Lead with Literacy: A PIRATE Leader's Guide to Developing a Culture of Readers (A Lead Like a PIRATE Guide) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 97 ratings

Readers are leaders. Leaders are readers. Literacy impacts every aspect of life—from schoolwork and test scores to the way we relate to others and to the career paths we and our students pursue. But learning to read—and teaching students to read—isn’t always easy, which is why the most important tenet of developing a culture of reading in your school is to foster a love of reading.
In Lead with Literacy, educator and elementary school principal Mandy Ellis offers practical, immediately actionable, fun ideas and strategies that will deeply embed books, reading, and literacy into your school culture. You’ll learn . . .
Who should decide which books students should be reading
What it takes to create a culture of reading
Where books can and should be found in your school
Why books need to come with a “no strings attached” policy
How to lead the way by sharing what you are reading now
Rather than focusing exclusively on Lexile scores and reading levels, Ellis encourages leaders to integrate literacy everywhere. The ultimate goal is to make reading a joy for every member of the school community—starting with the lead reader.

I ordered this book the day it released last week...got it in today...read it all in one day!! This is a great professional text about creating a culture of readers with very easy but effective ideas to implement that will make a huge difference for students, staff, parents, and school culture. I highly recommend this book for administrators, teachers/librarians, and others that work in schools! Let me start by saying this book is real. It is not full of a bunch of extremely time consuming ideas or ones that will suck even more out of your already slim bank account. The ideas mentioned can pretty much be done for free or with donations (and people will donate books or to causes such as literacy). It is not full of ideas that sound great but are not easily implementable or feasible. It is not full of a bunch of ideas that someone put down on paper for the sake of publishing a book. Mandy Ellis has implemented what she has written about at the school at which she is an administrator, and attests to their success. They are tried and true ideas that will help you create a culture of readers at your school. Some of them you may already be doing, but I promise there are some you are not. They are ideas that she believes in. They are ideas that other educators believe in. They are ideas that I believe in. And, they are ideas that students believe in. They are ideas that need to become realities and the way of life in schools everywhere. Reading is so very important. It is my personal belief that there is a reader inside everyone. Some just haven't had the right help to find that our yet. I believe that the content presented in this book will help with that. I know, I know. Most of us hear "professional text" and we cringe. I promise that you will LOVE this book. I am very happy that I have added this to my collection of professional texts. In fact, I am so happy that I ordered a couple of copies this evening and had them shipped to some of the ones I had mentioned having earlier conversations with about this very subject. I also know that this is not the only time I will read this book, and it will be the last time it looks "new". I am fixing to make all kinds of notes and marks on these pages!

While looking to develop a culture of readers (without just speaking those words, as Mandy writes), I looked to this book for inspiration and guidance. As an elementary principal in a high-needs district, I recognize the importance and urgency of developing an appreciation for the power of books to inform, entertain, soothe, and create empathy and deepen learning about the human experience. This book was exactly what I needed to bring our school’s mission and vision to fruition. I look forward to leading with literacy after reading about Mandy’s journey to do the same!

Mandy has written an engaging and enyoyable book about how to build a culture of reading. Reading is something kids should want to do not just have to do! With that idea in mind, she provides many ideas of how to instill a love of reading in all areas of a school. I have seen administrators in my district use her ideas with success. I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for fun ideas to create a culture of reading.
