A revised and refreshed edition of Culpeper’s classic book on herbal remedies.

“[An] updated and beautifully designed guide . . . ” —
Booklist

For more than 360 years, Nicholas Culpeper’s historic guide to herbal remedies has been THE definitive book on the subject. Culpeper, an English herbalist, is the author of the bestselling herbal guide of all time. He offered valuable and sometimes unusual advice on using, gathering, and preparing herbs. Now, this beautifully illustrated new edition, edited and with commentary by acclaimed US herbalist and bestselling author Steven Foster, combines the charm and information of Culpeper’s original seventeenth-century text with up-to-date, modern, practical usage. It includes details about where to find each herb, astrology, and medicinal benefits.

Bestselling author, photographer, consultant, and herbalist Steven Foster has forty years of experience in the herbal field. He started his career at Sabbathday Lake (Maine) Shaker Village Herb Department—America’s oldest herb business, dating to 1799. Foster is the author or coauthor of eighteen books, including the
Peterson Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs of Eastern and Central North America, 3rd ed. (with James A. Duke). Foster is also senior author of National Geographic’s A Desk Reference to Nature’s Medicine (with Rebecca Johnson). An acclaimed photographer, his work appears in countless publications. He is a contributing editor to HerbalGram, the journal of the American Botanical Council in Austin, Texas. He lives in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Culpeper’s Herbal, frequently re-released in varying forms, has been the standard and most popular Western guide to herbs for hundreds of years. This edition, edited by author, photographer, and herbalist Foster, includes content from several previous versions and is based heavily on the 1653 second edition. Each plant is described by including its common and modern scientific names, where it grows, its “government and virtues,” modern uses, and cautions. While the modern uses and cautions are written from Foster’s current-day perspective, Culpeper’s voice is very present in the bulk of the text and readers will likely appreciate the political and social commentary that is part of his writing. The juxtaposition of voices is successful and serves to illustrate that a writer’s time and place always inform his or her work, no matter the subject. Color botanical illustrations are primarily taken from the 1824 expanded edition but there are also many from other sources, which are noted. This updated and beautifully designed guide is likely to be popular where there is interest in plants and/or natural medicine.”— Booklist

Steven Foster is the author or co-author of ninteen books, the latest bestseller is a new THIRD EDITION of the Peterson Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs of Eastern and Central North America (with James A. Duke, photography by Steven Foster). Why a new edition? The new edition has over 700 photographs, 88% of which are new images. The book includes 60 additional species and is updated throughout with updated scientific and family names, distribution information, and flowering times. From 2000 (2nd ed) to 2013, the medicinal plant research literature has increased by five-fold compared with ALL data published prior to 2000! Jim Duke and myself scoured the literature with an eye toward scientific and ethnobotanical/historical data that reconciles tradition with science. In addition we updated safety, toxicity, and drug interaction information. In short this is a new book, that stands alone beside the two previous editions.

See also my new edited 2019 edition of Nicholas Culpeper;s Complete Herbal (edited from the original 1653 edition, updated in contemporary English, with annotations from Sterling). In 2010 I collaborated on National Geographic Guide to Medicine Herbs (with Rebecca L. Johnson, Tieraona Low Dog, M.D. & David Kiefer, M.D.; Photographs by Steven Foster, with a Foreword by Andrew Weil, M.D). I am also the co-author of National Geographic's A Desk Reference to Nature's Medicine (2006, with Rebecca Johnson), named a 2007 New York Public Library "Best of Reference." I am the senior author of three other Peterson Field Guides, including A Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs (with Dr. James A. Duke), 2nd edition, 2000; A Field Guide to Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs with Christopher Hobbs, (2002); and A Field Guide to Venomous Animals and Poisonous Plants of North America (with Roger Caras, 1995).

My goal is simply to explore the relationship between people and plants in words and images. My travels have taken me to every continent except Antarctica, mostly in search of medicinal plants to photograph from the Amazon rainforest to the highlands of Vietnam. In 1974, I began my career at the Herb Department of the Sabbathday Lake, Maine, Shaker Community, America's oldest herb business dating to 1799. It has been an extraordinary journey, and it is my pleasure to share my experience through my books.

I am an amateur herbalist and while taking a course I learned about the writing of Nicholas Culpepper. His original work was published in 1652 . This edition takes the words of Nicholas Culpepper and brings them to a modern understanding of how to identify and use each of the listed herbs. The pictures are beautifully descriptive and the combination of old English and modern helps take the reader to a time long before themselves! Very easy to understand and fun to read !

    Large well made book

This book would be great for the budding herbalist. When I started getting into herbalism my reference book to flip through was Grieves' A Modern Herbal and that had a bit more information than I could actually understand. This book puts things more simply, and this would be a great book to flip through to familiarize yourself with many plants uses and for having a reference for treating minor ailments that don't necessarily require a trip to the doctor when you are otherwise healthy.
However as a collector of Herbal's, and someone whose favorite person in history is Culpeper, I needed a copy of his herbal. So this was quite a disappointing purchase. I thought Foster's writings (which I am a fan of his aswell) would be in addition to Culpeper's and it would be clear who wrote what. It wasn't.
If you are looking for a beautifully illustrated herbal to learn the various medicinal uses of plants, definitely worth purchasing. If you are looking to buy Culpeper's Herbal, you may want to find something else so you know what he actually wrote.

Every entree has a picture of the plant , modern uses , where found in North America, in addition to Culpeper's description; government and virtues. The pages are large (9 3/4 X 7 5/8"). Cover is thick plastic which should stand up to lots of use. Print is large. This is a very practical and useful updated edition to Culpeper's Complete Herbal. I highly recommend this edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Reviewed in Mexico on January 15, 2024
This book clearly explains the medicinal and general characteristics of a wide variety of herbs, plants, and flowers. I highly recomment it if you're looking for more natural remedies and medecine, although be aware that the English used by the original author sometimes requires a certain degree of interpretation (if English is not your first language you may need some explanations for popular sayings).
The quality of this Edition is excellent and the colors are vivid, the drawings and images are easy to understand. The package arrived on time and in great conditions.

A really nice, updated edition of this classic with lots of charming illustrations. Indispensible for the bookshelf of any herbalist/botanist/naturalist/witch. Culpeper's original foreword is retained, allowing the reader to "hear" his charmingly archaic voice.
