Do you know how the flavor of gum you chew affects your appetite and cravings? Can you say whether it's better to do cardio then lift, or vice versa? Are you aware that your body's pH is thrown out of whack not only by what you consume but by electronics, air pollution, and even negative thoughts, and the resulting acidic blood levels lead to abdominal fat (not to mention heart disease)? You will know these things and a WHOLE lot more after reading this book.

But author Gina Paulhus isn't letting you off the hook that easy, though. Besides discussing all of the legitimate non-diet, non-workout factors that influence health and unwanted weight gain, she focuses heavily on concrete steps to take in both the kitchen and the gym.

I think even relatively healthy people who work out regularly could find value in this book due to the depth of her knowledge about how workouts, food, behavior, and the environment interact in relation to weight gain and maintenance but one of the many things I appreciated about this books was that I was able to read and really understand all of it without being a "gym rat" or "health nut." I didn't already need to know jargon or technical terminology to follow her thought process and advice.

While I appreciated getting advice from a pro (Paulhus is a personal trainer), it was sometimes more information than I could digest. I'm not very knowledgeable about weight training and many of the times she discussed Intervals and cycling, which are concepts I'm not familiar with, I got lost. It was a little challenging to pick it up just reading over it. I found places where the information seemed a bit contradictory ~ for example, in one place she said to avoid caffeine and, in another place, said it's OK in in certain circumstances.

I got the feeling that because she is trying to make the book accessible to everyone (regardless of their fitness goals), that there was probably more information than the average reader needed. For me, all the information about competitive athletes and running could have been left out. It would likely be easier to get the specific information you need for your own fitness journey by going to see a personal trainer in person. Get right to what YOU need instead of weeding your way through all the information in the book. Or, there could be two books - one for the beginner and one for the experienced athlete.

There were places where information...whole paragraphs it seemed, were restated. I was also distracted by grammatical issues (extra words in a sentence or words missing).

All that being said, there is a LOT of great information in this book and if you have more experience with weight training and exercise, you will probably have an easier time understanding everything and being able to pull out the information that is helpful for you. And I did, absolutely, learn some things that I will be adding to my fitness routine.
Many of the ideas in the book have been out there for a long time, but I love that she is myth-busting! There are certainly misconceptions about weight loss, eating and working out. Even though we've heard some of these ideas before, her no-nonsense approach helps you find ways to deal with the road blocks you put in front of your own fitness goals.

I've just finished reading Change Your Weighs and am happy to tell you about it. First of all - if you want to lose weight, that's fine. This book can help you. But it's more than just that. It's about how to deliberately live a healthy lifestyle and take care of yourself. And It's Not Boring! The author, Gina Paolino Paulhus has a fabulous sense of humor and writes with enough wit to keep the reader engaged, even when handling sensitive topics. I've been a physician for 30 years and have been an athlete my whole life and I still found the work engaging. It is responsibly written, well-referenced, and - bottom line - helpful. Read This Book!

As a personal trainer myself, I tried to like this book. However, it simply isint a user friendly plan to get your weight under control. Yes there are many tips but some of them refute each other. See her multiple opinions on caffiene.
I also think that the author has put a lot of claims in the book that lack any solid scientific evidence to back her claims. There are certain claims about correlations to pollution and other environmental, and hormonal factors that stand out as blatant disregard of truth.
For example, the author would do well to understand the difference between correlation and actual causation. The ignorance of the author is a rather embarrassing representation of a certified fitness trainer.
Skip it. So many better reads out there that will help you reach your goals. It's not worth the cost. Unless one seeks to be confused and mislead. I'm not saying the entire book is bad. But there are more than 1 bad apple in this book that spoils the entire take home message.
The author has a laymen style of writing and needed a good editor.

Reading this book is like having a casual conversation with an expert. I love the format - short topics full of answers from someone with years of experience. A very easy read - packed with bites of information I don't choke on. Sometimes I just want an answer to a question and don't need huge volumes of information that I don't necessarily want or understand - this book has the answers without all the confusion and background noise. Thank you!!

This book is the best book I’ve read in a very long time! I’d been struggling with keeping my diet and exercise on track for a while and this book broke it down as to why I just wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. It was a very easy read-no clinical words. Just to the point, everything made sense and I actually found that I couldn’t put the book down. It was as if Gina wrote the book for me!
