A War-Torn Countryside Is No Place for a Lady
Mercy Lytton is a lady like none other. Raised amongst the Mohawks, she straddles two cultures, yet each are united in one cause. . .to defeat the French. Born with a rare gift of unusually keen eyesight, she is chosen as a scout to accompany a team of men on a dangerous mission. Yet it is not her life that is threatened. It is her heart. Condemned as a traitor, Elias Dubois faces the gallows. At the last minute, he is offered his freedom if he consents to accompany a stolen shipment of French gold to a nearby fort—but he is the one they stole it from in the first place. It turns out that the real thief is the beguiling woman, Mercy Lytton, for she steals his every waking thought. Can love survive divided loyalties in a backcountry wilderness?

Review
A must for all who love period pieces. I gave it five stars only because you can’t go higher.
― Manhattan Book Review Published On: 2018-09-12“Taut and timeless, the heart of liberty beats strong and sure in this breathless Colonial tale where the counterfeit marriage of two patriots is as divided as the fledgling nation for which they fight. Steeped in rich historical adventure, The Captured Bride will not only capture your heart and your sleep, but inspire your soul.”
–Julie Lessman, award-winning author of The Daughters of Boston, Winds of Change, and Isle of Hope series
“Michelle Griep is at the top of her game with The Captured Bride, a riveting tale of divided loyalties and enduring love set in colonial America. The exciting plot is filled with intrigue and danger, and the characters so real, they practically jump off the page. This is one for the keeper shelf!”
–Margaret Brownley, New York Times bestselling author and author of Cowboy Charm School
“What an adventure! Michelle Griep’s beautifully written, intricately plotted story blends fascinating details of life during the French and Indian War with unforgettable characters and high-stakes adventure. The Captured Bride should come with a warning: Reading this book may lead to sleepless nights as you tell yourself, ‘Just one more chapter, just one more.’ ”
–Amanda Cabot, bestselling author of A Borrowed Dream
“Michelle Griep has done it again—sweeping adventure, a man of honor, a woman of strength, heart-stopping romance, and a pace that will not let you go! Venture with Mercy and Elias deep into the wilderness of Upstate New York during the French and Indian War, and taste the peril that so often defined the American colonial era, weathered by the courage and faith of those who went before us.”
–Shannon McNear, author of The Counterfeit Tory in The Backcountry Brides Collection and 2014 RITA finalist
“A heart-pounding read, Michelle Griep takes us deep into the New York wilderness where only the tough survive, and only by God’s grace. The characters spring to life from the first pages, keeping you spellbound through each peril while the romance captures your heart. With this epic novel, Griep has firmly established herself as a top frontier writer. A must-read!”
–Misty M. Beller, bestselling author of This Treacherous Journey
The Captured Bride captured me with its fast-paced plot, flesh and bone characters, and gritty portrayal of the American frontier. But it was the can’t-turn-the-page-fast-enough romance between Mercy and Elias that sparked like gunpowder and won me over completely. Well done!
~ Laura Frantz, author of The Lacemaker
I've never met a Michelle Griep book I didn't love! I felt like I was traveling through the colonial backwoods of New York State where dangers, adventures, and mystery confronted the characters at every turn. But the best part? The romance that truly made me breathless. Another winner from this fabulous author!
~ MaryLu Tyndall, author of the best-selling Legacy of the King's Pirates series
Mercy Lytton may be a Captured Bride, but I was captured by her, Elias Dubois, and Matthew Prinn from page one. Griep’s eloquent style, masterful storytelling, and natural infused humor carry you through to the end before you realize it. Totally sigh-worthy!
~ Ane Mulligan, award-winning author of Home to Chapel Springs
“Breathtaking. Unforgettable. Just two of my thoughts as I paused only a few pages into this magnificent story. From the gritty depths of a traitor’s prison to the pristine but dangerous beauty of the lush scenery along the trail, I tumbled into the tale of Mercy and Elias and did not want to put this book down. Griep has outdone herself with this historical masterpiece.”
–Kathleen Y’Barbo, author of Pirate Bride and the Fairweather Key series
Griep delivers a sweet, action-filled romance that will please fans of the series. ― Publishers Weekly Published On: 2018-06-01

