Burning Ridge: A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 2,430 ratings

Featuring Mattie Cobb and her police dog partner, Robo, this fourth installment in the critically acclaimed Timber Creek K-9 series is just the treat for animal lovers and fans of Alex Kava.

On a rugged Colorado mountain ridge, Mattie Cobb and her police dog partner, Robo, make a grisly discovery—and become the targets of a ruthless killer.

Colorado’s Redstone Ridge is a place of extraordinary beauty, but this rugged mountain wilderness harbors a horrifying secret. When a charred body is discovered in a shallow grave on the ridge, officer Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner Robo are called in to spearhead the investigation. But this is no ordinary crime—and it soon becomes clear that Mattie has a close personal connection to the dead man.

Joined by local veterinarian Cole Walker, the pair scours the mountaintop for evidence and makes another gruesome discovery: the skeletonized remains of two adults and a child. And then, the unthinkable happens. Could Mattie become the next victim in the murderer’s deadly game?

A deranged killer torments Mattie with a litany of dark secrets that call into question her very identity. As a towering blaze races across the ridge, Cole and Robo search desperately for her—but time is running out.

“Mizushima delivers a sufficiently complicated plot, well-developed interpersonal relationships, awe-inspiring landscape descriptions, and some excruciatingly vivid action.”
Publishers Weekly

“Mizushima boldly emphasizes her heroine’s history, connecting Mattie’s past with her current case and forcing Mattie to take a leap and share her story with colleagues and friends in order to catch the killer. The development of an extensive backstory over a multibook arch pays off.”
Kirkus Reviews

“An intense mystery that emphasizes the abilities of Robo and his partnership with Mattie. Combining a police procedural with Mattie’s personal story creates an anxiety-inducing novel that will remind readers of Nevada Barr’s books.”
Library Journal

Burning Ridge is a well-told, solid mystery peppered with fascinating details of K-9 police work.”
Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine

“The Mattie-Robo pairing makes these stories appealing to both mystery lovers and animal lovers. This volume tightens the screws on them, showing more of their strengths and vulnerabilities.”
Reviewing the Evidence

“Books like
Burning Ridge make me appreciate the series format so much, because . . . characters become so real, they feel like friends. Mizushima’s sleight of hand as a genre writer (she’s particularly adept at red herrings) only makes this fine series that much more enjoyable. I’m very much looking forward to my next encounter with Mattie Cobb.”
Mystery Scene

“A fast-paced and engrossing police procedural.”
Crimespree Magazine

“Another original, deftly crafted and simply riveting mystery by Margaret Mizushima.”
Midwest Book Review

“[Mizushima] has created some very memorable and interesting people...Highly recommended.”

Terrifying, twisty, and emotional! I love the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series!
Burning Ridge is the fourth book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery with a twisty, emotional, and terrifying storyline that had me glued to the pages! The characters in this series have become like family. It's rare for me to get emotional when events happen to characters in the novels I frequently read. That said, I discovered that certain events, good or bad, happen to the characters in this series, I'm not entirely immune to the emotional impact taking place.I'm very sad to have come to the final story of Mattie and Robo, at least for now, but it's my hope that Margaret Mizushima will be continuing with the Timber Creek Mystery series and that the next book will come out soon! This is one of my favorite book series!I'd like to thank NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books, and Margaret Mizushima for giving me this advanced copy to read in return for my honest review.

Margaret Mizushima has created an unforgettable mystery series. I started reading book 1 5 days ago and just finished book 4. Mattie Cobb, Cole Walker, Robo and the rest of her characters are believable and people you instantly want to be in your community. This series is a must read.

I like good mysteries with K9’s and Margaret Mizushima delivers. Each book carries a little more depth into our Protagonist and her clever, lovable but working canine Robo!
The characters are believable and the mystery just out of reach with a few good red herrings. Solid police and K9 procedure and on point Vet medical experience. And nice descriptions of the Colorado ridge, timberland, field and town of Timber Creek.
I’m off to the next one. Great reading.

This is an incredible author. She really knows how to weave a dog mystery. I'm not going to detail the plot, just to say that the author makes this book a real page-turner. The characters are people you would root for, their foibles, understandable. If you like dog mysteries, this series is THE BEST! The author understands Police K-9 dogs, and the veterinary elements that make the story engaging. And the TOTALLY BEST part of the story is that the author conveys the bond between a working dog and his/her handler. This book in the series provides great insight into the background of the handler. The book is well written, well edited, and a GREAT READ.

Love it, love it, love. The mainstay character, Mattie Dobbs is a character that you just invest yourself with as well as with Robo, her K-9 partner and all the surrounding characters become your family too. I love the issues brought up and how they are assessed and dealt with. If you want a clean, intriguing and addictive series to read, make it this one.

This was a powerful story where we learned so much about Mattie. Her bond with Robo just seems to keep growing and I love that. I was pulled in right from the beginning and didn’t want to stop reading until the end. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

This series was recommended to me by my friend Judy Crudele and it just gets better with every outing! It is set in Colorado, and the setting is another magnificent character in the series. There's more depth to the characters as we learn more about them, and watching Robo solve crime after crime never gets old. I never read and don't enjoy romance novels, and so the budding relationship between protagonist Mattie Cobb and the veterinarian Cole Walker is a concern to me. I hope this doesn't turn into a romance/relationship series after all. Cole seems to be thinking about marriage. Don't do it, Mattie!

This author has a wonderful writing style that keeps me reading through the night...i am an animal lover and her books (this is one of a series) star a K-9 dog and policewoman team who solve murder mysteries in the Colorado mountains. Her knowledge of and understanding of animal behaviour (there are lots of horses in her stories too) is exceptional which adds credibility to her stories. I highly recommend it (and the whole series) for both adults and youth who enjoy adventures in the great outdoors.

I love this series. It is a lot like Donna Ball's Raine Stockton K9 series which is also fabulous - tracking dogs, solving murders. Enjoyable, easy read, with great characters and subplots. Wonderful way to spend an afternoon. If you are a lover of dogs and cosy mysteries, then this series is for you.
