As an English teacher, words are my profession and my passion, so it’s easy to identify writers whose stories flow effortlessly and whose word choice fit the characters and their situations, and it’s beyond clear that R.S. Grey knows her way around words and her romantic comedies are always on point!

NOT SO NICE GUY includes so many of the qualities that I adore about romance books:

It uses humorous diction - I’m a total goner for witty banter and snarky interactions. There’s just something about a writer being able to create one-liners and lengthy exchanges that are laugh out loud funny that makes me giddy; I can’t tell you how many sentences I highlighted in Sam and Ian’s story due to the entertaining way they explore a topic.

Sam is an extremely relatable character due to her quirky personality and, at times, her obliviousness. I had a total girl crush on her because she owned her dorkiness and reveled in her love for telling stories. I identified with Sam on so many levels that I almost feel like she’s my spirit animal;)

Readers get both main characters’ point of view which allows them to understand Sam and Ian’s perspective and what they’re internally thinking even if their outward actions imply something else. If Sam said half the things she says in her heat out loud, her colleagues would be completely caught off-guard, but they would also not stop laughing because she really is hilarious.

I love friends-to-lovers’ storylines - there’s just something about characters having an established relationship and then pursuing something more - even if they need a push or two along the way, and the fact that it takes a few bouts of jealousy to get Sam and Ian to see what’s been in front of them for the past three years proves that the attraction had always been there even if neither of them realized it until they were forced to admit their true feelings for one another.

I never stopped smiling as I read Sam and Ian’s story; there are so many humorous interactions that showcase Grey’s comedic prowess and provide readers with a lot of feel good moments.

NOT SO NICE GUY is a great summer read, and it’s one readers will adore because it has a great mix of fun, steam, and hilarity.

I loved this book so much!! Honestly for me it was just too perfect and mirrored my own life or at least ny fantasies too closely!!! I also have a best friend im madly in love with but the book divulges into my fantasy because in real life ill never be able to tell him. And the book even teases me more with the characters name! Not fair! Anyway so good- despite the miscommunication trope that i usually hate and the slight distance they put between themselves suddenly careening into moves that seem way too fast

I'm not usually a CR reader. In recent months, however, out of curiosity mainly, I've been trying out popular, relatively inexpensive CRs with at least a 4.5-star average rating. Some fill me with indignation, when I find the H to be a sleazy jerk and the h to be a no-self-respect pushover for an H with a handsome face, great bod and (usually) lots of money.

Once in a while I am pleasantly surprised. Once in a while the read is not a tasteless sexathon. That's the case for this book. There's mutual respect, friendship, love, and, yes, sexual attraction between this H and h. The writing is good, the dialogue is snappy and fun, the characters are appealing, and the sex scenes are not gratuitous. They fit right in to the romance's progression. This is a sweet even if somewhat shallow read. Good for escape from reality.

And not only that: There are no billionaires to be found here. The H and h are high school teachers, imagine that. The high school setting is fairly realistic albeit in a rom-com kind of way, although the fact that our H and h are super attractive, hot-bodied teachers may not be all that true to life. I've been a teacher my whole life and have rarely encountered a Brad Pitt-type fellow teacher. But then I don't consider the world's billionaires to be all that sexy either. (Bill Gates anyone?)

The H and h of the story started working at this high school at the same time three years ago and have become very close friends, doing everything together. They each feel a sexual attraction to the other, but, unsure about the other's real feelings, don't want to rock the Friend Boat. They are so close, however, that all their fellow teachers and staff at the school are sure they are dating.

Until the only-friends truth comes out accidentally one day and H and h find themselves very actively pursued by many of their co-workers. And this, of course, leads to...

I am a little too old for this kind of story but I appreciated its slant towards respect, love, and romance and the slow burn leading to actual bedding, even though the sexual aspect of the H/h relationship developed too fast once they realized their true feelings for each other. It's the kind of CR relationship I probably wouldn't mind a young woman reading, once she knows about the birds and the bees and can handle somewhat steamy sex in reads. (I'd rather she read JANE EYRE or PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, of course.) 3.5 stars rounded to 4 because I was entertained and not irritated.

Ok honestly, at this point, R.S. Grey could write an appliance manual and I’d probably fall in love on the first page and give it five stars. I’ve never known an author who can constantly knock it out of the park with every single book they write, but man am I ever blessed to have found one.

Sam was one of the most relatable characters I’ve read. She was at times shy and insecure and the queen of overthinking. I feel like her freak outs were so on brand to the character that R.S. Grey had developped.

Ian is the perfect man. It’s as simple is that. There never has been or ever will be a man as perfect as Ian Fletcher. He was so sweet and so hot and so sure. He was certain about Sam and who doesn’t want a literal perfect man who is so sure of the future he wants with you? Oh, no one raised their hands? Exactly.

The students, especially Nicholas, had me literally laughing out loud. He was so adorable. The staff members added the perfect amount of humour and one-liners to an already fantastic book, and Ian’s parents were perfect. I loved how much they loved Sam.

Every time I start a book by R.S. Grey I think that it’s funniest thing I’ve ever read and nothing can top it. Then I get to a new one, and somehow she does. Every single time her books get funnier and I’d like to take this moment to thank her in advance for the abs I’m going to get solely by laughing at her perfect one-liners. Also she makes top notch references. As someone who grew up watching M*A*S*H, I really appreciated Ian calling Sam ‘Hot Lips.’

The friends-to-lovers plot was amazing. Without spoiling too much, I’m just going to say I adored the way it progressed. It was quick, but at the same time it felt so natural and very in character to Sam and Ian. There was never anything that was out of place or strange in terms of plot and pacing.

Basically, if you are in need of the perfect friends-to-lovers book, then look no further. Not So Nice Guy is exactly what you’re looking for. It was so great it made want to fake sick so I could go home after my lunch break and keep reading (I didn’t of course, but it was so tempting). This is another R.S. Grey book that you desperately need in your life, and I promise, it’s one of her best!
