Stepping Up: Finding Healing for Your Life and Hope for the Future Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Most cries of pain from teenagers are silent, and too often we only discover the true depth of their pain after suicide or other self-destructive behavior. In Stepping Up, teens speak openly about their struggles with suicide, depression, sex, drug addiction, pregnancy, abuse, bullying, and self-destructive behavior through their personal letters to author Donalyn Powell, a long-time youth and suicide-prevention advocate. To each letter, Powell offers personal and practical hope: even in the darkest situations, the pain will not last, and we are never alone. God has a purpose for each of us that we alone can fulfill, and it is God’s life in us that provides our reason for living, healing for our lives, and hope for the future.

'Stepping Up' gives poignant insight into the deep emotions many teenagers feel. You will cry your way through these first-hand accounts of very troubled teens and find hope through the author's Godly wisdom and encouragement back to them. She encourages them to trust God and that His best for them is still to be discovered. Her heart comes from empathy and compassion and she is so relatable that it ministers to their grief and begins the healing process. Parents must read to gain knowledge into all the pressures that teens feel and have the right advice to give them!

This past week I was in Toronto at an Executive retreat with others. I am a business executive. Sitting in my room the third day I stared at the TV emotional as the story broke of Anthony Bourdain's apparent suicide. In my life I have been impacted by friends and family who have taken their lives. Author Powell has done something masterful with her book. It's what I call "WRITING WITH DESTINY". The letters within the book to Donalyn from suicidal teens are gut wrenching however each one reveals the inner story of this painful world for so many. The letters are answered by Donalyn with words of hope and God that I found wonderful. The is authentic coming from the same desperations in her past. I recommend this book be passed onto anyone who has been impacted directly or indirectly with depression and suicide. Behind each story there is another story of humanity that is covered up. Stories of trauma and abuse, loss of love and believe in self from youth who are supposed to be the golden innocent people that have their happy full lives ahead of themselves. I give this Author a thumbs up for her courage to help others.

The author has written a book that is vital for teens, as well as their parents and peers, to read if they want to understand the difficulties they face. As the Bible says, "in this world we will have tribulation ... but I have overcome the world." This is the book that shows how Christ's love can heal even those on the brink of suicide and give them an abundant life. A beautiful and poignant. book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Too Godly For Me

To be quite honest this was not quite what I had expected.

I appreciated the main stories more than I thought I would, but despite being brought up Roman Catholic I have now found my own way, and I do not dispute for one moment the feelings and sentiments of the author's responses, but they were a bit too may I say 'Christian' for me?
