Pretty Revenge: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 284 ratings

“A riveting tale of subterfuge, betrayal, and retribution set among the glittering world of New York’s elite.” —Liv Constantine, bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish

The name of the game is revenge—no matter the cost—in this emotionally charged thriller reminiscent of The Wife Between Us and The Perfect Nanny.

Kerrie O’Malley, jobless and in an unfulfilling relationship, can isolate the exact moment in her life when things veered off course—the night she was irrevocably wronged by someone she looked up to. Eighteen years later, when Kerrie sees the very woman who destroyed her life on television, a fire ignites inside her. The stakes are high. The risks are perilous. But she’ll stop at nothing to achieve the retribution she deserves.

Jordana Pierson is a gilded New Yorker who appears to have it all: wealth, glamour, a successful and handsome husband, and a thriving wedding concierge business. Her record is spotless. Her business is flourishing. No one knows the truth about her and the dark shadows of her past.

No one, that is, except Kerrie.

Exploring just how far someone will go for vengeance,
Pretty Revenge is “a fun, twisty thrill ride about the dark side of female friendship” (PopSugar).

Not what I expected, but so good!

Not what I expected, but so good!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5Pretty Revenge by Emily Liebert ended up being not at all what I expected, but that was no problem because I really enjoyed it!What it's about: Kerrie O'Malley can remember exactly when her life took a turn for the worse, and it was when the older girl she looked up to stole everything she had left. So when Kerrie sees her former idol on TV seemingly with everything she lacks, she decides it is time to exact her revenge...I loved the pacing of Pretty Revenge, and I read it incredibly quickly since it only took me just shy of 3 hours and 49 minutes. I also loved the switches between Kerrie and Jordana's point of views because I thought it helped the pacing, which already seemed fast due to the short chapters.I wouldn't say I particularly loved either Kerrie or Jordana, but I did become more endeared to both of them by the time the book ended. Both of them are dealing with some pretty heavy issues and you can't help but feel sorry for them as the truth comes out.I thought the beginning chapter endings repeated themselves a little in Kerrie's viewpoint, but that quickly stopped and I didn't feel like anything else was repetitive.Song/s the book brought to mind: A mix of Better Than Revenge and Speak Now, both by Taylor Swift.Final Thought: I wanted to keep this review short and sweet which were my exact feelings about this book. If you are looking for a quick, binge-worthy read that focuses on retribution then I highly recommend reading Pretty Revenge. I loved Liebert's writing style and while this might be my first time reading her novels, it definitely will not be my last!I received an Advance Review Copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This is the first book I've read of this author's. I'm not usually a fan of revenge books. They tend to be over the top and induce eye rolls from me. I can honestly say I enjoyed this one.

I wasn't keen on the start of this one. I thought for sure that it would just be a bunch of poor me from the main character. I was pleased that the author didn't drone on too much in hopes to get the reader to feel sorry for the main character. I can't say that I liked her character, but I didn't want to punch her in the throat. There's always that.

The slow, methodical plot of revenge was set at a good pace. I felt myself curious to how it all played out in the end. I wasn't even sure how I wanted it to end. Once I got to know the characters, I wasn't so sure who I wanted to come out on top.

I will say, I wouldn't classify this as a thriller. It's more of a domestic drama with a bit of a sinister undertone to it. But most certainly not a full-on thriller. Even with that, I enjoyed this book all the way to the end.

I feel like it would help to set your expectation level; this isn’t a riveting tale, but it is interesting and somewhat unexpected. There’s no real bumps or severe conflict. It feels like the story is an inner tube on a lazy river; it flows and reaches its destination, but without the choppiness you’d expect from the book’s description.

We have two women harboring a secret. First, there’s Jordana- seemingly prim and proper, but full of vitriol; she’s formerly Jordan, who ran away 18 years ago and started a new life. Second, there’s Kerrie (new alias: Olivia); Kerrie fully believes that Jordan ruined her life all those years ago, as a result of a secret that the reader is not made privy to initially.

The two characters are reunited when Kerrie/Olivia sees an opportunity to infiltrate Jordana’s life by becoming her assistant. The story is told in alternating perspectives, present time. With that, we get a complete understanding of what makes Jordana tick and all the ways in which Kerrie attempts to establish trust so that she can enact revenge.

The thing is, Kerrie is wingin’ it on the revenge front. She doesn’t have a game plan, just the general notion that she wants to get payback for whatever Jordan did to her all those years ago. With that, this is not a sizzling tale in terms of retribution acts. Kerrie doesn’t start to do anything revenge-y until around 45% (kindle count), and even then it’s fairly tame. Her plan does pick up, and you learn the reason for Kerrie’s motives at 65%.

The fact is that neither of these women is ruthless, so don’t go into this novel thinking that there’ll be nail-biting encounters. Instead, you’ll get the story of two women and how their lives have shaped up since one fateful evening 18 years ago. For those who are interested - there’s quite a lot colorful language and descriptions, especially as it relates to Jordana’s thoughts on her social circle.

Earlier on, I would have given this novel 4 stars; but by the time I got to the end, I felt like the resolve was flat and too tied up with a bow. I never felt completely invested in either woman. I didn’t dislike them, and I had a general feeling that it’d be nice for life to turn around for them, but my emotions about the whole thing just stayed at a flat line the entire time. I do like the author’s writing style/vocabulary, and there were moments where I could see promise and real bite to the words. It was an easy read, but not particularly memorable. I liked how things turned out, I just wish there had been more conflict leading up to both the reveal and the resolution.

If you’re committed to fixing what went wrong in the past, well, then. Drama and getting even are where it’s at. In fiction. Go all in with this book. Because it’s all in in Emily Liebert’s novel PRETTY REVENGE.

Kerrie just lost her job and no sooner is she feeling sorry for herself when an idea comes to her that she must jump on it and out of that slump. She picks herself up off the couch in small-town Connecticut and high tails it to New York City where she is going to take on a new persona. Once there, she is going to exact her plan and become the best assistant there ever was to her nemesis. The one who took it all away from her. Unbeknownst to Jordana, who has also refashioned her life, and made not only a name for herself as the premiere wedding concierge, in Manhattan, but she is married to a wealthy investment banker who knows nothing of her past. And she plans to keep it that way.

What happens next is a frantic game of covering up tracks and maintaining multiple facades. Both women are running from something and toward a better life. Or so they think.

Revenge is sweet, isn't it?

I loved this story! It was a fast paced, quick read and not really a psychological thriller so I was pleasantly surprised. Olivia, also known as Kerrie, is out for revenge against the one person who she believes ruined her life. Jordana, also known as Jordan, is this person and she has issues of her own. The story is set within the wedding world of the rich and richer so you just have to laugh at the lengths these brides and their mothers go to for the perfect wedding! It was a great ending!

How far would you go to get revenge on the person who wronged you? Karrie is willing to go pretty far. It’s been 18 years since she has seen the woman she holds responsible for robbing her of everything she held dear. When an opportunity arises, she’ll stop at nothing to get the retribution she deserves.
Jordan is wealthy, successful and about to have her past catch up with her.
If you love a fast read with a scorned woman bent on revenge then this book is for you! I liked this, it was a quick read and interesting enough just didn't blow my mind.

It's quite the feat to make a book about revenge boring but the author managed it - I can't think of a novel that will leave even less of an impression than this one did. This will teach me to stop buying cheap Kindle books.
