After the Fall Kindle Edition
In late 1941, the Philippines is a haven for those intent on shedding their pasts and reinventing themselves. Lt. Riley Gilhouley—the Great Gilhouley—keeps the troops well stocked in contraband as he seeks the attention of Maj. Rosemary Dodd, a by-the-book officer who leads her nurses with expert care. Ex-priest John Macklin searches for absolution, but finds himself tangling with Glory Bee O’Halloran, a stripper hired to take off just enough clothing to throw the troops into a frenzy.
But when, mere hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attack the Philippines, the island haven explodes into the chaos of battle—and amid stolen moments and secret missions, all their lives will be forever changed. . . .
Set in a besieged country waiting in vain for help to arrive, this stunning novel from a “master storyteller” offers a blend of riveting history and heartfelt emotion (Affaire de Coeur).

About the Author
Her life is busy―sometimes crazy―but she is also dedicated to the pursuit of power shopping (when funds permit) and finding the perfect piece of chocolate. She is eternally grateful to her critique group for their technical advice and support and those "retreats with the girls" that help to keep her sane.
Lisa is the youngest of three children and began writing in her teens. Her first book was published while she was in her mid-20s and single. She credits her critique group with finding her husband―and consequently approving of their marriage.
Two years ago, she and her husband adopted their first child and she spends her days in pure bliss as a "mommy." Nevertheless, once naptime arrives, Lisa loves to while away the precious hours at the computer, writing about the love and laughter that every woman deserves in her life.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2015A wonderful story I couldn't put down. The characters are complex and this certainly isn't a run of the mill romance novel. It is much much more and I would recommend this book and Lisa Bingham's other works, to anyone who enjoys a novel with an intense plot and characters you wish you could meet in person. Excellent research and the language is beautiful. This books really touched my heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2020What a great portrayal and two love stories from a time of great fear. I was fortunate enough to have met a retired nurse who had been in the tunnels of Corregidor. She worked with two doctors I was working with at the time. And although they were Philippine doctors and older...they hadn’t forgotten the past.
Rosemary and Glory Bee are two characters I’ll not forget, soon. And, of course, John and Riley...oh, goodness, what strong men the author created! Along with their men...what strength, fortitude and compassion these men had for the women they loved and the men they protected.
A very human look at a war that Americans, Philippians, and Australians fought that for a time was overlooked. Thank you, Lisa Bingham for bringing this trying time to our attention.

I chose to read this book because the subject matter is entirely different from most other historical books. This novel takes place in December, 1941, in the Philippines, just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. I had forgotten that, immediately after that attack, the Japanese bombed the Philippines. This is that story.
The Philippines, at that time, was a place where people came to get away from their old life and start anew. They were able to ignore past mistakes and change themselves into the person they wish to be.
There are many characters involved in this novel, and we are introduced to them all. Yet, Lisa Bingham, very cleverly, manages to weave all of these characters together so that we can, actually, feel what life was like for them before and after the attack. In fact, After the Fall reminds me of the old disaster movies like “Earthquake” and “Airplane” except it is not as soap opera-like those stories were.
Very few historical books are written during WWII even though most of our parents or grandparents lived during that time. And when they do write about that time, they rarely, if ever, focus on the Philippines. Because of that, I found After the Fall an interesting novel that explores the fears and the bravery of the men and women who lived there at that time.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2016This book broke my heart but Lisa Bingham put it back together again. I've never read a book about WWII. I learned a lot and was sadly disturbed by what humans are capable of doing to one another. However, the basic human spirit of survival, love and kindness will always prevail.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2015After the Fall by Lisa Bingham is a historical novel that starts in early December of 1941 in the Philippines. Major Rosemary Dodd is in charge of the nurses at Fort Stotsenberg. She has been in the Pacific for twelve years and is celebrating another birthday. Her parents keep wanting to know when she will come home. At first they wanted her to marry and settle down, but now that she has hit 40 they want her to take care of them. Rosemary is attracted to Riley Patrick Gilhouley. He is assigned to the press corp and is known as the person who can get things. They two get together one evening and the next day their world will never be the same again.
Glory Bee O’Halloran is a strip tease artist. She has come to do a performance for the troops at Fort Stotsenberg before taking a hiatus (she is pregnant). John Macklin picks her up after the performance to stay at the sugar cane plantation he manages. Glory Bee is awakened by John the next day. Time to pack and move up into the owner’s hunting lodge in the mountains.
This book portrays the struggles of soldiers and civilians during the beginning of World War II in the Philippines. To me the best part of the book was the lovely ending. It was so sweet. I am glad that the author did not go into the horrors that the nurses suffered in Bataan and Corregidor. I give After the Fall 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it, but did not love it). I think this books main focus was romance. The instant attraction between two people. It is nicely written, great historical details, and lively characters. If you enjoy historical romance novels, then you will like reading After the Fall.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2015After the Fall is a sad and tragic story set in the Pacific during WWII. It tells the courageous story of many characters such as Lt. Riley Gilhouley, Maj. Rosemary Dodd, Ex-priest John Macklin and Glory Bee O’Halloran at Pearl Harbor.
Mere hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attack the Philippines, the island haven explodes into the chaos of battle. Excellent novel of courage , bravery, redemption and passion. The author, Lisa Bingham, nicely blended her characters into this dramatic story!
