A senator’s death sends shock waves through Washington, DC, in this mystery by the New York Times–bestselling author and presidential daughter.

Sen. Cale Caldwell and his blue-blooded wife maintained a far-reaching and powerful grip on Capitol Hill society, but not powerful enough to save him from foul play. The influential senator’s life is cut short in brutal fashion at a glamorous reception held in his honor.

It happens just two short years after tragedy struck the Caldwell family in the form of the unsolved murder of his niece, but when attorney Lydia James suggests a connection, she’s shut down, and fast. Who stands to benefit from the Caldwells’ tragedies, and James’s silence—the senator’s political rivals, the media, or perhaps even the family’s closest allies?

Review

"Bright, witty, [and] full of Washington insider insight." — Houston Chronicle

"A good old-fashioned mystery." — Cosmopolitan

"She's up to the minute. And she's good." — Associated Press

From the Inside Flap

Between them, Senator Cale Caldwell and his blue-blooded wife controlled as much power on Capitol Hill as the law would allow. Sadly, it wasn't sufficient to protect him from a killer, even surrounded by his friends at a champagne reception in his honor.
The senator's murder wasn't the family's first brush with violence. Only two years ago, a niece had been murdered, her killer never found. But when attorney Lydia James, counsel to a senate committee investigating the tragedy, suggests there might be a connection between the two deaths, she's voted down fast. Yet strange rumors persist. The senator's death could benefit many people, among them a bitter political adversary, an ambitious talk show host, and a master of spin who makes even murder look
good. . . .

Mary Margaret Truman Daniel (February 17, 1924 – January 29, 2008), also known as Margaret Truman or Margaret Daniel, was an American singer who later became the successful author of a series of murder mysteries and a number of works on U.S. First Ladies and First Families, including a biography of her father, President Harry S. Truman. The only child of Harry Truman and First Lady Bess Truman, she was "a witty, hard-working Midwestern girl with singing talent who was neither particularly pretty nor terribly plain."

Loved this book. Real page turner! I love it when I enjoy a mystery so thoroughly! Loved the plot, all the twist & turns. Highly recommended.

It’s a bit dated, having been published in the 1980s, but the case was well-developed, and the murderer not known, at least by this reader, until the end. A few things, in the lesser plots, were left hanging, but since this is a series, maybe they are handled in later books. As for Margaret Truman, I sense the lady had a rather naughty personality, more like her Dad than we knew.

Suspenseful read and keeps you turning the pages. Murder with a great mix of DC corruption and people who seem to believe they are above the law.

A good, easy read especially suitable for beach, pool or airplane. The characters are entertaining, the plot is interesting, and if you live in, or have ever lived in, Washington, DC, you'll enjoy the many DC references.

Margaret Truman's mysteries keep a reader's interest going
throughout the whole book . They are not terribly gory nor
nor does she use a lot of foul language, maybe some, for
emphasis here and there. Always a great read!

Excellent read. A few of the characters are pretty slimy politicos. The main character grew as the mystery grew. I enjoyed this well-written book

Truman writes an easy mystery, she gives the reader a bunch of hints and red herrings. Pick one or all of the above. The first book I've read by this author and I will probably read more from her. An easy beach read.

I has been many yrs since I read books by this author but I remember enjoying her style and stories. This one not so much. It seemed to go on and on and I had difficulty finishing the book. I found the story line did not hold my attention but the key characters kept me reading to the end.
