Janice Kay Johnson is the author of sixty-plus books for children and adults. Her first four published romance novels were coauthored with her mother Norma Tadlock Johnson, also a writer who has since published mysteries and children's books on her own. These were "sweet" romance novels, the author hastens to add; she isn't sure they'd have felt comfortable coauthoring passionate love scenes!

Janice graduated from Whitman College with a B.A. in history and then received a master's degree in library science from the University of Washington. She was a branch librarian for a public library system until she began selling her own writing.

She has written six novels for young adults and one picture book for the read-aloud crowd. ROSAMUND was the outgrowth of all those hours spent reading to her own daughters, and of her passion for growing old roses. Two more of her favorite books were historical novels WINTER OF THE RAVEN and THE ISLAND SNATCHERS which she wrote for Tor/Forge. The research was pure indulgence for someone who set out intending to be a historian!

Janice is divorced and has raised her two daughters in a small, rural town north of Seattle, Washington. She's an active volunteer and board member for Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter, and foster kittens often enliven a household that already includes a few more cats than she wants to admit to!

Janice loves writing books about both love and family -- about the way generations connect and the power our earliest experiences have on us throughout life.

In addition to her real name, she has also written under several pseudonyms through the years, including Janice Stevens, Janice Bartlett, Kay Bartlett and Kay Kirby.

Her Superromance novels are frequent finalists for Romance Writers of America RITA awards, and she won the 2008 RITA for Best Contemporary Series Romance for SNOWBOUND.

This Harlequin Intrigue line is different in format from the SuperRomance line that Janice Kay Johnson previously wrote for, but she has adapted well. She is one of the best romantic suspense authors in my opinion, with realistic storylines and characters, who are likeable, and well-paced plots. The Intrigue stories seem to be shorter than SuperRomances; I preferred the SR line and am disappointed that Harlequin discontinued it.
THis is a great story and a recommended read!

Did not put this book down from start to finish. I read it in one sitting. I would give it 4 and a half stars if I could. The half star is because there was no epilogue. Other than that it was great. Highly recommend.

Such a great book. We meet a 3 year old girl who saw her father killed, a doctor who is trying to help her remember what happened, several military men who are doing their best to put their lives back together after tours in the mid-east, and one honest detective who helps to save the day. This book has real people facing events that are. too terrible to think about, caused by the back wash of the drug trade in eastern Oregon. If you haven't read a book by Janice Kay Johnson yet, be warned. She is addictive.

First of all I don't know why this book has two different names. The cover says HIDE THE CHILD but the title says RULES IN BLACKMAIL, so that's kinda weird. And while this looks to be Ms. Johnson's first foray into the "Harlequin Intrigue" line and overall I think she did a pretty decent job, I definitely didn't love it like most of the other reviewers seemed to. The story revolves around an injured army ranger (Gabe) who is charged with protecting a psychologist (Trina) and the traumatized little girl she's fostering (Chloe) who is the only witness to her family's murder...

The first two-thirds of this book I thought was really good. It was quick-paced, had plenty of action, and included a lovely romance too. The connection and chemistry between Gabe and Trina was not only believable, but also very passionate. This did seem to have more sex than most "Intrigue" stories I've read, but that didn't bother me any. I also really liked all three of the main characters, although admittedly Chloe often acted much older than her three years. She was utterly adorable though, and then there was Gabe and Trina who were both very endearing, kind, and likable individuals themselves.

However, the last third of the story is when my interest started to wane. It just seemed to lose some of its steam and became somewhat predictable at that point. Even the bad guys were completely obvious and then there was the ending which felt really rushed and a little incomplete. It seemed like the author must have reached her page limit (as all of these Harlequin Intrigue stories have) and that was that. I'm hoping Ms. Johnson is going to make this story part of a series and if so I have my fingers crossed that we'll get an update on this trio then, especially young Chloe.

Kindle Locations: The story itself ended at 94% and location 2510 of 2667 with the remainder mostly consisting of an excerpt for another book.

While this was an enjoyable book, there were several times where the child in question seemed too mature for a three-year-old. Chloe would have been better cast as a four-year-old, maybe five, with no harm to the plot. As it was, that one detail threw me out of the story a few times.
