Can You Hear God Now?: How to Journey to a Deeper Relationship with God Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

“Based firmly on biblical truth  . . . Practical steps to enter into an interactive relationship with God—where we talk to Him, and yes, He talks to us” (Dr. Craig Von Buseck, editor at Inspiration.org).

Can You Hear God Now? addresses the specific question of whether or not Christians believe God speaks to them individually. Many people pray, but few listen to God. Susan Roberts surveyed hundreds of people from various backgrounds, religious affiliations, genders, and ages, from twenty-four states and three foreign countries, to determine if and how they communicate with God. The survey reveals interesting trends in today’s thinking about hearing God and how God speaks in a variety of fascinating ways. Many of those surveyed even share stories about their personal interaction with God. Can You Hear God Now? combines these stories with Biblical principles to encourage readers to develop their own two-way communication with God, making their spiritual lives come alive.

“May be one of the most useful recent books on Christian faith and living . . . A book very much worth reading, studying, and applying.” —Col. Alexander Shine (ret. army), lay leader for military chapels and Officer Christian Fellowship

“Susan Roberts’ stories are credible and provide inspiring examples of God’s interactions with normal and sane people. Her book brings acuity to our ears.” —Dr. Marshall Shelley, director of the Doctor of Ministry Program, Denver Seminary

Review

The world is full of noise, but Susan Roberts’s prayerful Can You Hear God Now? cuts through it all to find some needed holy clarity.Learning how to listen to the still small voice of God takes a helpful and faithful guide, Roberts knows. Her book draws from a survey that asked participants to describe how they heard God’s voice. From the responses she draws anecdotes, combining them to showcase themes and ideas about discerning holiness amid the chaos.First focusing on preparing oneself for hearing from God, the book explores topics like finding the right relationship with God, how to spend time with the Bible, and being spiritually ready to connect to the divine. Next the text considers prayer, including handling an answer of “no” and what to do when God’s voice is unclear. Everything works toward a specific consideration of discernment, including tips about what to listen for, how to listen actively, and how to connect to the Holy Spirit as a guide. The book’s theories are tied to poignant personal stories that highlight what this looks like in practice, in the lives of everyday Christians who seek God’s help. They are people wondering about what house to buy, how to find a lost diamond, or how to listen when God doesn’t respond as expected. Reflection questions follow each chapter with reminders that human beings need to “stop and refresh.”Practical and engaging, Can You Hear God Now? knows that, while God is infallible, our discernment is not. It imparts confidence that hearing God’s voice is a result of preparedness and openness to hearing what God has to say.
- Jeremiah Rood, Foreword Reviews (July/August 2019)

Susan is always up for an outing--traveling, seeing new places and things, and having interesting experiences (like creating a crisis with military police swarming a hotel where she had left her suitcase unattended). She loves gardening and enjoys animals--especially wildlife sightings. Her favorites are bears and foxes.

Growing up in Massachusetts, she then attended college in Illinois, graduating from Wheaton College with a BA in English and Teaching, and a MA in Interdisciplinary Studies-Christian Education. Susan is now pursuing a PHD at Denver Seminary.

At Wheaton, Sue met her husband, Perry, who was preparing for a commission into the Army. Their assignments led them to many places including TX, GA, IL, HI, WA and IA. Each place offered many new adventures which Sue enjoyed experiencing with her husband and three children. After the Army, they retired to Colorado where Sue worked in the local school district. Susan and Perry are now both retired and residing in Arvada, Colorado. They have three grown and married children and five grandchildren.

Sue has published a book of devotions ("Everywhere I Look, God is There") about finding God in everyday places. She has also published a book ("Can You Hear God Now? How to Journey to a Deeper Relationship with God") that explores ways to interact with God in personal ways. Survey results from more than 600 respondents, from many different religious backgrounds, form the basis for the book, along with numerous inspiring and moving stories shared in the survey results. In addition, Sue writes weekly devotions for her church and has published devotions in both online and pamphlet-style devotion books.

Appeals to fundamentalist oriented evangelical Christians
Unless you are a fundamentalist oriented evangelical Christian you probably will not like this book or find it relevant. Among other things there is mention of being oppressed by demons. There is constant quotation of scriptures and notions about God "testing" you. It requires a fairly fundamentalist evangelical Christian orientation for you to be able to get through this book without wanting to return it

This book - completely backed by scripture, share personal stories of how God speaks to us! Love that this author did a wide-spread survey to get very personal stories of God speaking to individuals - besides sharing her own experiences. Helping me to be a better "listener" to God's voice in my life, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I plan on reading it multiple times, as during this first read through - I saw things I hadn't thought of before...and I believe that God will reveal even more as I do a second and possible third read through of it!

I liked how this book encourages all of us to experience God in our unique, relationship with Him! This talks from an overlooked viewpoint that is essential to our getting closer with Him. I also love the Survey Results at the end of the book, with the responses to different questions about God according to female/male, different age groups. Very interesting.

This a great book for those who are seeking to know God better and to communicate with Him in a deeply personal way. It is totally built on Scripture and then applies it to everyday life. People from many walks of life share their experiences in hearing from God in different ways which helps them in making decisions, receiving comfort, ministering to others and dealing with a variety of challenges in their lives. I enthusiastically recommend this book to help build your faith and strengthen your relationship to God.

Many Christians today don't believe God talks to His people anymore. If you read "Can you Hear God Now?" you might just change your mind and realize that statement is far from the truth. This book talks about the many different ways God can speak to each of us in this day and age. Each chapter ends with a series of questions and lends itself readily to group discussion. I strongly recommend Mrs. Roberts book.
