Germany on April 5, 2018
Pretty good photographs of the men of one of the oldest divisions of the Waffen-SS.
But not all photographs are regarding troops of the Totenkopf-Divison! E.g. page 136: a soldier shown who hurls a stick grenade.
Same photo in "Kampfgruppe Mühlenkamp" page 85 referring to the battle of the Wiking in Poland! The author mixed up soldiers of the Totenkopf with members of different SS-units. He also did not know the rang of the higher German commanders like von Leeb and Fedor von Bock (mentioned as generals in 1941 but already nominated to field marshals). He even doesn`t know the difference between armoured and motorized infantry divisions (page 26). I was very surprised when I recognized that the text for the chapter "Into Battle (1940-1941)" was printed twice in this book. Fortunately only a mistake of the Printer! But due to the low price and the rarity of most of the photographs I give "Totenkopf of war" 4 stars!
