Tank Wrecks of the Eastern Front, 1941–1945 (Images of War) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 66 ratings

A photographic history of the destruction left in the wake of the world’s largest confrontation between mechanized armies: “Highly recommended.” —AMPS Indianapolis

Four years of armored battle on the Eastern Front in the Second World War littered the battlefields with the wrecks of destroyed and disabled tanks, and Anthony Tucker-Jones’s photographic history is a fascinating guide to them. It provides a graphic record of the various types of tank deployed by the Red Army and the Wehrmacht during the largest and most destructive confrontation between mechanized armies in military history.

During the opening stages of the war the German victors regularly photographed and posed with destroyed Soviet armor. Operation Barbarossa left 17,000 smashed Soviet tanks in its wake, and the heavy and medium tanks such as the T-28, T-35, KV-1, and T-34 proved to be a source of endless interest. Once the tide turned, the wrecked and burnt-out panzers the Mk IVs, Tigers, and Panthers were photographed by the victorious Red Army.

As well as tracing the entire course of the war on the Eastern Front through the trail of broken armor, the photographs in this book provide a wide-ranging visual archive of the tank types of the period that will appeal to everyone who is interested in tank warfare and to modelers and wargamers in particular.

This book is cover to cover pictures. Each chapter gives a brief overview of the tanks in that section. It details out the strengths, weaknesses, production timeframes and timelines, and how many were employed and when. It sounds like a lot of reading but the author gets the facts out there in 3-5 pages at most. The rest of each chapter is combat photos taken from the battlefield, usually by the victor, fairly quickly after the battles. Some of the photos are of limited production vehicles or rare variants of those vehicles. It's a good reference book for the historian or modeler and a pretty interesting book for the average military history buff.

Very nice photos and the background info was great. Was hoping for some Kursk photos and was disappointed not to see any considering its importance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of the subject
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 6, 2020
There are some rare and infirmative photos in this book although many of the tanks appear to have been abandoned rather than wrecked and, of those that have suffered noticeable battle damage, it is rarely catastrophic. This, however, reflects the nature of war rather than any failure on the author's part.

All the main German and Russian tank types are covered with fairly brief but, for a book of this size, reasonable descriptions of each. Those seeking detailed facts, data and operational records should look elsewhere.
Photos are well labelled with additional details.

For the modeller, there is plenty to inform and inspire. However, the limitations of WWII-era black and white photography will not aid your understanding of colour schemes.

All in all, an excellent book and great value at this price level.
