Smack-dab, in the Middle of Nowhere: A post-apocalyptic comedy (The Waste Stories Book 1) Kindle Edition
* * *
"Pratchetty humour with a hack n slash edge."
"Smack-dab struck me most with just how well it balances comedy with the gritty frankness of life after the apocalypse."
"Colourful characters and seriously funny plot."
- Amazon Reviewers
"Smack-dab, in the Middle of Nowhere" is a standalone post-apocalyptic comedy novel about a grumpy bar owner desperately trying to save her home and livelihood from the perils of the Waste - perils like bandits, tax, and...tourism?
Duncan's Waste Stories series is like Terry Pratchett meets "Fallout", but not as good as either.
* * *
Bert is the takes-no-crap bar owner of Smack-dab, a struggling tavern halfway from nowhere to nowhere else. All around her is the barren, post-apocalyptic Waste, a terrifying place plagued by villainous bandits, ravenous monsters, and Things that go bump in the night (and also eat you).
The Waste is in turmoil. Lord Ash has been overthrown, replaced by a terrifyingly powerful giant hell-bent on taxing anyone and everyone that can help fund his devious master plan. Smack-dab is threatened with total destruction, but Bert has a plan of her own. Can she rally enough help to fend off the bandits?
Strange and hilarious, “Smack-dab, in the Middle of Nowhere” is the fresh new face of the post-apocalypse, even if that face has more creepy mutant eyes than you expected.

Post-apocalyptic New Zealand with a silly twist
Welcome to the Waste. It's big, it's gross, and it's full of life. Unfortunately, that life has lots of eyes and teeth, and it's almost always hungry.
Centuries ago, the Old World popped out for cigarettes and never came home. No one knows how it happened or why, but these days there's an awful lot of craters in the ground, the robotic Overlords are a bit ticked off, everyone's mutated, and why are there so many undead Things running around at night?
Still, society finds a way. Up and down the endless Waste, people thrive - whether they're hunting criminals in the big city, or simply trying to run a business out in the middle of nowhere. Duncan P. Pacey's "Waste Stories" are full of vibrant, colourful characters, hilarious oddity, memorable madness, and heroic tales of personal sacrifice (and florpadorps).

Duncan P. Pacey is a Scottish-born comedy writer living in Auckland, New Zealand. He has long been a proponent of the intelligently silly, taking great inspiration from the likes of Monty Python, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, and the occasional fart joke.
Duncan began his writing career scribbling short fantasy stories on grotty bits of paper as a young child, around 5 or 6 years old. Later, he would go on to study at the NZ Film and Television school in 2011 after being distracted by the allure of film, only to find his way back to writing in 2014 by joining the marketing world as a copywriter.
He has been a professional writer ever since, publishing content on Amazon, Wattpad, YouTube and TikTok.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2020Alternates between quite entertaining and very weird, which I believe was the point. If you like Terry Pratchett style stories give it a go. Five stars, though one appears to have been stolen by bandits.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017There really isn't much comedy like this around - Terry Pratchitt is the first name that comes to mind - so I had high hopes when I saw this and I was not disappointed. Can't wait for the next installment...
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2018Pratchetty humour with a hack n slash edge. Pacey also seems to have worked in this whole other layer into his post-apocalyptic theme where the world of The Waste maps cleverly on to real locations - leaving you guessing at how this whole mess of a landscape / ecosystem came about. Good clean fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2019Duncan Pacey sets us on a hilarious post apocalyptic adventure in Smack-Dab in the Middle of Nowhere! Bar owner Bert must face off against bandits, vicious tyrants, and even mutant monsters as she tries to survive the perils of the Wastes. I absolutely loved Pacey’s humor and his descriptions of this tongue-in-cheek twisted world! This one is Borderlands if it was written by Terry Pratchett so check it out if you love either of those!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019I really loved this book maybe not for the comedy.However it is in one of my favorite world types in anything, I love post apocalyptic worlds. I love how the world could look, or how people act when they're are no rules. It is just a fun and exciting story type. Duncan you have done well for your first novel I look forward to the next. I hope others come to enjoy this as I have (My mom who owns this account will read it too!)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2017Smack-dab struck me most with just how well it balances comedy with the gritty frankness of life after the apocalypse. I found it gripping right from the first chapter. Awesome characters are buffeted by a striking narrator who adds an extra dimension to the novel. Pacey has killed it with this one and leaves the reader looking forward to whatever work comes next.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2018Absolutely fantastic read, exceptionally well-paced and structured for a first novel. Very compelling and likeable characters, with a healthy quantity of heart and wit. Would recommend to any fans of Pratchett or post-apocalyptic worlds, that aren't averse to gore in their reading material. Looking forward to seeing more from Duncan and from the staff of Smack-Dab!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2018Great first novel by promising young writer Duncan P Pacey. Colourful characters and seriously funny plot. A good read from beginning to end.
