About the Author

English professional aviation writer, publisher and historian Graham M Simons is one of the founders of the world famous aviation museum at Duxford near Cambridge where his interest was piqued watching the making of the ‘Battle of Britain’ film there in the late 1960’s and from the days when you could go ‘aircraft spotting’ at London Heathrow and other airports.

From this, and with an engineering background, he progressed to membership of a number of aviation societies, including sitting on the British Aviation Preservation Council, eventually taking the position of Engineering Director with one group. Here he was responsible for overseeing the restoration of a De Havilland DH89 Dragon Rapide airliner to flying condition and placing this aircraft - with official approval ― in the colours and markings of the first aircraft of what was then the Kings Flight. It was during this period that he was contacted by Ian Allen Ltd to write the first ever history of this classic De Havilland type.

Other titles rapidly followed and with a growing number of contacts in both the military and airliners, Graham turned professional in 1987, combining his love of writing with his skills in production to create and publish aviation histories focussed on a variety of subjects.

He is the author of Howard Hughes and the Spruce Goose, Comet! The World’s First Jet Airliner, The Airbus A380: A History, and De Havilland Enterprises: A History, amongst many others published by Pen and Sword Books.

As a budding aviation nut interested in the early jet airliners, I thought this book would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, not quite. The information is there, sometimes too much, but it's presented so poorly. The book is cyclical, repeating itself and rehashing things over and over again.

I would have loved to know more about the 707-700 project, where the 707 was re-engined with CFM56 turbofans. It gets a paragraph. Each variant of the KC-135 (A-R) gets a page or more. And then for some reason, we get a huge info dump on the history of Dan Air? It's a very odd book. And like I said, it keeps repeating and rehashing the same things over and over again.

With proper editing you could slash this book in half without losing information.

As much as he decries pro-Boeing sentiment, the British author never misses an opportunity to criticize the company, as well as the American airlines of the 50s and 60s. There's too much editorial content and personal opinion for a supposedly objective review of the 707's history.

I have no issue with this book being in b&w. It is for sale in the Indian subcontinent only as noted on the back cover. The book is printed and bound in India. What I do have an issue with however, is the kind of paper used in it which is of newspaper quality, the worst I've seen in a book originally published in the UK. As such I cannot include it in my collection and have returned it. What a contrast it is to the author's Boeing 737 book which is largely in color and printed on glossy paper. It was with this expectation that I ordered the author's book on the Boeing 707 but was disappointed. The book starts and ends with the military 707s which account for a total of 133 pp and the commercial 707s for a total of 118pp. I found 32 photos disappointingly familiar. However the 14 instrument panel drawings are excellent. I wouldn't mind retaining this book in my collection even in its b&w state if only the paper quality was at least acceptable. It is not. This is a pity because the book is extremely well written and is engrossing to read but the coarseness of the paper turns me off. I wish the original UK edition of this book is made available to buyers in India.
