Kate Darwood's life changed dramatically when her biologically father acknowledged her in his will as his daughter. All her young life she'd been taunted by peers in school and by her stepfather as the illegitimate mistake. Now she has the financial security to pursue whatever she wants, only she's promised her half-brother, James never to reveal her connection to him or his father. The scandal would destroy James' mother and be detrimental to James' career as an actor. Yet James wanted very much to be her protective brother, so he took Kate in and they've been living together with the public assumption that they are a couple. Damien Savage was the sought after director-producer in England and Hollywood. Every movie he's involved with turns to career gold. When Damien demands a date with Kate, she feels obligated to agree when she believes that a role James seeks is at stake. Damien holds nothing back in letting Kate know that he desires her and he tries to seduce her into moving in with him. Kate knows only too well what consequences affairs may have and she's aware of how dangerous Damien is to her resolve to steer clear.

Kate is young but she's not totally naïve to the way of men. Damien's pursuit of her is relentless and even though he comes across sometimes as an arrogant brute, we can clearly see that he's totally under Kate's spell and can't keep himself away from her. Kate is a spunky heroine who isn't intimidated by Damien but does fear his increasing power over her own desires. Some may find Damien over the top in arrogance and not see the man Ms. Mortimer gives us glimpses of and doesn't fully reveal until the end of the book. I easily seen what Kate seen and fell in love with. Well done!

I usually like Carole Mortiomer but in my opinion this is not one of her better books. The guy is so insulting of the girl and at times almost forces himself on her. She takes all his verbal abuse and falls in love with him anyway.

Who writes the blurbs on this book for Amazon. Kate is not an actress (she is in business school after attending boarding school), and at no time does she or James tell anyone that they are married. Indeed, her half-brother James has a girlfriend that appears early on in the book. Kate is told that she could be an actress and offered a screen test, but she never pursues it.
Otherwise, a great early Carole Mortimer book.

This is another one of Carole Mortimer's books that I cannot put down. It is about a young woman named Kate Darwood, who is living with her older half-brother, James Saint Just. Thanks to James, Kate has a wonderful career as an actress. Only most peope think that they are lovers, and that includes Damien Savage. He wants Kate to be his lover, and it tears him apart to think that Kate was sleeping with James and God knows who else. Apparently, Kate and Damien do marry. Now, I don't condone Damien's attitude or the rude things that he said to Kate about "who she slept with". But my hearta went to Damien when he learns that Kate was really a virgin; then he becomes humble. He is surprised that Kate doesn't hate him and that she wants to stay with him. Damien tells Kate the truth, that he loves her, and he is surprised but pleased that she also loves him. So I have no choice but to give this book five stars.
