Always a big fan of the show and recently have embarked on a streak of watching it all over again. I was looking for a reference book on the X-Files series and movies and found this one, which is the perfect companion. No fat, all meat. If you were/are a fan, this is the one.

This book is the perfect excuse to re-watch The X-Files. The writers have different styles and points of view, but each offers consistently insightful takes on all the episodes of show (and, it appears, all there are likely going to be.) I've been enjoying watching the episodes, considering my impression, and seeing how it matches (or contrasts) with the reviews here. While at times I'm irritated at something I feel was missed, and an unfortunate sense of doom invades the reviews of early mythology episodes (when I would prefer to forget how they lose their way!), this is clearly a book written by two guys who truly appreciate and enjoy the show. I recommend it for any X-Files fan, especially those who stuck it out through the end.

For those looking for episode guides to the series, there are more appropriate books. The emphasis here is critical analysis by the authors, opinions often tinged by personal prejudices and ideology. How many "hits" vs "misses" made by the authors will depend the readers' own prejudices and ideology, though tempered, of course, by the level of infatuation or involvement with the show and its stars. It's not a book for anyone looking for an introduction to the show, its plots or stars. Detailed knowledge and an intimate familiarity with the series is required to derive any real benefit from the book. The greatest value of the book lies in being exposed to informed opinions other than your own, considering aspects, speculations and conclusions that might not have occurred to you.

"Monsters of the Week" by Zack Handlen and Emily Todd VanDerWerff is basically your favorite "X-Files"-obsessed friends geeking out with you over coffee—except they wrote it all down. This book lovingly (and hilariously) revisits every spooky episode, conspiracy twist, and questionable Mulder fashion choice across all seasons and both movies. Handlen and VanDerWerff's banter is witty, insightful, and packed with behind-the-scenes nuggets that even the biggest X-Philes might've missed. It's like finally getting answers to your wildest theories—or at least discovering you weren't alone in your confusion about certain plot points (looking at you, black oil).

What makes this companion shine is the deep dive into Mulder and Scully’s dynamic—arguably the greatest "will-they-won’t-they" duo in TV history (sorry, Ross and Rachel). From analyzing iconic monsters (hello, Flukeman!) to dissecting Chris Carter’s knack for leaving us both dazzled and utterly baffled, the authors bring humor and heart to every critique. And bonus: there's input from legends like Vince Gilligan and Darin Morgan, making the book feel less like a textbook and more like the most delightful "X-Files" panel you've ever attended.

At 4.5 stars, "Monsters of the Week" isn’t just essential reading for die-hard fans—it’s also an approachable (and wildly entertaining) intro for anyone who's ever wondered why everyone was obsessed with aliens and trench coats in the '90s. It's fun, nostalgic, and confirms once and for all that even decades later, the truth is still out there... and yes, we're all still hopelessly obsessed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent X Files companion!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 20, 2025
An invaluable guide and companion to the X FILES tv phenomenon. I thoroughly enjoy reading it as both an accompaniment to my rewatch of the show, and dipping into it either randomly or researching the authors' thoughts on particular characters, episodes, plot developments. If you only buy one book about The X Files, make it this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific guide to the show
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2019
I am at a loss to understand the negative reviews this book is getting, there is absolutely nothing spiteful about it? I am as big a fan of The X-Files as anyone, but all fans understand that episode quality was always hit and miss, so that one week you might be watching a brilliant episode like Bad Blood or Home, the next you might be watching one of the widely acknowledged stinkers like Space or 3, episodes that fans themselves have always joked about. (Heck even the show made a meta joke in season 11 about what a terrible episode everyone thinks the cat one from season 3 was). All the book does is fairly appraise each episode with the understanding that some are better than others, and in fact the authors argue that season 6 (the first season set in LA with a lot of comedy episodes) and season 8 (first season without Mulder) are far stronger than fans allow, and they go to bat for the revival series as well and seem to like it very much, in fact it gets a much more positive response in this book than I have ever seen online. Yes they talk about the mythology eventually not making any sense, but that’s nothing that nearly all viewers haven’t argued themselves?

They also interview nearly all of the writers, including Chris Carter, as well as actors like the ones for Skinner and Doggett, all of which have a lot of additional insight to offer. And each season and movie are accompanied by gorgeous black and white drawings as well. So again I’ve no idea why this book is being dismissed as hating on the show, it’s no harsher on season 9, or on some of the really terrible episodes like Fight Club, than most of the fans themselves have been. If you want a book that is completely uncritical and gushes over every episode, then this will not be the book for you, but that’s still a far cry from the writers hating the show, their love for it comes across loud and clear
