This historical fiction series by Roseanna M. White is phenomenal and I am so glad I stumbled upon it. When the book hit my mailbox I had no idea it was the third in the series so I set immediately to reading the first two. A Name Unknown and A Song Unheard are the first two stories featuring Rosemary and Willa, sisters... by selection. The final installment in the "Shadows Over England" takes an additional step into the life of their "brother" Barclay. An Hour Unspent did not disappoint. As we follow Barclay into the culmination of the story, I was enthralled not only by the strong story line but also by the depth in the characters and the attachment I developed for the family. The story was emotional, exciting, with unexpected points and also the lovely and familiar ebb and flow of relationships that we all know and experience. The characters throughout the series, and Barclay in An Hour Unspent was no exception, are both strong and sensitive, spiritual and practical, they are familiar and yet also took me by surprise just as the people in our lives do. White did an amazing job of weaving a historical tale that was well researched and believable. You learn while still being swept away in a intriguing tale. These kinds of stories don't come along that often and I am grateful I had the chance to read all three books! Each chapter left me excited an anticipating the next. Whether it was morality, spirituality, or survival the story challenged my thinking, and also took be to a place of escape. What a beautiful combination in a story.     Barclay Pearce is very good at what he does. His skills honed as a child made him one of London's top thieves and boss of his own band and territory. But now his skills are at the behest of the British Admiralty.

    Barclay's current assignment is to get close to master clockmaker Cecil Manning who may have invented something that would aid the British efforts in the war. And if necessary he is to remove the plans from the Manning household. But Barclay wants to put as much distance between him and his old life as possible and assisting Manning is his preferred method of obtaining Manning's work.

    Barclay's first attempt at meeting with Manning introduces him to Evalina Manning whom he rescues from an attempted mugging. Is it mere coincidence that the daughter of the very man whom Barclay is supposed to connect with threatened within feet of their home? Barclay is determined to discover the identity of this stranger who is where he shouldn't be.

    When Barclay's interest in Manning's work results in an offer to mentor him the intricacies of watch movements Barclay is more than happy to accept. And his interactions with Evalina prove most interesting especially once her mother returns home with Aunt Beatrice in tow. With a broken engagement, Evalina needs Barclay and his family as a means of escape from the tense and oppressive atmosphere that has come home. Evalina is determined to enjoy her little rebellion - after all Barclay is everything her mother doesn't want in a husband for her. He works, doesn't have connections or wealth and as her friends advise her, "have a little fun" while she can. But losing her heart was never a possibility or was it?

    With his responsibilities to his family, Barclay doesn't have time for romance. Nor does he have the means to provide for someone of Evalina's status. The family barely has the means to put enough food on the table every day and now they are saving up for furnishing for their new home. But marriage was something he'd never contemplated for himself until Evalina declared that he was her new best friend.

    As Evalina and Barclay work through what they are feeling with whom they are danger comes closer and everything that they hold dear is threatened. Once again Barclay faces the prospect of having to make his behind enemy lines to save not only a life but to protect England.

    With An Hour Unspent Roseanna White has brought Barclay and his story forward so that the reader gets to know him. Barclay is a most admirable and likable individual and his care and concern for the orphaned and abandoned children of London just makes him that much nobler. This book can be read alone but as good as the other books are, just go ahead and read them all - this way you'll have the backstory without wondering "what are they referring to?". Fans of WWI historical fiction will enjoy this one as it deals with the threats to England found within her borders.

    When Evelina Manning, a suffragist from an well to do London family, meets Barclay Pierce, an orphan a former thief who has turned a new leaf to help his country in the midst of WWI. Barclay has been given the task of growing close to Evelina’s father, a clockmaker who also working as an inventor. However he also grows closer to Evelina in the process. However when danger strikes will he be able to keep her safe?

    I love historical fiction and this was no different. Roseanna M . White, the author has done a masterful job with this, the third in the Shadows Over England series. ( Although this is the third book it can be read as a standalone novel and still tell a complete story.) White sweeps you back to 1915 London, giving vivid descriptions that will leave you feeling like you have visited Hammersmith and Poplar, both very different neighborhoods in London. I loved Barclay’s colorful family and Lina’s spunky persistence. I will be going back to read the first two books in the series and hope that White decides to write a fourth!

    Roseanna White always produces heroes and heroines with distinct backgrounds and personality types so that in every book, they stand out from previous characters in her other stories. This is a real talent since there can be a cookie cutter quality for most historical Christian romance/mystery characters that makes the plots feel sadly predictable. I never have to worry about this with a book written by Roseanna White and true to form, An Hour Unspent features Barclay a reformed thief turned spy who has forged together a family of orphans. He encounters Evelina Manning who has built protective walls around herself to minimize emotions and opportunity for hurt and to maximize her own freedom and independence. She discovers she has lost herself in the process. A romance eventually develops, drama ensues, a beloved family member is kidnapped and Barclay and company must spring into action. This book is set in WWI England and will be interesting to fans of the early seasons of Downton Abbey, Christian historical fiction, English historical fiction, WWI era romance/mystery/intrigue. Major themes include what defines a family, loyality, and emotional vulnerability. This book could be read as a stand alone but many of the supporting characters have been introduced in the previous books of the series and so it is best read in order. It is always gratifying to read and complete series and to be rewarded with continued glimpses of beloved characters from previous books. This was a satisfying end to a fun series.

    An Hour Unspent by Roseanna M. White is the third book in the Shadows Over England series, and it is a wonderful tale that kept me up until the wee hours of the night.

    I loved Barclay and his big heart. He cared for anyone who needed help and was a "big brother" to many left orphaned or abandoned. His growth from a thief to a man of God trying to do the right thing was moving to read.

    Evelina was an interesting character who seemed ahead of her time. Her belief that she was nothing more than an automaton was something to behold when she grew into a "real-live girl." The romance between Barclay and Evelina was something that had to grow and change as well, as each character dealt with their own insecurities.

    A fine conclusion to a wonderful series. I highly recommend it!
