Pretty Revenge: A Novel Kindle Edition
The name of the game is revenge—no matter the cost—in this emotionally charged thriller reminiscent of The Wife Between Us and The Perfect Nanny.
Kerrie O’Malley, jobless and in an unfulfilling relationship, can isolate the exact moment in her life when things veered off course—the night she was irrevocably wronged by someone she looked up to. Eighteen years later, when Kerrie sees the very woman who destroyed her life on television, a fire ignites inside her. The stakes are high. The risks are perilous. But she’ll stop at nothing to achieve the retribution she deserves.
Jordana Pierson is a gilded New Yorker who appears to have it all: wealth, glamour, a successful and handsome husband, and a thriving wedding concierge business. Her record is spotless. Her business is flourishing. No one knows the truth about her and the dark shadows of her past.
No one, that is, except Kerrie.
Exploring just how far someone will go for vengeance, Pretty Revenge is “a fun, twisty thrill ride about the dark side of female friendship” (PopSugar).

Review
"Old wounds reopen with a vengeance in the latest from Emily Liebert, an irresistible page turner set against the glamorous backdrop of moneyed New York. Pretty Revenge twists its way through a riveting tale of blame and obsession, where revenge isn’t as neat or pretty as it seems. The perfect summer beach read." (Kimberly Belle, author of Dear Wife )
“Liebert’s forte is creating authentic female characters, as she does here with those in both primary and secondary roles, while building suspense by withholding until late in the book the details of just what Jordan did to Kerrie 18 years earlier. A psychological thriller with a surprising resolution.” (Booklist)
“Liebert’s skillful character development illustrates the complexity of human motivations and encourages sympathy for unlikely characters. Aficionados of the TV show Revenge or those who enjoy contemporary psychological suspense set in an affluent society will want to consider.” (Library Journal)
"Liebert (Those Secrets We Keep) delivers a first-rate thriller in this irresistible tale of a wedding planner with a dodgy past and the longtime enemy who aims to expose her secrets.. Fans of Leila Slimani’s The Perfect Nanny will devour this expertly paced novel." (Publishers Weekly)
“A fun, twisty thrill ride about the dark side of female friendship.” (PopSugar)

I wasn't keen on the start of this one. I thought for sure that it would just be a bunch of poor me from the main character. I was pleased that the author didn't drone on too much in hopes to get the reader to feel sorry for the main character. I can't say that I liked her character, but I didn't want to punch her in the throat. There's always that.
The slow, methodical plot of revenge was set at a good pace. I felt myself curious to how it all played out in the end. I wasn't even sure how I wanted it to end. Once I got to know the characters, I wasn't so sure who I wanted to come out on top.
I will say, I wouldn't classify this as a thriller. It's more of a domestic drama with a bit of a sinister undertone to it. But most certainly not a full-on thriller. Even with that, I enjoyed this book all the way to the end.
We have two women harboring a secret. First, there’s Jordana- seemingly prim and proper, but full of vitriol; she’s formerly Jordan, who ran away 18 years ago and started a new life. Second, there’s Kerrie (new alias: Olivia); Kerrie fully believes that Jordan ruined her life all those years ago, as a result of a secret that the reader is not made privy to initially.
The two characters are reunited when Kerrie/Olivia sees an opportunity to infiltrate Jordana’s life by becoming her assistant. The story is told in alternating perspectives, present time. With that, we get a complete understanding of what makes Jordana tick and all the ways in which Kerrie attempts to establish trust so that she can enact revenge.
The thing is, Kerrie is wingin’ it on the revenge front. She doesn’t have a game plan, just the general notion that she wants to get payback for whatever Jordan did to her all those years ago. With that, this is not a sizzling tale in terms of retribution acts. Kerrie doesn’t start to do anything revenge-y until around 45% (kindle count), and even then it’s fairly tame. Her plan does pick up, and you learn the reason for Kerrie’s motives at 65%.
The fact is that neither of these women is ruthless, so don’t go into this novel thinking that there’ll be nail-biting encounters. Instead, you’ll get the story of two women and how their lives have shaped up since one fateful evening 18 years ago. For those who are interested - there’s quite a lot colorful language and descriptions, especially as it relates to Jordana’s thoughts on her social circle.
Earlier on, I would have given this novel 4 stars; but by the time I got to the end, I felt like the resolve was flat and too tied up with a bow. I never felt completely invested in either woman. I didn’t dislike them, and I had a general feeling that it’d be nice for life to turn around for them, but my emotions about the whole thing just stayed at a flat line the entire time. I do like the author’s writing style/vocabulary, and there were moments where I could see promise and real bite to the words. It was an easy read, but not particularly memorable. I liked how things turned out, I just wish there had been more conflict leading up to both the reveal and the resolution.
Kerrie just lost her job and no sooner is she feeling sorry for herself when an idea comes to her that she must jump on it and out of that slump. She picks herself up off the couch in small-town Connecticut and high tails it to New York City where she is going to take on a new persona. Once there, she is going to exact her plan and become the best assistant there ever was to her nemesis. The one who took it all away from her. Unbeknownst to Jordana, who has also refashioned her life, and made not only a name for herself as the premiere wedding concierge, in Manhattan, but she is married to a wealthy investment banker who knows nothing of her past. And she plans to keep it that way.
What happens next is a frantic game of covering up tracks and maintaining multiple facades. Both women are running from something and toward a better life. Or so they think.
Revenge is sweet, isn't it?

Jordan is wealthy, successful and about to have her past catch up with her.
If you love a fast read with a scorned woman bent on revenge then this book is for you! I liked this, it was a quick read and interesting enough just didn't blow my mind.
