Forgiveness Road: A Powerful Novel of Compelling Historical Fiction Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 565 ratings

“A compelling, heart-wrenching story” of three generations of women and the dark secret that upends their lives—from the author of The Last Suppers (The Durango Herald).

On a hot, humid July morning, sixteen-year-old Cissy Pickering calmly and deliberately shoots her father in the back.

To their Mississippi community, the death of well-regarded attorney Richard Pickering is a fascinating scandal. To Cissy’s distraught mother, Caroline, it’s an unforgivable crime. But in Cissy’s troubled mind, it was the only way she knew to save her younger sisters, the two people she loves most in the world.

Janelle Clayton, the family’s matriarch, has kept her distance from her daughter, Caroline—a fact she now regrets—yet she hopes to do right by her granddaughter, whom she believes implicitly. When Cissy is remanded to the Greater Mississippi State Hospital, new revelations drive her to retreat from reality. It will fall to Janelle to become Cissy’s advocate and rescuer. And over the course of an unlikely road trip, Janelle and Cissy will confront the truths they’ve hidden from the world and themselves—finding courage, resilience, and a bond tender and tough enough to transform them both.

“Mikulencak tackles the complex ramifications of abuse, from unwanted notoriety to complex questions of who is responsible, with grace and empathy . . .
Forgiveness Road is haunting and poignant.”—Booklist

Praise for The Last Suppers

"In this novel of compassion, readers will find a humanizing light in a normally dark place."
-Booklist

"
The Last Suppers held me riveted from the first page to the last, a gorgeous novel that finds beauty in the most unlikely of places. This story has the social conscience of The Help, the unflinching honesty of The Shawshank Redemption, and a wholly original heroine whose humanity will touch your heart as she cooks her way to redemption."
-Susan Wiggs, #1
New York Times bestselling author

"A haunting study of race relations, compassion, and mystery. A must read."
-Library Journal (Starred Review)

"A taut page-turner . . . had me in its grips to the shocking end of a well-crafted,
gripping story."
-Anna Jean Mayhew, author of
The Dry Grass of August

"A serious book, beautifully written . . . compelling and very very real."
-The New York Journal of Books

"Filled with heart and reverent solemnity, despair and hope, Mandy Mikulencak's writing is a sensitive, thoughtful narrative about finding freedom beyond the boundaries of what we believe of ourselves and of our past. With captivating characters, a unique premise, and set in sultry Louisiana, this story is as rich and enticing as the last suppers prepared, one you will want to linger over until the very last page."
-Donna Everhart, author of The Education of Dixie Dupree

"Unrestrained in its honesty, this is one novel that will keep you thinking long after the last page is read."
-Historical Novels Society"

I couldn't put this book down. It was so well -written and fast -paced and I loved everything about it. The characters were all so real, both the good ones and those that were not so good. The story is easy to follow and identify with. I hope more people read this book, especially young women and the mothers and others that raise them.

This book far exceeded my expectations and submerged me into a story that feels so topical today, with the rise of the #MeToo movement. As the acknowledgment indicates, the author wrote the first draft of this story years ago, but today, the timeliness of this release is uncanny, providing a personal, heart-wrenching rendering of the type of psychological damage incurred by girls and young women who are the victims of sexual abuse. Our hero, Cissy, seems a precocious oddball, who in reality has turned inward to deal with the horrific years-long abuse by her father. She's a woman-child who deals with her own crisis by turning inward to make sense of a protective God amidst her horrific experience, and to voracious reading to develop her own narrative and sense of right and wrong. The character of her grandmother, Janelle, is a beautifully drawn, and even though we love her from the get-go, it just keeps getting better and better as we learn more about her fiery devotion and what led her to instinctively protect her granddaughter. The book is a compassionate rendering of the tragedy, survival and triumph of women who bond over these common experiences and come out on top, refusing to be defined by those who rob them of their physical innocence.

Well written story about emotional
And physical abuse. This novel touched so many areas of my personal life. Both my“that sometimes, the roads we don’t know we’re walking are the ones that lead us to exactly where we’re meant to be.” relationships with my mother and grandmother's relationship with me and my siblings were very similar. Also my experiences with mental institutions, through my sister brought home many sad powerful memories. The author does a great job of writing about these traumas.

I gave it a 3 star because, the story was interesting, easy to read, and based on something that could really happen. Cissy had guts. She had wisdom, and she loved her family. Unfortunately some of her family didn't love her. I was hooked from the beginning. My heart went out to Cissy and her Grandmother, who really did love her ,and was her salvation. I enjoyed the book, until the very end. The ending was not the ending, and it left you hang. Finish the story. What happened between mother and daughter and where was the forgiveness? You really could of fleshed out the end of the story. I read to the end and had all these questions and feelings left unanswered. Running away with Grandma's money, just didn't cut it for me. Because of the ending, I would not recommend this book.

I liked this book but not the ending. It definitely
needs a sequel. Otherwise it was very believable and a different type of story. Well written.

Good story. Written well, very believable but definitely needs a sequel.

The author’s talent leads her readers through hell and back, as experienced by her characters. Amazing story of the strength of family. And the super human power of forgiveness.

Cissy has been surviving all to common abuse right in front of the very people who should have been able to protect her. Her solution seems right to her but turns her and her family inside out. Follow the love of a grandmother that refuses to give up on her granddaughter and takes them all beyond anyone's endurance.

A powerful story of 3 generations of women. I would have never picked up this book due to the subject matter if it wasn't for my book club picking it. I felt uncomfortable about the subject matter many times, but I loved the characters. I loved that the author wasn't graphic, but my mind went right there which is why I was uncomfortable.

This book was very well written with strong character development, something I really appreciate. I would have given this book a 5, but I only gave it a 4 due to the subject matter. Great book!

We had a great book club discussion too!

.... but why did it have to end? There is so much more to write about Cissy. I hope there will be a second book. I couldn't put this one down. The characters are strong, flawed and completely believable. The author tackles some very difficult subjects but managed to do it with such integrity, honesty and intelligence I really appreciated that. Read this book. You won't regret it.
