An American Duchess Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 4,876 ratings

A woman’s heart dares to defy the rules of Victorian society in USA Today bestselling author Caroline Fyffe’s novel of romance, royalty, and a little revenge.

In Kent, England, the arrival of Beranger Northcott, Duke of Brightshire, causes a stir. Because with the duke comes his new American bride, who isn’t quite what anyone expects. By accepting the hand of her beloved, Emma Brinkman went from hardworking Colorado rancher to duchess. Now she’s expected to comport herself as nobility. Overnight. For Emma—stifled, homesick, and unable to shake the feeling she’s being watched—the metamorphosis is a challenge. And if Emma’s suspicions are correct, perhaps even a dangerous one.

Fortunately, Emma has found a trusted friend in the orphaned Charlotte, Brightshire’s scullery maid. Charlotte longs to experience—if only for a moment—the luxuries and gentry romance that come with a titled life. When one of the duke’s handsome cousins takes notice of Charlotte, the castle kitchen is set abuzz with speculation.

In navigating their two different stations, both servant and duchess alike will discover all they have in common—from secret fantasies to daring hearts to upending the rules of society. And that finding their places in the world—and love—is a dream that can come true—no matter the risks.

From Rancher to Duchess Emma is up to the task.

From Rancher to Duchess Emma is up to the task.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wasn't aware Heart of Mine came before introducing Emma and Barenger, but it still could be read as a stand alone with a few more interesting characters added. I've never read anything by Caroline Fyffe before and I was impressed. The love stories were endearing, and I loved the characters. A good mystery was thrown in keeping this story very busy! The story is about a young American woman crossing the Atlantic to take her place beside her husband, who has just inherited a Duchy. Being excepted into the English Aristocracy is hard enough, but when your mother-in-law is a she devil it's almost impossible. None the less Emma is up to the task, and becomes a strong independent Duchess who is a great partner to her Duke. If you love a good Victorian romance and mystery you will enjoy The American Duchess

Honestly, I usually read Barbara Cartland classics because I love period pieces that describe the clothing and food in detail. However, I gave this a try, and it was really enjoyable! I thought maybe it would be the same level of “eh” prose (most of Cartland’s paragraphs being single sentences), but this author really puts a lot of thought into realistic dialogue, surprising plot, and overall details. I wish she would describe the clothing more! I seriously learned a lot from Cartland books about general aristocratic English culture, names and terms, and even law. Yes, I know it is fiction and should be taken with a grain of salt, but as an American, it was still very educational. This book also gives you a general sense of norms at the time. The main complaint I have is that the end didn’t totally get developed. The reason for why (person) did what (person) did was somewhat logical, but the way the other characters treated the situation I felt was somewhat dismissive. Also, the whole way one of the romances develops was cute, but reallllly obvious. Who really thinks things like, I’m totally not blushing because I think he/she is cute? Overall, excellent read for just $4.99!

This book is a descent story, if not a bit cheesy at times, but it has clean language and is easy reading or listening.

Once again, Ms. Caroline Fyffe has taken her readers on a roller-coaster ride in this emotional journey of family, loss, secrets, new beginnings, and love. While this story will read well as a stand-alone, it is also a continuation from Heart of Mine, book three in the Colorado Heart with the meeting of Emma Brinkman and Beranger North. While this new story is not part of the Colorado Heart series, but an extension of their story it will have them leaving America and is a new beginning in England.

In this story, Emma Brinkman and Beranger Northcott (his tue surname) will be quickly married, following the information that he has inherited the title of Duke of Brightshire and they will leave Colorado and sail to England. The story will encompass the changes and memories that Beranger will face returning to where he lived, even if he was treated poorly by his step-mother. He will meet a half-sister that was born after he left England and worked on board a ship until he made his mark in America.

The story is full of mystery, suspense, danger, secrets, angst, but also has new beginnings, making changes in how things in life turn out. It has a large cast of characters in the English town of Brightshire that will play major roles in this tale. It was always proclaimed the Beranger was illegitimate but how will the people look at him now that the truth is out that his parents had been married and in fact, Gavin was the illegitimate child?

“The people in Brightshire are delighted you’re home. Prove to them their memories of the resilient, clever, and courageous thirteen-year-old boy are correct. Show them you have come back a man, and you have all those qualities and more.”

