The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons: A Semi-serious A-to-Z Archive Kindle Edition
The is the most ingenious collection of New Yorker cartoons published in book form, The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons is a prodigious, slip-cased, two-volume, 1,600-page A-to-Z curation of cartoons from the magazine from 1924 to the present. Mankoff -- for two decades the cartoon editor of the New Yorker -- organizes nearly 3,000 cartoons into more than 250 categories of recurring New Yorker themes and visual tropes, including cartoons on banana peels, meeting St. Peter, being stranded on a desert island, snowmen, lion tamers, Adam and Eve, the Grim Reaper, and dogs, of course. The result is hilarious and Mankoff's commentary throughout adds both depth and whimsy. The collection also includes a foreword by New Yorker editor David Remnick. This is stunning gift for the millions of New Yorker readersand anyone looking for some humor in the evolution of social commentary.

Review
"Bob Mankoff's brilliant reorganization of nearly 100 years of New Yorker cartoons is a can't-miss. Using the thematic categorization approach that made his Cartoon Bank such a treat, this "encyclopedia" divides the entries into the weirdly recurring tropes like "Beached Whales," "Humpty Dumpty," "Nudism," "Office Life," and of course, meeting "Saint Peter."
Mankoff adds come color commentary to tease out common themes throughout. The cartoons themselves are lovingly reprinted in gloriously oversized formats you can fall into. Of course, at 15 pounds this two-volume behemoth is a grand impractical production that needs a table of its own."―Folio

Fantastic, large in size (2 huge tomes), excellent paper (joy to flip pages) … and The New Yorker cartoons, 3000 of them all personally selected by Mr. Mankoff! Trifecta!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2018So much to like about this. First of all, I find it very soothing to look at cartoons or comics when I'm trying to fall asleep, so I downloaded the Kindle version of this book. Some of the drawings are so good I enjoy looking at the backgrounds, thinking about how styles have changed (women still wore hats in 1967?), and seeing that life hasn't changed all that much in years, though the details evolve.
The book isn't formatted to display cleanly on my iPhone, but that's not a huge problem. I'd prefer one cartoon per page because when they try to stuff two on a page the caption for the second often gets pushed onto the next page. Not the end of the world, but kind of sloppy.
The narrative between sections is often funny and always informative. Makes me notice things I'd never see on my own.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2019I bought this as a gift for my husband who is a great fan of The New Yorker and its cartoons in particular. The books are beautifully bound and boxed. The paper is of high quality. The cartoons are classified by category, which makes it particularly fun if you want a laugh and any given topic. He is enjoying it thoroughly. Got it for $50 which was a great price!

Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024Muy lindo y muy bueno el servicio. Agradezco a Amazon toda la ayuda respecto a esta enciclopedia que compré. Gracias
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2025…But there is a little Redundancy withs some Whole Cartoons, & some ideas, which may have been included for diversity ( ? )
The Other Big annoyance is that The pages should have been formatted & scanned for each book page, to avoid The image being separated from The caption too often ( ! ) I think it may have been possible to fix this sort of thing with internal captioning, such as ‘newpage’ or ‘nobreak’, but treating each page like a magazine page would probably be easier ( ? )

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2023The compilation of The New Yorker cartoons is wonderful and all subjects and themes are included. The seller was also great as I never received the original order although USPS confirmed delivery. I contacted the seller and they immediately reshipped a new order. Excellent service and I recommend both the book and seller. Thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2019The New Yorker may sometimes be mistaken or just plain wrong in their political views, but the cartoons never fail to be amusing. Sometimes cat centric or dog centric or just wallowing in neurosis, they very often exactly hit the humorous side of life. These cartoons are arranged by subject not by date, so you can appreciate how humor has changed about a particular topic over the years.

A mi pareja le ha encantado. Encuadernación súper sólida. El lomo del libro tenía una pequeña marca, pero ha de ser por el viaje.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful coffee table book
I’ve always loved the New Yorker cartoons and these books are no exception. Of course, since they include a lot of references to pop culture/ current events and they are a collection of comics from over a large time period so I didn’t get all of them. Comics are organized alphabetically by topic. Overall we are really enjoying these!! Also the books are gorgeous, and look lovely!
