Junkers Ju 88: The Twilight Years: Biscay to the Fall of Germany (Air War Archive) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

Designed as a fast bomber that could outrun the fighters of the era, the twin-engine Junkers Ju 88 became one of the most versatile aircraft of the Second World War. Such was the success of the design that its production lines operated constantly from 1936 to 1945, with more than 16,000 examples being built in dozens of variants more than any other twin-engine German aircraft of the period. From an early stage it was intended that it would be used as a conventional light bomber and as a dive-bomber. As such, it served in the invasion of Poland, the Norway campaign, the Blitzkrieg and the invasion of France and the Battle of Britain. This latest volume in Frontlines Air War Archive examines the Ju 88s use in the latter years of the Second World War. The types use as a torpedo bomber or reconnaissance aircraft, as well as its deployment in Russia, over the Bay of Biscay and in the Mediterranean theater are all explored. Even its use in the Mistel flying-bomb is covered. In this selection of unrivaled images collected over many years, the operations of this famous aircraft in its twilight years are portrayed and brought to life.

Non stop photo album of the Ju-88 in all theaters in the last three years of the war. What’s nice is the story behind the images and some historical info on the plane and/or crews fates. Also liked the information on the torpedo variants.
Dinged it a star because it lacked any interior photos of any of the versions covered. But overall great resource for those wanting to know more about the Ju-88 in a book that reflects a healthy amount of research and combing archives.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book

Excellent view of the Ju 88 in the second half of the war. The Ju 88 was perhaps Germany’s most successful aircraft, in production from start to finish. It served as a dive bomber, bomber, ground attack aircraft, reconnaissance plane, day and night fighter and piggy back plane.

Would have liked something on the attack by 100 Ju88s on Bari on 2/12/43. Known as Little Pearl Harbour, it was probably the most successful German raid of the war, sinking the great majority of the ships in harbour.

Though not mentioned in the title , the book does not cover the Ju88 as night fighter- perhaps it’s most successful role. Unanswerable for British bombers when equipped with upward firing canon. Maybe a third volume.

Des photos inédites surtout le JU 88 A17 (Torpilleur). Beaucoup de photos . De bonnes idées pour réaliser une maquette avec un camouflage original.
