New Orleans (The Civil War Saga) Kindle Edition
A Louisiana heiress is torn between two men as war looms on the horizon . . . The first in a sweeping trilogy by the USA Today–bestselling author.
As rumblings of secession begin in the south, New Orleans heiress Chantal Therrie is looking for a husband. Obligation drives her towards Lazare Galliard, the man who has it all, including wealth, power, and passion. But Rafferty O’Brien, an Irish immigrant who has come to New Orleans to seek his fortune, has an impossible-to-resist drive, and is determined to get what he wants—including the beautiful—but out of reach—Chantal.
As a war brews between the states, Chantal will be fighting her own war between what her heart and her mind want . . .
“A story as big, sprawling, passionate, and seething with excitement and danger as New Orleans itself . . . A riveting tale.” —Romantic Times

- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2024Best book I have read in some time! Great characters and lovely setting in New Orleans. The story kept me guessing until the end with surprising twists. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2014I enjoyed this series very much. The books could stand alone, but you really should read all 3. In my opinion there should be 5 books. There are 4 brothers and in the last book (Atlanta) you meet Fortune's best friend. The books do have sexual content. The scenes are not real long but it has quite a few through out. I thought they were well written.
I only had a few quirks with the book. Both hero and heroine are very likable. Rafferty is dead set to win the heart of Chantel. While she is promised to another. Chantel is full of spirit and independence. The author made her a little too hard headed at times. She made Rafferty appear weak a few times when he was the total opposite. The physical attraction was very strong between them and sexual tension was high. There was a nice build up to the actual sex. But, the part that bugged me was, it seemed almost every time they kissed it was in the middle of a argument and he would start kissing her and she would immediately melt. That got a little old. I liked that the book had a lot of characters. It covers a lot of ground. It never stays and drags in one spot. Though it is a romance book, it covered history very well to me. I felt like I actually learned a little bit. I'm in the south and I'm very familiar with a lot of the areas mentioned through out the series. The book has romance, action and some suspense. You can even call the evil step mother a villain :) I highly recommend this book along with Memphis and Atlanta. Happy reading!!! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2013The story is well written with realistic characters and an amazing plot, and the beginning of the Civil War is sprinkled within the story. The love scenes contain sex which I didn't know when I purchased the book. It is written with words to symbolize the male body parts. If you're not looking for sex within a book, then this isn't the Civil War or plantation read you'd want. If you don't mind it, you'll enjoy the read. I don't care for the sex in a book and would rather it be left behind closed doors, but I love a good plantation or Civil War read and this is one even if the sex were to be left out. I think it's written a bit like old-timey romance novels, but it's a good read. I loved the surprise twist near the end. The author is an amazing writer and would be without embedding sex.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2014Loved the story, loved the characters, loved the romance. Bought the other two books in the series immediately and enjoyed them all. Just goppy, throbbing loins lady books and they fill the bill perfectly. Sometimes it is great to sit back and lose oneself in stories one does not have to think about. Enough suspense to want everything to come out okay, but no big challenges. I have almost 2000 books on the civil war, and sometimes it is good to let the war be the background and the characters take over, as long as the characters are genuine, and never having been a member of a wealthy southern family during the war, it is not too big a stretch to imagine these superhero men and spoiled females are typical.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2015I enjoyed this book and the people in it. Well written details. A true love concurs all. Can't wait to read the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2014Entertaining. I enjoyed the trilogy for light reading. I liked the O'Brien family. Probably the best of the three books.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2014I thought it was quite good and had a lot of history in it. The only thing i had a problem with is that the author clearly avoided any of the religious history of the area. The people were generally very involved with their church which would have been the Catholic church. And who can overlook the practice of voodoo which New Orleans is famous for? The author neglected to write about any of the spirituality of the time. I guess she opted for the vivid description of the sexual encounters without giving the faith of the people equal time - sad! Otherwise the novel was a hit as far as historical fiction goes but largely a miss when it came to including the spiritual beliefs of the people!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2014Set during the last few years before the Civil War in New Orleans, a woman must choose between the man she has been promised to since childhood or the man she is falling in love with. This gives you romance but also a little bit of what Louisianna would have been like prior to the Civil War. There is plenty romance to go with the history.
