How Are Your Finances Shaping Your Heart?

Jesus knew that how we think about money shapes our character. Our approach can make us more like him—full of contentment, purpose, and freedom—or it can cause a tragic separation from God and the joy he offers. We need a firm foundation for faith and finances. In True Riches, John Cortines and Gregory Baumer invite us to experience four transformations in our financial lives, moving from

  • pride to gratitude so that we see everything as a gift;
  • coveting to contentment so that we spend wisely;
  • anxiety to trust so that we save appropriately; and
  • indifference to love so that we give extravagantly.

Full of scripture, personal stories, and practical application, True Riches offers a clear path away from the empty pursuit of wealth and into more intimate relationship with God.

"I know and love Greg Baumer and John Cortines. I admire their hearts for God and their grasp of what money is, and of what financial stewardship means. I’m grateful that the good news about generous giving has so touched their lives. Greg and John are enthusiastic and articulate concerning life-changing truths. I really enjoyed True Riches and I believe you will too."

Dr. Evan Lenow, professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

"True Riches is a book that will challenge you to rethink your perspective on money and giving. It is both encouraging and convicting. I am grateful for the work of John Cortines and Greg Baumer. Their insight into God's perspective on money is useful for Christians everywhere. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to have their financial lives redirected in a God-centered way."

Howard Dayton, founder of Compass

"True Riches is a superb book by any measure. It is artfully written, thoroughly biblical, wonderfully practical, and incredibly motivating. I couldn't put it down, because it so clearly articulates God's heart for how we are to joyfully handle money and possessions. I believe it's destined to become a classic and heartily recommend it!"

Peter Greer, president and CEO of HOPE International and coauthor of MISSION DRIFT

A native of Indianapolis, IN, Greg Baumer grew up attending Indiana Hoosier basketball games and working with his dad every Saturday in the family business. He went on to earn his BS in finance, business economics, and public policy from Indiana University in 2008.

Greg began his career with McKinsey & Company, serving clients in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. He then worked as an investment professional for the private equity firm Advent International, where he focused on investments in the healthcare sector. After earning his MBA from Harvard Business School in 2015, Greg joined Nashville-based healthcare technology startup naviHealth as vice president of product development and innovation.

It was while taking a Harvard Divinity School course called God & Money that Greg began to think deeply about the intersection of faith and finance. As he came to the startling conclusion that underpins God & Money—that Christians are called to a radical level of generosity—he moved beyond tithing to embrace a financial strategy centered on infinite giving. Greg now hopes to experience the incredible joy and satisfaction that comes only through a life lived generously. He also aspires to participate in the mobilization of God’s church to launch a wave of generosity never before experienced on Earth.

Greg lives in Nashville with his lovely wife Alison and their young son (and a baby girl on the way!).

True Riches is an inspiring read and one that has challenged me to my core. John and Greg do an excellent job of highlighting what Jesus and the Bible say about money - and it's a lot! My family and I have had many great conversations about the purpose of our possessions and how we can be faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us. Even more so, the concepts in this book have stirred both great dialogue and real, tangible actions with other believers. I'm thankful for great men like John and Greg and their willingness to dive deep into Scripture. You'll both enjoy True Riches and also be challenged by the high road that Jesus calls us to!

Read this book a few weeks ago, and rereading it as part of a smaller group study. I really enjoy how engaging and unpretentious the writing it. Comes across as down to earth and practical with real examples and suggestions; but at the same time it deals with challenging underlying truths that are complex and not spoke about enough. The simple ideas of "margin" and "enough" were really helpful for our group discussion as many of us are younger and will likely earn more over the next few years.

The Kindle version is listed as having 176 pages while the Hardcover has 144 pages. Why the 32-page difference?

This is a small book with big ideas. Weaving solid financial thought with a Christian-based approach on how we view money, it can be life-changing. If we let it. It really made me think about my ideas surrounding money and my relationship to it. The section about shifting our perspective about tithing really stuck with me, as did the chapter on giving to charities first and developing a calling to their work second.
