I had this one solved early. Or I thought I did. But in spite of the traditional snowed in with a murderer plot, this one takes an altogether original twist.
Heimrich is a workmanlike detective with a solid combination of skill and insight. I am enjoying this whole series a great deal.
Having recently gone through a winter blackout my sympathy for the characters was profound. And appreciative that my snowed in experience contained no dead bodies or detectives. Thank goodness.

Let Dead Enough Alone (The Captain Heimrich Mysteries) Kindle Edition
Captain Heimrich resolves to get to the bottom of a New Year’s drowning in this mystery from the authors of the “excellent” Mr. and Mrs. North series (The New Yorker).
Capt. M. L. Heimrich of the New York State Police may not have the flash of hard-boiled city detectives, but there’s no lead the intrepid investigator won’t follow until his every hunch is satisfied . . .
A New Year’s Eve party should be filled with champagne, laughter, and the good company of others. And the Halley’s celebration at their country house is exactly that. But the next day has barely dawned when a shocking discovery begins the new year with a dreadful bang.
Psychologist Margaret Halley is convinced her depressed husband drowned himself in the lake. But why would a man intent on suicide walk through a hundred yards of deep snow to jump into a freezing lake when there was a bottle of sleeping pills next to his bed?
As Captain Heimrich investigates the Halleys—and their guests—he has a sinking feeling that someone must have sent John Halley to his watery grave.
Let Dead Enough Alone is the 9th book in the Captain Heimrich Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

About the Author
Frances and Richard Lockridge were some of the most popular names in mystery during the forties and fifties. Having written numerous novels and stories, the husband-and-wife team was most famous for their Mr. and Mrs. North Mysteries. What started in 1936 as a series of stories written for the New Yorker turned into twenty-six novels, including adaptions for Broadway, film, television, and radio. The Lockridges continued writing together until Frances’s death in 1963, after which Richard discontinued the Mr. and Mrs. North series and wrote other works until his own death in 1982.

… if the writing style is the best feature or the downfall of this book. I mean, lots of introspection, savvy use of punctuation, elegant and sophisticated turns of phrase - what is there not to like? At the same time the fractal-like descriptions were quite tiresome. However, all in all it was a very good read.

A mystery with a hint of romance. It's a peek into a time long gone. She turns on the car radio and waits for it to warm up before using the foot dial to find the station. I never heard of such a thing in cars before.. Anyone can read this. There might be a damn or two, maybe a kiss. Nothing taken too far or too explicit, just a nice puzzle to solve and some very likeable people.
