All the Lovely Children Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 262 ratings

"All in all, Nance has done a marvelous job in creating a well-written, suspenseful novel. His language is crisp and fresh, and his world-building is authentic, and his pacing just fast enough to keep readers at the edge of their seat, but slow enough to let them enjoy the ride. He has crafted a compelling, engrossing novel with more than one scene of gritty-realism that will prickle the back of your neck." Compulsive Reader Review

Charly Bloom’s life took a wrong turn that has left her alone and frustrated. When she gets a call from an old flame, she returns to her hometown to investigate the disappearances of four children. The abductions are eerily similar to a set of previous crimes.

Two decades ago, Charly and her two friends decided to play amateur detectives and help find a girl who was stolen from her home. Then another girl went missing. Clues overlooked by the inept sheriff left only one child to survive: Charly. She managed to fight back and kill the Snatcher. Or so everyone thought.

Is the Snatcher back, or is there a copycat? Charly must face her past and her own personal demons in a race against time to save the latest victim.

All the children.. are going missing..
"The morning began with a stop downtown. I wandered the park, which sure seemed bigger than when I was a kid. I cast a wary eye at the sheriff's department across the street and wondered if Kit was in. If so, should I go talk to him? Not yet. Instead, I went over to Le Bistro and looked at the park from that perspective. If Savannah Smallwood left the restaurant and walked straight across the street, she'd be at the playground. At twelve, she might have been too old for a swing set, teeter-totter, and merry-go-round. Perhaps she'd gone exploring around the park. That's what I would have done at that age."....... There are four missing children in Charly Bloom’s hometown. Returning there will be painful. Charly was also once a victim of a child abduction, some twenty years ago. She managed to get away, and was thought to have killed the kidnapper, known as the “Snatcher.” Can Charly return home and help the latest victims? Will what happened in the past guide her to the answers? Is the “Snatcher” really dead? Is it a copy cat? Charly has worked in law enforcement. Her former childhood friend, Kit, is now the sheriff of their hometown. Kit thinks Charly can help them. She figured it out back in 1959 didn’t she? The story goes back and forth between 1959 and the first kidnappings, to 1982 when they start again. Told with vivid description and detail, you can feel yourself being pulled in. A different time and place. In this case the story takes place in a place called Temperance, North Carolina. Carefully woven twists and turns made for a great if not disturbing read. The only thing that kept me from a five star review would be some story content. While some may not find it disturbing, I find anything involving children and sexual violence out my reading taste. While it’s not used in a flamboyant manner, it’s still unsettling. Then again serial killers are disturbing. I’d still give this book a fair chance and feel it’s worth a read.

All the Lovely Children by Andrew Nance is at least two mystery novels in one and some readers might count it as three. Two mysteries are different in time but similar in type of crime. The third mystery is the surprise ending. It is a shocker and one of those endings I cannot see anyone predicting.

Everything revolves around Charly Bloom. Nance uses Charly to present the first two mysteries in tandem for the reader. The forty-two chapters have titles that alternate between the Summer of ’59 and the Autumn of ’82. Charly presents the first mystery as reminiscences of events in 1959 while she is working on a similar series of crimes in 1982, the present time for this novel. Four girls died in 1959 when Charly was thirteen years old. The Sheriff of Temperance in the past was incompetent. The Sheriff of today has a history with Charly. Charly was a “Nancy Drew” type as a teenager. She felt that she and her friends Bobby and Micah Lee could do a more thorough investigation than Sheriff Rysdale. Ultimately, they were right as Charly discovered and killed the kidnapper known as the Snatcher. This is not a spoiler because readers do not know who the Snatcher is. Charly will not reveal this element of her memory until near the end of the novel.

Charly will tease the readers with her knowledge of the identity. The new sheriff, Kris, remembers Charly’s contributions in the past that led to the former serial killer’s death. Now that the killings have begun again with the same methods of torture, cruelty, and ultimately death, Kris invites Charly home to Temperance to assist in the investigation. After her departure from Temperance, Charly had gone into a career of law enforcement with the SIB (State Investigative Bureau) but had been forced to resign over office politics issues. In her work with the new Sheriff, Kit, and as she reveals her thoughts and memories to former friends, Charly makes remarks that will tease the reader about the earlier killings. A typical remark: “Of course if any of us had thought to think logically, we would have caught the killer earlier. It was obvious.”

It is not obvious to the reader and the identity of the 1959 killer is one of the early surprises of the novel. There are enough distractors that I was surprised. But that earlier killer died. It cannot be the same one abducting young girls today. The new one is named “Copycat.” Charly does not know this one in present-day 1982. She and the reader will be surprised at the same time.

Just as Charly did when she was a teenager, Charly will be off on her own a lot in her investigation. All her friends criticize her for this. The first killer almost finished Charly’s life; her friends fear this one will succeed. Charly has many allies throughout the novel despite the fact they constantly criticize her efforts. Nance displays rich lives for her characters; some even have descriptive nicknames like Handsome George. Charly has her enemies, of course. Some of the more colorful are in motorcycle gangs and have titles such as “Grizz” and “Preacher.”

Nance’s task in the telling of this story was to not write spoilers of her own plots. This novel does not sink to a humdrum recitation of character flaws that affect story elements in a linear fashion. It is fast-paced and well nuanced with many distractors to keep the reader guessing. I gave this four plus Amazon stars. It is worth much more than the Amazon purchase price of USD 0.99.

Having ghosts help with the investigation was frustrating. When a mystery is solved only with the help of super natural forces it disappoints. It's as if the author just couldn't figure it out so he adds clues from the dead that wouldn't otherwise be there. It diminishes the believability of the whole book. Also, it wasn't that hard to figure out who the bad guy was long before the ending. I was actually hoping that I was wrong about the bad guy and there would be a surprise ending...NOPE!

I loved the writing in this book. The story went back and forth between the youthful days and the current time of the main character. It helped me to better relate to her and why she wanted to be a police investigator. It made her very real. The story itself is quite raw and may be too explicit for some but it definitely kept me reading and wanting justice to be done.

This book is absolutely full of suspense and takes twists and turns which are quite unexpected. The end of the book had me in tears. The narration was particularly excellent in keeping with the emotion of the events taking place and in keeping the reader intrigued. I really enjoyed how the time period changed with each chapter relating the main character to the events in the past and in her present. At times be aware that the language is quite vulgar in keeping with the tone of the story. Well written and narrated.

Can put down at anytime & pick up later - not compulsive reading.
Doesn't capture you like the best psychological thriller, lacks the excitement to capture your imagination - didnt feel empathy to any characters.
Well, Solomon could be the exception.
