Ask a Native New Yorker: Hard-Earned Advice on Surviving and Thriving in the Big City Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

Tips and lifestyle guidance on living in New York City from a journalist, native New Yorker and founder of Gothamist.com.

As a third-generation New Yorker who was born, bred, and educated there, Jake Dobkin was such a fan of his hometown that he started Gothamist, a popular and acclaimed website with a focus on news, events, and culture in the city, and “Ask a Native New Yorker” became one of its most popular columns. The book version features all original writing and aims to help newbies evolve into real New Yorkers with humor and a command of the facts. In forty-eight short essays and eleven sidebars, the book offers practical information about transportation, apartment hunting, and even cultivating relationships for anyone fresh to the Big Apple. Subjects include “Why is New York the greatest city in the world?,” “Where should I live?,” “Where do you find peace and quiet when you feel overwhelmed?,” and “Who do I have to give up my subway seat to?” Part philosophy, part anecdote collection, and part no-nonsense guide,
Ask a Native New Yorker will become the default gift for transplants to New York, whether they’re here for internships, college, or starting a new job.

Jake Dobkin wrote the "Ask a Native" column for Gothamist for so many years that he turned it into a book. In it, Dobkin makes the case that New York inconveniences (winter, sky high rent, late trains, roommates) are a small price to pay for living in the world's greatest city. He covers topics such as why do New Yorkers walk so fast (they don't, you're slow), should I get a cat or dog (cat), can you pee outside (yes), should you wash your hands after taking the subway (yes, but real New Yorkers don't touch anything with their hands). The columns are always a fun read, and the entire book didn't disappoint.

I loved everything about this book - I just traveled back to NY after a long, pandemic-induced hiatus; this book captures the New York spirit so well. I'm envious of the young people who take the chance and make this greatest city on Earth their home. It's a truly amazing place.

If you're considering moving to New York City, this book will be genuinely useful. Dobkin's unabashed pro-NYC bias is both charming and limiting. With a hand wave, he dismisses every place else on Earth and the upsides of growing up in a less demanding city. Still, I wish I'd read it when I was 20.

How soon one forgets about how great NYC really is as I was a New Yorker (Queens/Staten Island) for 45 years. I now live in Tampa Florida for the last 5 and not a day goes by that I don't think about New York. This book was pretty spot on about a LOT of things pertaining to the way NYC is and a lot of it I found to be quite humorous. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is considering moving to Gotham as this book is very insightful !!

Loved this book for anyone who is a New Yorker (native or otherwise) and frankly for everyone else. The author does a great job of capturing the joy and pain of living in New York but also manages to give sage advice on living in general. Def recommend.
