This book is one I was looking forward to reading, its fast paced or at least I felt that way, and it is definitely very well researched. I'm giving it 4 stars because I dont feel like I'm well versed enough in history or time travel theory to understand what's going on in the story. I did like the characters of Alice, Jane, and Prudence even if we could have gotten more depth on them, its possible that will happen in the second book. I was lost about what was going on with who or where or how it all tied together. This isn't a genre I usually read ( its a book club choice) so I don't know if the way this story is laid out is normal. The author clearly has talent but for I just got lost in time ( lol sorry bad joke) so I won't be reading this series.

This lady just keeps writing books I have always wanted to read. It is quite the feat to juggle time travel with consequences from opposing ideologies that are neither simple nor clear-cut, throwing various characters into the mix, and making it exciting while still clear enough to follow. Kate Heartfield has a style that does not shy away from challenging the readers, both in eloquence and in logic, and I find that challenge refreshing and satisfying. She also does not stick to everyone's "favorite" points of history, which gives freshness to the whole time adventure, and yes, brings in the future too, to make the wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey even more unique. I had great fun with this book, and even though it was essentially setting up for the second volume, by the end I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen. All characters are fleshed out and interesting (which is, again, a feat from such a short novel), and I can't wait to read more about them, and what happens next.
Or before?...

I liked this well enough. It was fun and I enjoyed it. The interaction of three female characters some of whom were queer was enjoyable. I feel like much was crammed in and assumed for the speed of the narrative to continue. The time travel aspect was good. I appreciate that it is a first book in a series, it needs its next part very much.

I really enjoyed this, it was recommended online and I took a chance - its expensive for a novella and felt a bit short as a lot happens in it.

My biggest issue is that it was essentially a setup for the next books (which I hope is a book and not another novella) so while a lot happens, very little is resolved. Lots of questions are uncovered but little in the way of answers, which leaves you with a very unsatisfying read.

The time travel was handled well, with gadgets and technology so the science was believable. History seems to have diverged a lot so that was a bit uncertain as well.

I would recommend this provided you realise you will HAVE to buy the next book to actually find out what happens in the story.

Alice Payne Arrives is a perfect time travel novella, matching courageous protagonists with a history-defining mission to fix the problems humanity has created in the future. Heartfield expertly balances the wonders of time travel with the dangers of re-writing the past, giving us a high-stakes operation where every action can make a big difference. It’s a story you won’t want to put down, especially when you discover there’s a sequel on the horizon.

an interesting read that jumps in time to tell the story from different characters points of view. A lot is packed in. The characters are interesting. the ending leaves you hanging. I hear there is a sequel out now. I would love for an author to strive to tell a well rounded story within one book even if a sequel is planned so that each book can stand alone. Some of the sci-fi elements are hard to believe if we understand Einstein's theory of relativity.

I really liked the main characters. The time travel was fascinating. I look forward to the further adventures of the three women.

Time travel can be tricky. But Kate Heartfield’s Alice Payne Arrives handles the topic deftly. This novella is a clever tale of time travel across multiple timelines with a firm grasp of the consequences of mucking about with history.

The titular character, Alice Payne, lives in England in 1788, making a living as a highwayman with the assistance of her paramour, Jane, who is a talented inventor. Things go awry when a portal to another time opens, whisking away one of Alice’s problems. But it turns out that it’s actually worse for Alice that the problem is gone. Meanwhile, Prudence Zuniga is trying to keep history from going awry by changing the course of events in 1889. When that fails (seventy plus times), she’s finally brought back to the twenty-second century, told to give up on that change, and focus on another instead. And that’s where Alice and Prudence’s timelines intersect, leading to both women trying to determine the best way to achieve their personal goals, protect the people they care about, and save the world in the process.

This novella is a quick read with fantastic characters that is sure to leave you wanting more. So if you like your speculative fiction with a little bit of steampunk and a little bit of science fiction, all tied up with a time travel bow, you’ll want to check out Alice Payne Arrives!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Opening Shot In A Time Travel Adventure
Reviewed in Canada on November 26, 2018
Alice Payne Arrives takes two wildly different voices and moves along at a rapid pace. The titular Alice Payne fights with the odds stacked against her, being gay, of mixed race and heavily in debt in 18th century England, while Prudence Zuniga wages a running battle through time to avoid a gigantic historical mess.

This novella clearly sets the stage for a much larger story, of which the continuation is coming, and there are a lot of moving parts. But if you're looking for a time travel story takes plucky period characters and mashes them with burnt out chronal anarchists, this is probably the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisting, turning, head-spinning fun from start to finish
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 27, 2018
Alice Payne Arrives is one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time. It should be noted at the outset that it's the first of a series, so it's not a stand-alone story. But the sequel is already available to pre-order, so you won't have to wait long to find out what happens next! And in the meantime, you get to enjoy this delightful rollercoaster ride.

Alice Payne is an 18th century noble's daughter. She also has an alter ego: The Holy Ghost, a highwayman who only targets scumbags. When the far future comes calling, she gets pulled into a heist that could forever change humanity's outcome.

There's just so much to love here, from the historical setting to the futuristic one. The science and achievements of the past and future collide marvellously. There's intrigue, mind-boggling war, romance, and kickass female protagonists. And lots and lots of time travel.

There's always a danger with time travel stories that the plot will become far too complicated and leaden with logic-twisting paradoxes. But somehow, Kate Heartfield manages to concoct a story that makes complete sense and doesn't have you scratching your head in confusion. Yes, the science and time travel technology is extremely hand-wavy, but its logic is consistent and it's presented in an entirely believable way, and that was enough for me. The plot is a fine juggling act, but it all hangs together. I'm sure it presented massive challenges at the writing stage, but the final result is a neat slotting together of times, places, and protagonists. A perfect clockwork mechanism of story.

I enjoyed this novella so much. If you like a little historical drama with your science fiction, I can't recommend it highly enough.

She’s pretty unusual, this Alice. That other Alice we all know explores an up and down world; this Alice, a then and now and maybe or possible world. Well crafted.

Certainly a quick read, and one with interesting characters. I didn't feel like it was a waste of time. I will go on to read the sequel.
