Agathe Singer was born in Normandy on the northern coast of France and left for Paris when she was seventeen to study art and graphic design. She worked as a graphic designer at an advertising agency until 2013, when she left to become a full-time freelance illustrator. Ever since she has filled her life with paints, colors, and joyful projects.

Her studio is set in her Parisian apartment, which she shares with her artist husband and their young daughter. Her work is reminiscent of her childhood dreamy garden, exploring a universe of colorful and naive fauna and flora, with a special attention to birds and flowers.

“I used to spend hours out in the garden and the fields with my brother and sister, building wooden huts, picking leaves for our terrariums, watching birds, climbing trees, inventing stories, and riding our pony on the beach… It was a joyful time in nature and those precious memories nourish my work. In my painting I’m always trying to go back to this feeling of childhood, where the world and the nature is full of joy but also strangeness.”

If you have never used gouache before, this is a good book to use to explore its graphic and arty possibilities. If you are a professional artist with your own style and methodology, this book would not really suit you. I am in between the two and I found it useful and fun to read and get ideas. I have used it as a spring board to researching and studying gouache as a medium.

I love this book! It’s beautiful, colorful and cheerful. As someone not naturally creative, the projects in the book are a fun way to experiment with gouache paints. Definitely a keeper for me!

Pretty basic. Not really what I need right now. Best for beginners. More specific instructions would have been helpful. So that’s it.

I really like this book. Not only is it a great size and format, but the color in the Kindle edition is gorgeous. As for the actual text, there are surprisingly few books on gouache. Most books seem to assume you already know how to work with it or assume you have a lot of watercolor experience. This is one of a few exceptions for beginners. I also really like the supplemental contemporary art series by Walter Foster that produced this text.
