Where the Clouds Catch Fire (Clouds Aflame Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 38 ratings

Alynn has lost one family. Can she kill to protect her new one?

Change is the only constant in Alynn's life. Every few months, there's a move to another house, another town, another church. Finally, her father runs out of Ireland to wander through and takes what's left of his family to Scotland.
They never make it.

Alynn, the only survivor, ends up on a small island. She's taken in by Lukas McCamden, a monk and soldier trapped in a damaged body. But they're not alone. A Norse army led by Chief Konar the Mad is making its way to St. Anne's Monastery. In a desperate attempt to save their home, Lukas teaches Alynn how to wield a sword. She vows to fight off the Norse alongside him. If they win, she gets the home she's always wanted. If they're defeated, she faces death--or worse, slavery.

Alynn doesn't have much of a chance. But if it means a forever home, it's a chance worth taking.

Hello! My name is M.J. Piazza. I'm a dog-walking, wildflower-picking, Jesus-loving country girl who just so happens to write books. I've loved books my entire life--I still remember my three-year-old self sitting with my mom in our big red armchair as she read Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods to me.

I started my first novel when I was ten and got my first copyright before I got my driver's license. I enjoy writing historical works--from Viking to pioneers and everything in between--and my vivid imagination helps a lot.

I enjoyed every minute of being homeschooled, right up until when I graduated in 2018 and moved on to college. My plans for the future involve getting married, homeschooling my own kids, and living in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. For the moment, though, I'm content in Texas with my parents, my sister, and my rescue dog Zuma (affectionately known as Fuzz-Butt).

When I'm not writing, I'm studying, working at my day job as an after-school tutor, or playing piano for my church's worship team. I hope you enjoy reading my works. God bless!

A good read, especially if you like vikings and Jesus
Let's start with the prose. This was a very smooth easy read. Each chapter slipped past very nicely with nothing hard or annoying. 10/10 Next, the story. Believable. A couple of the twists were predictable for me but that didn't make them any less enjoyable. This being a historical fiction there were a couple of minor points I could be pedantic about and if you're in the habit of being pedantic about minor points you may, but none of them hindered the story being told. I really liked the setting, I haven't read anything in such a setting before, although that may be due to lack of culture on my part. The characters are familiar to me. This doesn't happen in too many books, and it made the read that much better. This is a good story. If you like bad stories, don't read this book. I shall be reading both sequels. Last note will be on the theology, which I only disagreed with on some minor points. If you're a Catholic, you might not like this book. If you're a Jesus prayer evangelical this might become your favorite book. The book is absolutely laced with Christianity, which I think is possibly the most historically accurate thing about it (Jesus prayer anachronism aside). I've not read a (medieval?) historical fantasy that acknowledges how woven into the setting Christianity would be. Read this book. Enjoy it. It's pretty good.

Its a charming historical fiction that takes place around 900AD. The story follows an orphaned girl named Alyssa who is adopted by a lonely monk named Lukas who teaches her self defense in the face of an upcoming viking invasion. The relationship between Alyssa and the Monk is the real heart of the story and will pull at anyone's heart strings that has been adopted or has formed a deep fatherly connection with someone when in great need. I really liked how the characters actually prayed in this story, an action I have found missing in many historical fictions even when it would be historically appropriate. It has a great ending that I honestly did not see coming so consider giving it a read if you like historical fiction,

*** Not a romance - but is a story of what makes a family as well as coming to know Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour and fighting to protect God's house and His Word. If you do not want to read scriptures & how they put their trust in him -then this is not the book for you.
    This is an amazing story of a young girl and leaving Ireland with her father & brother to live in Scotland - but there is heavy wind and she falls overboard. Things begin to happen. You also learn more when she dreams & thinks about what happened to her & her family when she was younger. *** Worth reading. {I will state that this is not a type book I normally read - yet I kept going back to it and read it within 2 days.}

M.J. Piazza’s “Where the Clouds Catch Fire” is a wonderfully written adventure that portrays the exercise of faith within the backdrop of challenging hardship. After tragically being separated from her family, the protagonist Alynn finds herself embracing a new life on a small island under the care of a solitary monk named Lukas who occupies an empty monastery and is girding himself against the inevitable assault of violent Norse invaders. A burgeoning understanding and affinity grows for the characters as a large part of the story unfolds through pastiches of daily life within the monastery – sometimes touching, sometimes tough, and sometimes laced with wit and humor – and the two grow in both faith and purpose to protect one another and the House of God. The artful writing style paints a vibrant picture of the story’s settings and the character growth, always under the apprehension of the looming, and seemingly insurmountable, threat of attack. As Christian fiction goes, this is a fantastic exploration of salvation through grace and God’s omnipresence for the believer. The only anachronism that initially pulled me out of the narrative were the numerous chapter and verse Scripture references since numbered segmentation would not be added to the Bible until hundreds of years after the story’s setting. However, I see the value of having the references there for anyone who may be interested in exploring these passages of Scripture for themselves. That aside, “Where the Clouds Catch Fire” is certainly a book worth reading for anyone who enjoys historical fiction, Viking adventure, or Christian literature in general. I will definitely be picking up the other books in the series!

I loved this book so much! I loved the character development and relationships. I really couldn't put it down. The plot was action packed and definitely kept me guessing at what would happen next. I would definitely recommend this book to everybody! I love that it could easily appeal to all ages. It's a great family read aloud and can also be enjoyed by an older, independent reader.

This was a very interesting story intertwining the Gospel message throughout. The strong family relationships that are developed are refreshing.

I think it's clear from reading it that the author has a talent for writing. Expert prose and such.
I just felt the story slogged in the middle.
