A Ride to Remember: A Civil Rights Story Kindle Edition
A Ride to Remember tells how a community came together--both black and white--to make a change. When Sharon Langley was born in the early 1960s, many amusement parks were segregated, and African-American families were not allowed entry. This book reveals how in the summer of 1963, due to demonstrations and public protests, the Gwynn Oak Amusement Park in Maryland became desegregated and opened to all for the first time. Co-author Sharon Langley was the first African-American child to ride the carousel. This was on the same day of Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Langley's ride to remember demonstrated the possibilities of King's dream. This book includes photos of Sharon on the carousel, authors' notes, a timeline, and a bibliography.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2021A RIDE TO REMEMBER is a superbly written picture book. This true story takes the young reader back in time during the Civil Rights Movement when so many public places were not integrated. It describes how Sharon's Langley's ride on the carousel in The Gwynn Oak Amusement Park in Baltimore, MD on the first day the park was open to all, made a powerful Civil Rights statement. This first person narrative helps us feel the fear and the courage it took to walk through those amusement park gates on August 28th, 1963. It also reminds us of the simplicity and accessibility of the principals of the Golden Rule to unite us all. This book is perfect for librarians, teachers, and parents everywhere. You will have rich conversations that are relevant and healing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2020Beautifully illustrated and a story children can follow easily, A Ride to Remember is a wonderful book. I enjoyed the personal biographies of the author and the illustrator. My six year old grandson had many questions and as many solutions as to how we can all fix the pandemic of racism. For children of all ages!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2020Beautiful illustrations, a great story which was shared with culturally sensitivity, and age appropriate. The analogy of no one is first and no one is last on the carousel is brilliant
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2020This book is poignant, historical, and personal. It is a beautiful book that reflects a small personal victory against racism against the backdrop of the bigger historical picture. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2021A great book for all ages. My 6 year old son and 17 year old daughter enjoyed learning about all history.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2021I bought this book after attending a webinar about the integration of the carousel. I bought it for myself, but shall probably pass it on to my granddaughter when she's old enough to read it.
Amazon had the best price, as usual.
