The Modern Cook's Year: More than 250 Vibrant Vegetarian Recipes to See You Through the Seasons Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 122 ratings

This seasonal vegetarian cookbook from a James Beard Award nominee is “a triumph” (Jamie Oliver).

The Modern Cook’s Year offers more than 250 vegetarian recipes for a year’s worth of delicious meals. Acclaimed cookbook author Anna Jones puts vegetables at the center of the table, using simple yet inventive ingredients. Her recipes are influenced by her English roots and by international flavors, spanning from the Mediterranean to Sri Lanka, Japan, and beyond.

Attuned to the subtle transitions between seasons, Jones divides the year into six significant moments, suggesting elderflower-dressed fava beans with burrata for the dawn of spring, smoked eggplant flatbread for a warm summer evening, orzo with end-of-summer tomatoes and feta for the early fall, and velvety squash broth with miso and soba to warm you in the winter, among many others. Enhanced by beautiful color photos,
The Modern Cook’s Year showcases Jones’s uncanny knack for knowing exactly what you want to eat, at any particular moment.

Poor Condition even after replacement
The content of the book is excellent. The quality of the book leaves much to be desired. My first copy arrived covered in greasy fingerprints, a completely split binding and bent corners. The replacement I received moments ago was scuffed and dirty. Customer satisfaction seems to be a low priority. Overall, the book seems to be cheaply made. Buyer beware. Choose your own from a brick and mortar bookstore on this one.

I've loved all of Anna Jones's books and thoroughly enjoy cooking out of them every chance I have! I rate them very high for plant-based cooking since the author does a fantastic job letting you know when substitutions won't affect the overall dish. The index is also a magical place - mush better than a lot of cookbooks I've had in the past.

I will note there is an error in the book. The recipe on page 34, turmeric and coconut-baked aloo gobi, doesn't continue on the next page but on page 54.

I bought this as a gift for a chef. He loves it. Buying cook books for experienced cooks can be a challenge, so this was greatly appreciated.

Jones has created what is, for me, the perfect book of recipes: each entry is considered, easily achievable, and delicious. This book and its author deserve only five stars. Bravo, Anna!

Modern Cook's Year defines recipes based on the time of the year when the ingredients are at their prime. What a wonderful idea. To support most recipes are beautiful photos that inspire and help a cook know what they are trying to achieve. Also helpful! For this American cook, some of the ingredients are a bit unusual and challenging to find. The combinations of vegetables and spices are unique and special. Vibrant, beautiful food!

Excellent cookbook. With everyone’s dog publishing home baked sourdough deep fried snickers with fermented shade grown shoelaces, this book stands above as a real resource for people with genuine interest in good food and for those who actually know the difference between a tangerine and a corkscrew.

I bought this book based on the reviews and unfortunately, it wasn't a great fit for us. Flipping through, I didn't find enough recipes that looked/sounded delicious -- there weren't any that I felt, wow-I HAVE to make this. I think this is probably best if you've been eating vegetarian for a while vs. just dipping your toe in. Flavor combinations in many cases didn't feel familiar to us and in general didn't sound that appetizing.

I love Anna Jones, her "A Modern Way to Eat" is one of my favorite cookbooks of all time. I haven't tried anything from this new cookbook yet, but just wanted to write a review to complain about how my book arrived with scuffs and stains and scratches all over the front cover. I wish there was a way I could review the Amazon shipping service separately from the content of the book, because the Cookbook = 5 stars, Amazon = 2

the breakfast cake recipe made the whole book worth it for me. I have it in Kindle and liked it so much I wanted a more readable format so I bought it again. Great healthy, vegetable recipes that even a meat eater like me loves!
