Dr. Sarina Fellows vowed to her deceased friend that she would take down the man responsible for her death and she did. Since then, she's been on a revenge mission to make powerful men pay, an all consuming cause that has resulted in her losing parts of herself in the process. That all changes when she sets her sights on the takedown of CEO Matteo Combe.
Matteo doesn't regret the physical altercation he had with his sister's partner at their father's funeral but his board of directors thinks the shocking display of masculine violence doesn't suit Combe Industries. Accordingly, they've hired Sarina to do a psychological assessment of Matteo's temperament to see whether he should still be in charge. But Matteo has no plans to abandon his family legacy. When the attraction between them causes Sarina to abandon her principles and engage in a steamy embrace, one that Matteo has caught on video, he uses it to blackmail her. He'll release the tape, and show the world that she's not the tough man-hater she appears to be unless she agrees to give the board a positive assessment of him. With no choice but to agree, it's not long before their passion simmers over again and Sarina ends up pregnant – with twins! Will her plans of revenge give way to the healing power of love instead?
There's a lot of self reflection and realization that both characters engage in as they work their way towards a happy ending. Sarina was deeply affected by her best friend's drug induced (involuntary) miscarriage and suicide and it has factored into every interaction with men she's had since then. It takes Matteo's underhanded maneuver to make her realize that she's been approaching every case with the assumption that the men involved are guilty of bullying or harassment and deserve to be ousted from their jobs, whether fair or not. Matteo gives her the chance to step back and examine herself, and she doesn't like what she sees.
Similarly, in forcing Sarina to reveal her deepest pain to him, that of losing her best friend to suicide, Matteo realizes that he is behaving just like his father would have, searching for weakness to further his own aims. He resolves to change things, but not until after he and Sarina have spent a sensual night together, one where she left early in the morning after and didn't return. When they encounter each other again and she is pregnant, Matteo is hurt and furious with Sarina for not revealing her pregnancy to him. But he remembers what it was like to watch his parents fighting day in and day out and resolves that history will not repeat itself with Sarina.
From Matteo's cold and forbidding ancestral English home to his abundantly furnished and warm monastic retreat, the settings are favorable for sharing of intimacies, both physical and emotional. I think the happy ending comes with a bit of insta-love considering that Matteo and Sarina hadn't really had time to digest the pregnancy and its impact on their tempestuous relationship. It's a sometimes dark and painful tale, but with a burning hope for better and a sweet epilogue that shows that Matteo and Sarina have found happiness in each other. It's an enjoyable, emotional read and I look forward to reading more about Matteo's siblings.
