An Illusion of Thieves (Chimera Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 211 ratings

A ragtag crew with forbidden magic must pull off an elaborate heist and stop a civil war in An Illusion of Thieves, a fantasy adventure from Cate Glass.

In Cantagna, being a sorcerer is a death sentence.

Romy escapes her hardscrabble upbringing when she becomes courtesan to the Shadow Lord, a revolutionary noble who brings laws and comforts once reserved for the wealthy to all. When her brother, Neri, is caught thieving with the aid of magic, Romy's aristocratic influence is the only thing that can spare his life—and the price is her banishment.

Now back in Beggar’s Ring, she has just her wits and her own long-hidden sorcery to help her and Neri survive. But when a plot to overthrow the Shadow Lord and incite civil war is uncovered, only Romy knows how to stop it. To do so, she’ll have to rely on newfound allies—a swordmaster, a silversmith, and her own thieving brother. And they'll need the very thing that could condemn them all: magic.

After having been a fan of Carol Berg's for many years, I was thrilled to begin my escape into the world by her pseudonym Cate Glass with this, the first of the Chimera trilogy. In similar fashion to her previous works I've so enjoyed, she creates complex characters that can be difficult to like and enjoyable to watch squirm in a world she at once crafts and makes you believe in with deft precision and beautiful prose. I've always personally believed that magic is all around us, all the time, and my recent foray into the Chimera trilogy leaves me assured of this and eagerly anticipating the next two books in the series. The author masterfully creates excellent story that her readers can dive into and remain as long as they'd like, and return to as frequently as they care to enjoy. Another stunning work in true Carol Berg fashion.

An Illusion of Thieves struggles in the first few chapters with an inordinate amount of info dumping that really, really isn't necessary. There's a lot of unfamiliar place names, and explanations of history that honestly, really aren't necessary to the novel as a whole. If you took out the huge info dumps at the beginning of this book, it would flow so so much better. BUT DESPITE THAT, An Illusion of Thieves was an enjoyable fantasy novel with a heist twist into it.

Romy is a delightful main character, with a very unique magic power. She's got some sass to her that I really like. Her brother, Neri, on the other hand, I wanted to slap silly. He is the reason behind basically everything that happens in this book and he doesn't ever appear to be even remotely apologetic over it.

Readers of the Locke Lamora series should enjoy this one -- same Italian-esque setting with thievery and wit involved.

If you're having a hard time settling into the book, force yourself to get at least 10% of the way in, and then it should get a little better for you.

I stumbled upon this book and devoured it - fell asleep mid-page and couldn't do anything the next day until I finished it. The clever fun of a good heist book in an atmospheric Italian Renaissance-cum-dawning-Enlightenment setting, with enough intriguing hooks of deeper mysteries in plot and character that I didn't at all mind waiting for a series. But the real standout here is the surprisingly rich and mature characterization and character interactions - of the main character, but really across the board (although I could have used a book double or more the length to dig deeper into those interactions, though am looking forward to the next installment). Just an immensely satisfying read - and quite affecting if complex and understated romantic thread (for me reminiscent of Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana). My only disappointment was that I was so delighted to find a new must-read author, when reading others' reviews I realized that she's actually a long-time favorite, Carol Berg, writing under a new pseudonym. For me the book is most reminiscent of some of my very favorite Berg books, her Soul Mirror (great to see her writing another engaging and complicated female lead here) and Flesh and Spirit/Breath and Bone duology. If you liked this book and haven't checked those out; run, don't walk!

O!! Cate Glass (aka Carol Berg, one of my favorite authors!), I thank you for this special treat! Witty and endearing and engrossing and and and ...
I’m not keen on a written review that discloses intimacies of a story - that’s for the individual reader to discern.
However, I can say it will seem like a LONG wait until the 4th of February when I anticipate the release of the next Chimera book. Sigh.
Thank you for writing - and entertaining us with your high caliber of writing. Glorious!! Here’s to true magic ...

I thought this book would be a heist book, so I was so surprised when, 45 percent in, there was no heist and there was no team of miscreants assembled. The first impression of this book that I had was sadly one of frustration, and by the time the heist kicked in, I had already decided on my feelings on the story.

The majority of this book is about a character who I can only describe as a jerk (or as a certain type of hole.) She's cruel and judgemental and her narration is filled with very negative thoughts. I didn't find her sympathetic in the slightest. At least she was clever and smart - if she hadn't, this book would have gone nowhere. The protagonist has a jerk brother too, and I didn't like their interactions. I didn't like reading about their troubled relationship. It wasn't dramatic enough and it wasn't interesting enough.

Eventually, we meet some other, more interesting characters, and yes, eventually they plan a heist, albeit one that mostly involves misdirection and not much thieving at all. I was mistakenly hoping this book would be a less YA take on something like Six of Crows, but it wasn't, and I'd hardly compare it to that book (which, despite its flaws, had a much more colorful cast.) Even though the heist part of the book is interesting, I don't like the main character enough to stick with this story in future installments.

This is a hood fantasy book . There is NO romance so if Iu r looking for that go elsewhere. It’s a caper . It reads like Carol Berg ( her other pen name) but w less darkness. By book 3 it’s getting dark but it takes time to build. It’s a fun, fast read and I recommend it to any Catol Berg fans who miss her books .

The characters are so mysterious and yet they become your best friends! I love the spiderweb of plans. The whole story put me on the edge of my seat and made me fall off too!
Romy is such a fascinating character. She is beautiful and we'll trained yet also so intelligent and curious. She always sees the bigger picture. Her brother Neri has so much maturing to do. Placidio is the unexpected tough but caring yet he holds them back at a distance. There are many secrets in his history. Dumond and his wife are the older couple of true love and survival. They all need to come together and save the city, the country even. Maybe with a little magic it is possible!
I loved every minute of this book and can't wait for the next one!

I'd saved this book to read on holiday, squirreled it away like a box of chocolates. Having the time now to savour it, I have been lost to this world and cocooned in another. A most enjoyable read, and I have pre-ordered the next book in the series.

This book is well written with an intelligent Heroine and a good story line it kept me interested with all the politics and intrigues going on I have not finished it yet but already I am sad that she is not still with the man she was a courtesan for.

A good read though.
