This Book Changed Everything: The Bible’s Amazing Impact on Our World Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 112 ratings

When George Washington had successfully led the American Revolution, he declined to become King George I of the USA. He chose to become the president, the first among equals. Biblically inspired political, social and economic vision radically changed the course of our history, our institutions and our ideals, besides, of course, bringing deep changes in our individual selves.

This Book Changed Everything, the latest book by a foremost Christian thinker of our age, Vishal Mangalwadi, is a tour de force that will redefine the way we look at the Bible’s transforming influence on everything that our modern world cherishes. The Bible, Mangalwadi argues, empowered little people who challenged the might of great empires and turned tiny nations into economic superpowers. It delivered humankind from superstition and gave them the courage and confidence to reshape the world. At the root of this revolution was the acknowledgment of God’s Revelation as the only reliable guide to build our lives as well as our nations on.

In 15 well-argued chapters, Mangalwadi demonstrates the role of Revelation on areas as diverse as epistemology, language, law, economics, political offices, nations and communities, church and tolerance. Chapters on journalism and literature by Jenny Taylor and Ashish Alexander respectively contribute significantly to this volume’s argument—that This Book, indeed, Changed Everything!

“When a brilliant philosopher from India gives his version of the history of the West, we should listen. In the 19th century, Tocqueville showed how the Bible made America different from France; today Vishal Mangalwadi shows why the Bible made Europe different from the rest of the world.”

— ERIC METAXAS, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Martin Luther and Bonhoeffer; Nationally syndicated host of The Eric Metaxas Radio Show

“I have come to believe that Vishal may well be Christianity’s most able global thinker. Not as famous as some, he travels deep into both the Bible and the historical record to uncover a treasure, and then he travels the globe sharing that treasure. I believe that he is one of the founders of the next great world-wide phase of Christian civilization.”

— JERRY BOWYER, Financial Economist, Author, President of Bowyer Research; Editor of Townhall Finance.

“This book changed everything? That is a bold statement. Can any book do that? Most people have no idea of the Bible’s influence upon our world. Vishal explores history, gives evidence and powerful arguments that the modern world is inconceivable without the Bible.”

— STEVE GREEN, Chairman, Museum of the Bible, Washington DC

“From his Eastern perspective, Vishal helps us Westerners recover our memory and true identity. Building on his earlier book, The Book that Made Your World, Vishal here re-tells us our own story and opens our eyes to recognize the true wellsprings of our civilization. Short memories breed short-sightedness. Vishal re-roots us in the past so that we regain a vision for the future in order to be effectively engaged in the present.”

— JEFF FOUNTAIN, Founder, Schuman Study Centre, Amsterdam

“Formerly Christian West has lost the foundational values and convictions for democracy; the ethics which valued human life, liberty, and dignity. Vishal Mangalwadi has worked amongst the destitute of India as well as taught in institutions of higher education. He has spoken to parliamentarians and senators, for he speaks with the clear perspective of a world pilgrim and a life experience that spans East and West alike.”

— PROF. DR. ROLAND WERNER, President, Zinzendorf-Institute, Marburg, Germany

I found this book extremely helpful and insightful. For a person with a reading disability it takes extreme effort to get throw a book of this size but this book was well worth the effort. It is probably the best book I have read sense collage.

Filled with insights and nuances into human history. Vishal Mangalwadi's writing and perspectives are both refreshing and revealing. Mangalwadi has weaved a wonderful tapestry and used beautiful threads to show how biblical thought and experience has impacted our world and our place in it.

"This Book Changed Everything" is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the history of the west and how its culture was shaped. Vishal Mangalwadi has masterfully brought together his rich knowledge of history and his keen insight as a philosopher and apologist, to show how the Bible shaped history to enable the modern world.
Vishal brings a unique perspective to the subject in that he sees Europe through the eyes of an Indian intellectual. Often that which is lost on one who is born and brought up in a culture stands out starkly to those from outside. From this vantage point Vishal is able to observe western culture and put a finger on the root cause of its advancement - the Bible.
For those to whom the Bible is near and dear to their hearts, this book shows it's impact beyond personal faith. For the student of secular history, politics, and literature, it gives a deeper view of the underlying ideas that directed their course.
In short, Vishal Mangalwadi demonstrates how the word of God has proved its own claim through history, of being "alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; judging the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12)" - and in so doing, changing hearts and raising men of conviction who change the culture, politics, nations, literature, language, law, and education - as the title rightly says - "This Book Changed Everything"!

Like the author's previous book, "The Book that Made your World", this one expands the context of how the whole world has benefited from the Bible. It has turned many "empires" into "nations". Empires that run on the government of tyranny into nations that follow the rule of law and the nation principles as prescribed in the Bible. Being from India, the author is an expert on showing how India was changed by the biblical principles from tribal tyranny into democratic government by missionaries and by biblical foundation pattern that was conveyed by US leaders to India. The author always uses ample Old Testament and New Testament verses to back up his agreements. I highly recommend this book.

I enjoy reading the insights of Mangalwadi because he is able to include details and connections that are more obscure, but are meaningful. This book continues with the theme of his previous book, but does include some new information and lays out the impact of the Bible on a variety of topics around the world. The only critique that I have is that there are some instances where he connects certain modern day institutions or practices with Biblical tradition and those connections are questionable at best without more details connecting the dots. That being said, the fact that so many things are connected with the Bible and with Christianity is very humbling and apparent. Both books are great reads and I had trouble putting this one down! I can't wait for book 2 in this series!! Highly recommend!

So much great history. And shines light on why our society is so fractured. Looking forward to the follow-up books.

Vishal describes the deep effect the Bible has had on Western Civilization. This work is very interesting and important as we see the basic Tennants of our own civilization come under assault.

5.0 out of 5 stars FRESH PERSPECTIVE: Different from Earlier Book
Reviewed in India on June 2, 2019
It is astonishing that Vishal Mangalwadi is able to do another full-length book on the topic of Bible’s impact on the world. He had written a book in 2011. Initially, I was a bit sceptical about this new book but here is found fresh material with fresh perspective! There is new content in this book, for example, the chapter on law and nation.
There are two chapters by two other writers on Bible’s impact on literature and journalism, which adds variety and depth to the book. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book

The first thing I liked about this book was that it was written by someone with a non-Christian background both in terms of religion and culture as it would be easy to accuse someone with a Christian upbringing to be bias towards the Bible. However, while I found some sections difficult to comprehend, I felt the author present a comprehensive case as to how the Bible has shaped our word for the better.
