An approachable, comprehensive guide to Korean cuisine, featuring 100 recipes to make in your home kitchen.

In
Korean Home Cooking, Sohui Kim shares the authentic Korean flavors found in the dishes at her restaurant and the recipes from her family. Sohui is well-regarded for her sense of sohnmat, a Korean phrase that roughly translates to “taste of the hand,” or an ease and agility with making food taste delicious. With 100 recipes, Korean Home Cooking is a comprehensive look at Korean cuisine, and includes recipes for kimchee, crisp mung bean pancakes, seaweed soup, spicy chicken stew, and japchae noodles and more traditional fare of soondae (blood sausage) and yuk hwe (beef tartare). With Sohui’s guidance, stories from her family, and photographs of her travels in Korea, Korean Home Cooking brings rich cultural traditions into your home kitchen.

Korean Home Cooking is a revelation. It is an education in Korean cuisine and roadmap for bringing it into your kitchen, with recipes that are as smart and delicious as they are achievable. Herein is a body of knowledge that needed a generous cook like Sohui to shape and share it, and it deserves a spot on every serious cook’s bookshelf.” —Peter Mehan, author, co-founder of Lucky Peach

“Like so many other enthusiastic eaters, I am fascinated with the flavors found in Korean cooking. . . . Sohui’s writing welcomes us like a family member to visit her earliest food memories, and she profoundly informs us with the nuanced skill of a natural teacher.” —Michael Anthony, author and executive chef, Grammercy Tavern

“The delectably spiced, colorful Korean dishes in restaurants may seem overwhelming to the American home cook. No longer. In this very detailed and exquisitely illustrated cookbook, Sohui Kim combines knowledge from her Insa kitchen with down-to-earth savvy recalled from her family kitchen.” —Mimi Sheraton, author

“The most useful cookbook released by a New York chef in 2018.” —Grub Street

“Like so many other enthusiastic eaters, I am fascinated with the flavors found in Korean cooking; earthy and tangy flavors, created by using simple ingredients like salt, soybeans, chili peppers, grains, sun and air. Sohui’s writing welcomes us to visit her earliest food memories like a family member and she profoundly informs us with the nuanced skill of a natural teacher.”―
Michael Anthony, author and executive chef, Gramercy Tavern

“Sohui Kim is breaking down barriers of the Korean cuisine, making delicious food ready for a simple Monday dinner or a balling out event for special occasions. Buy the book and open your everyday table to these amazing recipes.”―
Dale Talde, author and chef, Talde

“If you could only choose one cookbook on Korean cuisine, I would opt for this one. It is a gorgeous collection of soulful recipes that are easy to follow and execute. Buy it for the banchan alone.”―
Anita Lo, chef and author

“Naturally attuned to many of the current concerns and fashions in food, the delectably spiced, colorful Korean dishes in restaurants may seem overwhelming to the American home cook. No longer. In this very detailed and exquisitely illustrated cookbook, Sohui Kim combines knowledge from her Insa kitchen with down-to-earth savvy recalled from her family kitchen. It is as much a guide to successful ordering in Korean restaurants, as it is to the adventurous home cook.”―

Fabulous Korean Home-Cooking

Fabulous Korean Home-Cooking
I am not Korean and have now made several recipes from this book, banchan, soups, braised ribs (the baby back ribs are to die for), and juk. Every single one has been a hit with my family, and though a few were more involved, none were terribly hard to make. There is an explanation of all the ingredients, pictures, and recipe procedures are very clear. Our family has really gotten into banchan, so I can make fresh small batches as needed just by reducing the recipes. You can also adjust the recipes to your family's tastes, such as I will reduce the sugar and/or salt in most recipes (not just in this cookbook), and it doesn't affect the end result. I have yet to try making the kimbap - those sushi-like rolls - because I haven't gotten around to buying a bamboo mat to make the rolls, but I'm looking forward to making them soon for summer picnics. This has been my go-to cookbook all winter into the spring. And I have to say, my end results look pretty similar to the pictures, which says a lot for the cookbook!

We've made 4 or 5 recipes from this book so far, and have been impressed with every one. Each recipe has bold and authentic flavors. We made beef bulgogi, bean sprout salad, seaweed soup, and more, and each one has been simple to follow and comes with clear directions. There is a comprehensive korean BBQ section which we are excited to try!

The book looks amazing. I’m just a little annoyed that the outside of the book especially the upper corner and bottom side edge is beat up. The inside is completely new though. Anyhow, everything looks doable and delicious in the book. Can’t wait to try! The only thing is I wish there was a place that tells you the prep time, time it takes to marinate, and the finish time. You have to scan through instructions to get the information.. So, a few of these dishes actually take overnight and up to 3 days to be ready..

Recipes:
Gochujang baby back ribs: spectacular. So so good. I did opt out of the Korean dry red peppers (forgot what it’s called) since my kids can’t eat spicy. Also, I grated 1 tbsp of frozen ginger instead of the chopped ginger or whatever the recipe said..

Recipes in this book taste so much better than the other popular Korean cookbook (you know which one I'm talking about).

Each recipe comes with gorgeous, high quality pictures.

The only downside is they don't include the average time to cook a dish at the beginning of the recipe.

I am a Korean-American that loves Korean food, but live far away from my relatives so I need to follow recipes in order to make delicious Korean food at home and this book has really helped me! Sohui covers all the classic recipes and also so more modern recipes. I especially love all the BBQ marinades and the Tteokbokki recipe is outstanding.

I believe this book is one of the best Korean cookbooks in the market. The recipes I tried did taste authentic and delicious!
It has pictures of the necessary special Korean ingredients you will need, some pictures of “how to”, but the most important thing for me was the easy reading and clear instructions that led to 100% success!

A book definitely for beginners. As I do have experience in cooking Korean dishes, this book did not meet my expectations. However I did find the book, well presented, easy to read and lots of pictures alongside recipes.
