The Last Human Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 206 ratings

In a world ruled by machines, a young robot encounters a girl who needs help in this children’s sci-fi adventure—soon to be a major motion picture!

Humans went extinct thirty years ago. And twelve-year-old robot XR_935 is just fine with that. Without humans around, there is no war, crime, or pollution. Everything runs smoothly and efficiently. Until the day XR discovers something impossible: a human girl named Emma. Now, Emma, XR, and two other robots must embark on a dangerous voyage in search of a mysterious point on a map. But how will they survive in a place where rules are never broken and humans aren’t even supposed to exist?

Narrated in the first person (first robot?) by XR,
The Last Human blends humor and action to tell a story about friendship, technology, and challenging the status quo no matter the consequences. It’s not just about what it means to be a robot. It’s about what it means to be a human.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Subtle humor surfaces when literal-minded robots try to understand human idioms, behavior, and emotions. And Bacon raises the story’s stakes and action level as the group works against the clock and unexpected new threats. A tech-fueled friendship adventure ideal for fans of Peter Brown’s Wild Robot series."―Booklist

"An amusing and upbeat adventure, with glimpses of a fading human footprint on the planet and a suggestion that there's hope for a shared AI and human future."―
Kirkus Reviews

"In this enjoyable sci-fi adventure, the stakes are believable and high, and the robots’ interactions are humorous, sometimes mixed up for comedic effect. Against a timely backdrop, Bacon (the Joshua Dread series) explores messages of friendship, tolerance, and cooperation with wit and thoughtfulness."―
Publishers Weekly

"Bacon’s story is full of twists and adventure, leaving readers guessing throughout. . . Recommended for fans of thrilling sci-fi with a strong ethical motif."―
School Library Journal

"Navigates experiences of culture clash, morality vs. legality, and friendship that will resonate with young readers in a changing world... An especially quick and rewarding read."―
The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Took it with me on a trip in the Sierras. I felt like I was escaping the with Emma. It helps that Emma is described exactly how my daughter looks. So... full immersion.

This felt special, like how you're reading a book and there are simple sentences and simple actions and things but those simple sentences and things have so many meanings and layers that you just stop reading and go WHOA WHOA WHOA HOLD IT RIGHT THERE MISTER AUTHOR SIR WHAT DID YOU JUST DO WITH MY FEELINGS AND WHATNOT I CAME HERE FOR THE FUN NOT THE SUBTLE LIFE LESSONS then you keep reading and you fall in love with every character and think you'll stop after this chapter but lol no that is so not happening so you keep going and your heart keeps grooowinggg and you're making a list in one part of your brain of who you'll be buying a copy of this for and another part of your brain is wondering exactly how much your kids will like it from heck yeah to fighting over who gets to keep it in their room...I guess what I'm saying is that yeah I really really liked this book and think you need to read it immediately but not my copy because I'm stealing it back from my kids so I can keep it in my room BWAH AH AHHHH.

This is such an entertaining and moving book! The story is narrated by a robot that has been programmed to believe that all humans are dangerous—and then it meets a 12 year old girl who appears be the last living human.
Three of the four main characters are robots: XR_935 whose designer has given him a complete database of history and information to do his job; his work companion Ceeron, a super strong robot that was designed to do heavy lifting; and SkD, who communicates only through emojis. When XR_935 encounters a young human, Emma, it is torn between its programming (humans = bad) and what it actually sees in this 12 year old girl. In choosing to help her, the robots embark on an journey filled with humor and adventure. Along the way, they discover some of the most wonderful qualities about humans.
I loved the way the robots helped each other see things from a new perspective from how they were programmed. Especially Ceeron, who has an unusual interest in human jokes and a database full of humorous words and expressions that helps XR_935 and SkD understand and appreciate Emma.
Although this book is targeting the middle school age group it has a lot to offer every age group. I'm always glad to find a book targeting middle school or young adults that I enjoy reading myself, especially if it makes me laugh and teaches me something. This is definitely that kind of book!

My 12-yo is a bookworm. I didn't know if she would like it because she is more a fantasy reader, but she loved the book and said "Mom, this is my new favorite!"
There aren't many Middle grade Sci-Fi and this one was particularly very well write. Thank you Lee Bacon.

"If you did not know any better, it might have looked like I was failing. But that was not the case. I was learning."

This story comes from the perspective of a robot, giving it a very practical, logical tone throughout. The first third of the book has a 'young' robot, learning about its world, and sharing it with us, so the power of the writing doesn't really start shining through until later in the book. Gradually the robot not only has an increased vocabulary, and more experiences, but as it ventures outside its routine, and comfort zone, it starts to both ask questions and truly express its personality in quirky and humorous ways.

The Last Human is, at heart, A story of three pals who decide to help the new kid in town with their crazy, self-appointed mission, only to come to realize that Emma has been struggling to trust them just as much as they did upon first meeting.

A wonderful story about the contradictions contained in each of us, the complexities of history and trying to understand it, and the struggles of creating a team, or a society, and working together.

I checked this out from my local library, and once it got rolling I really enjoyed it.

    Loved it!
I loved this story so much I bought the paperback as soon as I finished listening to it.
The Last Human was the second book this year that I've read about robots, (the first was the amazing In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune, highly recommend!) and they've both made me cry! This was such a good, sweet, and just all around entertaining story.

I borrowed it simply because Michael Crouch was the narrator, not expecting to love it as much as I did!

My kid enjoyed this book. Thumbing through it, I can see why; the story was creative and it seemed pretty entertaining. My son is 8yo for reference, but my 6yo was entertained too. It is more appropriate for 8 in general; it is good at that level.

Told from the perspective of the robots. Young robots more advanced than their earlier counterparts, but they are just teenagers who begin to question their very existence. Many young and young at heart readers will enjoy this story.
