Tumbleweed Christmas Kindle Edition
A shell-shocked veteran. A shattered child. A Christmas miracle.
It’s Christmas in 1953 on the dusty High Plains of West Texas.
It was lonely enough out there before eleven-year-old Bonnie McGrath lost her mother. Now she aches for her daddy’s return from Korea to fill the emptiness that’s been carved out of her heart ever since Mama’s passing.
But the father who left Muleshoe, Texas, three years before has come home as somebody else. After nineteen months in a North Korean prisoner-of-war camp, Beau McGrath has lost the ability to love.
A New Mexican blizzard claims the county’s Christmas trees, and the loss is devastating. A symbol of all the good in Bonnie’s life that has been taken away and is now gone forever.
Beau must replace the trees, but his only solution takes him even farther away from his daughter.
Will the chasm between them grow wide enough that neither of them will ever be able to cross it again?

About the author

Ninie Hammon (rhymes with shiny, not skinny) grew up in Muleshoe, Texas, got a BA in English and theatre from Texas Tech University and snagged a job as a newspaper reporter. She didn't know a thing about journalism, but her editor said if she could write he could teach her the rest of it and if she couldn't write the rest of it didn't matter. She hung in there for a 25-year career as a journalist. As soon as she figured out that making up the facts was a whole lot more fun than reporting them, she turned to fiction and never looked back.
Ninie now writes suspense--every flavor except pistachio: psychological suspense, inspirational suspense, suspense thrillers, paranormal suspense, suspense mysteries.
In every book she keeps this promise to her Loyal Reader: "I will tell you a story in a distinctive voice you'll always recognize, about people as ordinary as you are--people who have been slammed by something they didn’t sign on for, and now they must fight for their lives. Then smack in the middle of their everyday worlds, those people encounter the unexplainable--and it's always the game-changer."

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2017I always read Ninie's books as soon as I get them, and I have loved every one. So I was a little concerned when she said this was not like her other books, but my fears were for nothing. In many ways it's exactly like her other books: there is a demon (the horrors of war), a confused and frightened innocent, a quest that shines a light on the essential goodness of most human beings, a seriously unexpected twist, and an ending you couldn't foresee Sound like Ninie to you? Yeah, I thought so.
As always, her characters are real people just like the ones you run into every day. You know them, love or hate them, and miss them when they're gone. They become so real so quickly that you probably won't even take a break until you know what happens to them (it's short, so you will get some sleep). I was so anxious to barge in, hug Bonnie, and slap her father upside his head, that I had to finish in one sitting.
It is such a simple story, but simple doesn't mean predictable. No, our Ninie doesn't do predictable. What she does do, yet again, is powerful magic in its purest sense. This book is for everyone, and will touch your heart in just the right way; a perfect Christmas story. Thank you, Ninie.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2020This is a story of hope, despair, struggle and eventually redemption. Tumbleweed Christmas is not a terribly long book, but it packs a lot of lessons into those pages. I am writing this review in time for you to order this book and still finish it by Christmas. I recommend you do that today. Especially if you have older kids because they should read it too.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2022Wow. This was so unique and definitely not your average jingle bells and stocking stuffer Christmas book. It was heartfelt and emotional and that ending... I had literal goosebumps and I teared up. I do NOT cry over character deaths or things like that but this... this got to me.
I'll start with themes. A large part revolved around grief and loss and learning to cope and clinging to loved ones rather than pushing them away in your grieving. Yeah...it was pretty intense and you're probably wondering how this is supposed to be a Christmas book. I know, because I felt the same way at first. But no fear, by the end, I was feeling those Christmassy feels.
I loved that their Christmas showcased love and togetherness instead of being materialistic and plastic. There was nothing fake or showy about this.
When it came to characters, these were complex, deep and so very real. Bonnie and her dad were both struggling in their own ways which often resulted in clashes and misunderstandings. The part where she gifts him his medals... that was deep and so sad. This author made it so easy to be able to sympathize with both hurting characters.
The writing was very enjoyable, and the flashbacks flowed beautifully with the present day. I loved the Texas descriptions!
Overall, 4 stars! This is just one of the books that you need to read for yourself. This did deal with loss and minor PTSD to some extent. I'll be checking out more by this author for sure!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2017I have read all of Ninie Hammon’s books and this Novella is another of her marvelous prose. I laughed, I cried and, as with all of Ninie’s books, I felt as if I was part of the story. The poignancy of the tale was what got me the most. You can read the synopsis to know what the story is about. Just know that if you don’t read it, you’re missing out on a wonderful Christmas story. I loved it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2017Loved it! Read it so fast, in spurts, when I had the time, that I will read it again. I just know I missed something subtle as I found out after reading a couple of her previous books the second time around. Please note while this was set at Christmas time, this is not necessarily a Christmas story, but one that can resonate throughout the year. Thank you Ninie Hammon for another wonderful tale that tugs at the heart!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2017This book would make a perfect Christmas gift from grandparents to grandchildren and vice versa.
Recently orphaned 12 years old Bonnie and her father, a Korean War veteran are preparing for the Christmas together while trying to mend their broken souls. It is a short, heartbreaking but also heartwarming story told in the first person by Bonnie. Bonnie voice sounds very authentic and is very touching. I liked the ending and I loved the cover. The only small detail that bothered me was that story was not told in chronological order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different
Beautifully written story. A moving story of a little girl and her father after her father had returned from war and his wife had died. How they both coped with trauma and wat finally brought them together. I could see both sides and felt for both of them. A delightful story and well worth the read.
