Life in the Chesapeake Bay: An Illustrated Guide to the Fishes, Invertebrates, Plants, Birds, and Other Inhabitants of the Bays and Inlets from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

“The best-written and best-illustrated guide ever about a North American tidal estuary. It is the model for all future coastal nature guides.” —Whole Earth Review

Life in the Chesapeake Bay is the most important book ever published on America’s largest estuary. Since publication of the first edition in 1984, tens of thousands of naturalists, boaters, fishermen, and conservationists have relied on the book’s descriptions of the Bay’s plants, animals, and diverse habitats. Superbly illustrated and clearly written, this acclaimed guide describes hundreds of plants and animals and their habitats, from diamondback terrapins to blue crabs to hornshell snails.

Now in its third edition, the book has been updated with a new gallery of thirty-nine color photographs and dozens of new species descriptions and illustrations. The new edition retains the charm of an engaging classic while adding a decade of new research.

This classic guide to the plants and animals of the Chesapeake Bay will appeal to a variety of readers—year-round residents and summer vacationers, professional biologists and amateur scientists, conservationists and sportsmen.

This book is an absolute must have for any enthusiast of the Chesapeake Bay, all who live on or near it, and anyone who is remotely interested in the wealth that this body of water and landscape hold. After purchasing the companion book "Life Along the Inner Coast," I found out that this book was very similar and covered all of the costal life of the Chesapeake Bay and was a companion to the other one, since "Life Along the Inner Coast" covers all life along coast from Virginia down to Florida. This guide covers The Chesapeake flora and fauna, both macroscopic and near microscopic. This book is a wealth of information and excellent illustrations for all of the different marine and non marine life that is described. If you are interested in the life of this fabulous Bay, then I highly recommend this book as an addition for your library. It has made an excellent addition to mine.

Most comprehensive and extremely valuable resource. As a aunt, uncle, parent, grandparent, etc., you can appear very smart when fielding questions about the sea life around you. We also use the book to aid us when officiating fishing tournaments.

This book was recommended, but not required by my instructor for Invertebrate Zoology. The problem with this book is that it has only illustrations, and not actual pictures of the specimens. Also, it gives only the species name, and no other taxonomic information which is needed for the course. I had to go else where to obtain that info.

I borrowed the 2nd edition for someone, but it's not as complete as the 3rd edition. I am doing research and the book is going to be very useful for species identification and knowing how to conduct a literature search for species. Very useful introduction to the bay.

Very informative, but can tend to drag on in parts (then again, what textbook doesn't?!). The photos are great and really helped me to understand the information better as I am a visual learner.
