The author (Linda Ruffenach) will take the reader on an exciting written journey about the history of bourbon (locals in Louisville, KY will recognize and appreciate); include is tasty food and beverage recipes - a perfect complement to any collection. And, my favorite -- a flavor wheel with detailed flavor notes and descriptions. Her recipes would please the novice, connoisseur and toughest critic. Bourbon isn’t your Grandads single pour anymore, it’s truly a timeless flavor adventure for any gender! The beautiful photography sets the tone of the page for the reader (warm, relaxing, and thirsty) while the illustrations fit nicely within each topic for those that like to understand the details. Overall an extremely well-written book that is very thought-through and researched; it helped build my confidence to try new things and continue to explore such an artful spirit. Enjoy!

My husband is really into Scotch, and I am contemplating becoming more expert in some other spirit. The ones that interest me are tequila, gin, rum, and- obviously!- bourbon! I am intrigued by bourbon because it's a quintessential USA roots spirit, with so much historical significance- and all native grains, too, which I like conceptually. (I am also very into American roots music...)

Honestly, flavorwise, I'd probably choose tequila... but I really love the history and heritage of bourbon!

This book is very much designed to intrigue one with bourbon! It's got a lot of history, a lot of context, and some great suggestions for "flights" of various bourbons to try- as well as suggestions for note-taking during a tasting, and a very helpful flavor wheel, which helps one to analyze what one prefers.

I give it 4 stars rather than 5 for a few reasons.

I wish it had included more history. One of the reasons bourbon was developed was as a way to utilize corn (maize), before transportation of the raw or even the dried gran was practical. Fermenting and distilling it turned the crop into something far more portable!

On a more petty aspect- I really got annoyed by the "New Age" vocabulary in some ways. People didn't talk- they "shared". I likely would have been OK with that verbal tic, if I had not been so annoyed by the incessant referance to one's "bourbon journey". Exploration? Experimentation? Curiosity? Education? -Any of these would. in proper context, be a great alternative to the incessant "journey"!

Still- this was an interesting introduction to the USA's most native spirit, and it was an entertaining read! Some of the included recipes- not just for cocktails!- look really tasty, too.