Not everyone is happy that Beranger has returned, and with an American wife as the new duchess. The dowager duchess was always cruel and hateful to Beranger, and she has groomed her daughter, Lady Audrey to take over the title someday. She is no more than a wolf in sheep’s clothes and just as two-faced as she always had been. But now, her status is changed, and she must rely on Beranger for her well-being. He is more gracious than most people would be considering.

“Fairly and always. Whenever and now.”

The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly in people—and all that will play a part in this tale. With health issues plaguing Beranger, is someone trying to harm him? A critical letter of Emma’s from her father will be stolen from their room. A mystery about the death of the previous Duke, Gavin, will have secrets that could harm others.

The story will have another romance taking place between Charlotte and Tristan and the mystery behind her life will eventually unfold with surprises. While their story isn’t always smooth sailing, it does have several surprises along the way.

This was truly an awesome story! I loved the transition from the Ranch to the Castle. That the main character found his true place and was the true son was absolutely lovely!

Ok I’ve read Caroline Fyffe book on the ‘sisters’ or ‘The Five Sisters Ranch’ series and I couldn’t wait for this one to come out. I completely remember how Emma & Berenger fell in love in Colorado—ᴀɴᴅ no matter how it came across with a more like a ‘June to July romance, fell in love & got married” pretty faster than June to July. The Duke by his late father in England, Berenger was determined to marry Emma. Of course she wss reluctant, but at the late minute while one of her other sisters was getting married, Beranger told her he had to leave Colorado to go back to claim his name, so the real heir would get what was deserved. That was all a review on how they met & fell in love....That’s where the book shouldn’t have become ‘An American Duchess’.

Maybe it’s me since I’m originally from the 🇬🇧 but Emma travels a long voyage to a mansion and WHY during this LONG voyage, I can’t believe Berenger doesn’t give her what to expect, how a Duchess should understand the snobby rich Brits?! It was as if they spoke about nothing on this?! Especially since she was now going to be the woman in charge of A LOT OF ROOMS, household servants, etc. But the minute she arrives she seriously acts like she knew nothing & started giving rides to strange lower class set of people and doesn’t know the difference between a foot man or a butler?!

It frustrated me to no end, because Berenger didn’t want her to change, and loved her naivety. But that’s the way it was run in the 1800’s with Dukes & their Duchess! It’s no different today either! So no matter how much he loved her as herself, he had an obligation to show her the ropes & give her all the info about his step mother, who hated him & Emma made sure she found out about this horrible woman.

Sʜᴇ ᴅɪᴅ...ʙᴜᴛ ɪᴛ ɪs SOOO sʟᴏᴡ ɢᴏɪɴɢ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴇɢɪɴɴɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪ ʟɪᴛᴇʀᴀʟʟʏ ʜᴀᴅ ᴛᴏ sᴛᴀʀᴛ ᴏᴠᴇʀ manny TIMES cuz I fell asleep many TIMES listening!

As far as the rest of the book. There were so many other characters and it was if I was reading “Downton Abby”! Many times it was too many to remember. I love books with other characters than the main ones, but when these appeared, I again fell asleep.

So In my ending, don’t NOT read the book because it wasn’t my favorite! I can be very picky, but it’s just me. If certain characters were not involved, about 30-40 minutes could have been chopped off from the book, and my review may have been different. As I said in my title it’s too close to a Harlequin Romance, and that’s not why I decided to read it, those are books I try my hardest to stay away from!

I have all 3 books of the Brinkmanship sisters and enjoyed them immensely. I was touched that their father left them letters to read on their birthdays.. very touching.. the author did a great job depicting their thoughts, dreams and turmoil of knowing what had transpired to them while they were young.. I am looking forward to Katie’s story and looking forward to the England stories as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 2, 2019
I really enjoyed this book - as I have the other three books in this series. I was a bit unsure about the setting changing from the American West to Victorian England but with all the mysteries, twists and turns I have enjoyed it just as much as they other books. My only criticism would be that the narrator’s attempt at a Welsh Accent was a little off putting at times - but that’s because I’m Welsh and it didn’t really detract from my enjoyment of this otherwise very nicely narrated story.

Carolyn Fyffe is a masterful storyteller and the American Duchess is another great story that goes from the US west to England - continuing the story of the Brinkman sisters. Love the way she writes compelling character-driven stories, that are woven beautifully into the period of which they are written.