About the author

I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I've been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write--except for that graffiti phase I went through as teenager.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2018Mercy Lytton is the strangest thing Elias DuBois has ever seen. A slip of a woman, both Mohawk and white, she is a renowned scout for the English. And her pride and stubbornness, ooh, la, la!! Almost as great as her talent.
Elias DuBois is perhaps the sorriest thing Mercy Lytton has ever seen. Beaten until he is half-dead, condemned as a traitor to the English, DuBois can only escape the hangman’s noose by joining an elaborate scheme. One that forces him and Mercy to work closely together, trust or not. This is the premise of The Captured Bride, Daughters of the Mayflower #3, by Michelle Griep.
Michelle Griep has earned her way onto my favorite authors' list. She can take any period of history (in this case the French and Indian War) and turn it into a living, breathing, “I-dare-you-to-escape-by-the-nape-of your-neck” experience. Griep was once a protégé of Laura Frantz; if you like Frantz, you will love Griep. She has a painter’s way with words that causes me to smile at the stunning visual images she evokes.
A couple of favorite phrases:
“An arrow once shot could not be re-quivered.”
“Strength without common sense was worse than dangerous.”
I highly recommend this book and this series for history lovers or those who want to learn what history may have been. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and NetGalley as well. (I also bought a copy as a gift.) My opinions, for which I am solely responsible, are not influenced by the complimentary copies.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2019This has been the best book in this "Daughters of the Mayflower" series so far, in my opinion.
The capture was a small part of the story. I expected it to be more or show up differently in the story. But it was there, and I guess I'm happy it didn't drag on too long.
I enjoyed this love story. It was sweet and more than the other books. (They actually kissed a few times!)
I continue to enjoy the realism and history of these books. Life was tough back then. Killings happened. People's parents were horrible. It's sad but you can't make these times in history all sunshine and rainbows. That has been a refreshing part of this historical series.
Wish there was an epilogue.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024I loved this story - intriguing characters and a fast-moving, well thought out plot. There's strong chemistry, and then love grows through shared experiences, sacrifice, and trust. Most historical romance novels are like a stay at a budget friendly motel, but Michelle Griep's novels are like staying at a five-star resort.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018Mercy Lytton is stuck between her captive mother's English world and her Native American father's world. Blessed with the gift of unusually good sight, she has spent the last few years scouting for the British, but now they are sending her on the most dangerous mission of her life. Elias Dubois has been captured by the British as a French spy. Destined for death, he is offered a pardon and sent along on Mercy's treacherous mission to drive a heavy load, but given no weapon to fight the various enemies they will face. But all is not what it seems with Elias, and he has his own agenda.
This story was filled with action, intrigue and romance. Both Elias and Mercy were easy to relate to and I liked the pace of their relationship. It felt authentic. Another thing that I thought was particularly well done was each character's inner journey, particularly Mercy. Her struggle to accept and understand her mother was very touching. The spiritual aspect of this book was week done, too. It was woven into the story realistically, without being preachy. All together there was a lot to like in The Captive Bride! I'll be reading more by Michelle Griep.

Fantastic....it’s past one AM here, and I just finished. I couldn’t put it down! The Captured Bride, captured me. This author has the power to pull the reader into a story fairly early on, and she keeps you turning the pages!
The plot was original and so well done, the characters seemed so very real, and the storyline was totally captivating! There are many twists and turns in this read, and I loved the history contained in the pages.
I did receive a book from the publisher. All opinions are my own. I liked it SO much that I preordered a copy which is set to arrive in a few days. This is a wonderful story with a great faith theme, romance story, and historical war story all rolled into a read you must go buy!
“My mother used to tell me there’s more love in Christ for us than therecan ever be brokenness. Only in turning to Himcan you be healed on the inside.”
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2019I’m not a history fan, but I heard so much about this book that I bought it. However, I didn’t read it for several months. The other night I picked it up and thought I would read the first couple of pages—then I couldn’t stop for hours!! I was immediately pulled into the scenes, I was riveted by the characters (who were captivating), and the entire story was unpredictable. Even if I suspected someone was good or bad, the plot never played out as I thought it would—it was so much more complex or shocking. I read the story for three nights straight way into the early morning hours until I finally finished it. I was happy at the outcome, but so bummed that it was over! Along the way, I learned so much about the English, French, and native Indians while going through the treacherous scenes with the characters, and I admired and truly fell in love with Mercy, Elias, Matthew, and Livvy. I still think about them. What an excellent book!!!

Beautiful wording, strong characterization, lots of surprises.
The author’s phrasing and word choices are impeccable. I underlined a ton of sentences because of fabulous wording and I will return to appreciate this aspect. Top of her game indeed!
Her characters were diverse and she kept each character consistent. Kudos for her ability to include indigenous, French, English without putting them in stereotypes. Elias, Mercy, Matthew, Rufus, and Red Bear were especially well drawn.
Just when I thought I knew where the plot was going, around the bend came a surprise. It kept me on my toes and I appreciated where the twists took the story. My only complaint was the ending felt underdeveloped.
Fantastic tale for those who enjoy American history set in the 1700s. Feels like a classic and I am anxious to read again.
