- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2014I first read this book from the library. Mine that I bought is in far better condition than the one I checked out. Outstanding read and if one wants to get the lowdown on this history of the Irish/Celts/Scots this is by far one of the more concise and understandable books on the history. Keep in mind, I am not prone to just handing out 5 stars, this is in outstanding condition, its an outstanding book and the price was reasonable!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2022Seumas McManus was a friend of my grandmother, and my mother had many of his books. This is one of my favorites. McManus tells a fascinating story, often a blend of legend and history, of one of the most significant ethnic groups in the world. He billed himself as "the last of the Irish seanachies (storytellers)" and he excels at it.
The volume as ordered from Amazon was in perfect condition and arrived very quickly.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2017Great read! priced right, lots of info! Especially if you are traveling to Ireland, which we did, however, I should have bought it prior to going, it would have been really a lot of help with all interesting places that were at hand. And it is written by a really great author,, that writes with warmth, and love for his people, and their heritage. Not just an ordinary commentary, it is written with heart felt feeling, and love! tks, Amazon
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2017This is an excellent resource, written encyclopedic style, for a scholarly attempt at a history of the people known as Irish. Like many other first attempts, the best parts about it are the bibliography, and the candor with which the author(s) assess the various sources.
The best news is that this edition appears to have been completely recomposited, so the Kindle edition seems to have been generated from digital text, rather than from error-prone optical character recognition (OCR). I have a copy of a hard-cover edition, and although some of the decorative illustrations are amusing, I'm really glad that the current editors chose to get the text accurate rather than try to reproduce the appearance of an earlier edition.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2022My heritage is Italian, my daughter is marrying a great guy who has Irish background. I had to learn a bit about the history and evolution of the Irish people - this book is (apparently) authoritative, but very detailed and difficult to read. I'll keep at it to gain a better understanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016The Story of the Irish Race is fascinating to me, as it gives so much more detailed Irish history that I've never heard before! NOT light reading, but good for small sessions. One objection - ALL surnames mentioned in the book are NOT listed in the index. Especially interesting was where the peoples who BECAME "more Irish than the Irish" came from. Horrible to find out how the English treated the Irish - not something I knew well - and fun to read about the various women who were leaders at various stages.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2013I am always interested in books written in the early twentieth century or earlier for doing family history research. These books tend to be written from a non revisionist perspective and offer the best opportunity to learn points of view and perspectives from individuals who have actually lived during the events or had the opporunity to interview participants from those events.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2018Most comprehensive history of the Irish race. Much information was unknown to me and probably many others who have nver delved into Irish history.
Unfortunately, for someone without knowledge of Gaelic. it was almost impossible to pronounce the names and places referred to in the book. The extent of the impact of Irish scholars a nd learned clerics in ancient days was a revelation. It will open your eyes to the great history this nation has.

5.0 out of 5 stars right then
You aren’t finished seamy! Took me ages reading around this book and following the research. Well done. Although much of from the end of your book till today is covered in copious books, it would have been good to hear what you have to offer on the story of the Irish race to date. The part of the story of the Irish race post selling out the people of the north isn’t there. Good read all the same. Thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting reading!
Love reading the history of Ireland where my some of my ancestors came from. Found the book a 'wee' bit heavy going in places but persevered and enjoyed it very much! It's a book that I had been looking for years ago. I had glanced at a friend's copy years ago and therefore was very pleased to find a copy available on Amazon. Thank you so much. Book delivered on time and in very good condition. Overall, very pleased with the purchase and recommend this seller to everyone.
