Where I Come From: Life Lessons from a Latino Chef Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 480 ratings

America’s most prominent Latino chef shares the story behind his food, his family, and his professional journey: “A delicious reading experience.” —Kirkus Reviews

Before Chef Aaron Sanchez rose to fame on shows like
MasterChef and Chopped, he was a restless Mexican-American son, raised by a fiercely determined and talented woman who was a successful chef and restaurateur in her own right—she is credited with bringing Mexican cuisine to the New York City dining scene. In many ways, Sanchez, who lost his father at a young age, was destined to follow in his mother Zarela’s footsteps. He spent nights as a child in his family’s dining room surrounded by some of the most influential chefs and restaurateurs in New York. At sixteen, needing direction, he was sent by his mother to work for renowned chef Paul Prudhomme in New Orleans.

In this memoir, Sanchez delves into his formative years with remarkable candor, injecting his story with adrenaline and revealing how he fell in love with cooking and started a career in the fast-paced culinary world. Sanchez shares the invaluable lessons he learned from his upbringing and his training—both inside and outside the kitchen—and offers an intimate look into the chaotic and untraditional life of a professional chef and television personality. This memoir is Sanchez’s highly personal account of a fatherless Latino kid whose talent and passion took him to the top of his profession.

“An absolute page-turner, with gritty stories and hilarious anecdotes that make you understand the man behind the restaurants and TV shows.” —Gordon Ramsay

Review

“This book is a testament to family and the mentors that shape a young cook into a passionate, innovative, and ruthless chef. Aarón’s journey is an absolute page-turner, with gritty stories and hilarious anecdotes that make you understand the man behind the restaurants and TV shows.”―Gordon Ramsay

“Chef Aarón Sánchez’s memoir touched my soul. As a fellow Mexican-American, I grew up a lot like Aarón and shared the same kind of traditional Mexican cuisines every night at the dinner table. I have a new respect and understanding for the recipes that were passed along within my family, and I now have a deeper appreciation, because I recognize that this is connection to my past that will live on forever.”―
Oscar De La Hoya

"Where I Come From is more than a memoir, it is a true testament to Aarón’s passion, infectious energy, and humility. He celebrates his Mexican heritage and his drive to always be learning. As Aarón shares his life experiences, he demonstrates a deep commitment to craft, culture, family, and personal growth that is truly inspiring. This captivating book reminds us that food is dynamic, a form of cultural currency only truly appreciated when shared. Enjoy this honest and brilliant look into his life!"―Emeril Lagasse

“A delicious reading experience.”―
Kirkus

“Sánchez’s fans will relish this richly told life story of a chef celebrating his roots.”―
Publisher’s Weekly

"A frank and vulnerable account of his life, from his earliest days along the Texas-Mexico border to his youth in New York, then his TV career and fatherhood.”―

Aaron Sanchez is inspirational as hell.
First off I want to say that watching this man on master chef, I knew he was a person with a great opinion so I decided to look into his life some more, Eventually I came upon a YouTube video where he mentioned THIS book. It was actually a recipe for Chile Colorado, and I instantly knew I needed to read this wonderful heartfelt truly authentic piece of Chef Aarón Sanchez. Reading through this book I was instantly wrapped up in each page, word by word. Do not skip the introduction, if you are Latino you will instantly and definitely relate to this book even if you are not so into your culture. This book is very personal and while it is good for younger readers in terms of readability, it does mention some PG subjects such as sex, mention of overdose and drugs. I decided that the page I included in the review was one of the pages that I feel connect the reader to the authors soul, it shows that we are all human and experience loss as well as success, definitely not something I thought I would find in this book. If you are thinking about finding a good book to get lost in... this is IT.

This is really an outstanding book.

Aaron Sanchez is a good writer and is clearly extremely passionate about his food, family and heritage. His writing is so evocative and detailed, without being overly wordy. Take, for instance, just one passage in the introduction, when he bites in to some elotes/esquites (Mexican street corn, in this case on the cob), from a Oaxacan street vendor. The way he describes all the sensations, all the flavors in just a few short lines legitimately made my mouth water, and I could actually picture the scene and all the things going on around him.

Not to mention the way he describes mole - wow. Even if you've never had mole before (Thankfully I have enjoyed good, authentic mole already), I guarantee you will want to give it a try after this book.

Aaron comes off as a very approachable person, a very hard worker and just a good guy all-around.

His story is inspiring and a lot of fun to read, and he throws in some cool recipes for good measure. This isn't your standard chef memoir. It has a different, more "exciting" feel to it that I can't completely explain - But do yourself a favor and give it a shot. I think you'll be glad you did.

I had such a hard time putting this book down. What a terrific job Aaron Sanchez does in sharing all his amazing experiences with not only foods, but cultures all over the world.
I’m not Latina, I’m as Lily-white Irish American as one can get! I enjoy cooking in my retirement and have read a lot of chef biographies because I’m as interested in the maker as the food itself. I give much deserved respect to you Mr Sanchez for sharing and teaching us all what it’s like to cook and interact with the world with love and integrity.

Great book about Aarons history and lessons learned along the way. Have always liked him on Master Chef and wanted to know more of his life story. He has a lot of passion for cooking and learning and passing along encouragement to the next generation. He also speaks so highly of the chefs whom took him under their arm and became family to him as well as sharing many cooking secrets.

I was excited to read Aaron's story. He has always come across as knowledgeable, intelligent and kind as a judge on chopped and also on Top Chef. The book is very well written. He allows a look into what made him. His love for his mother and father was front and center. I was enchanted with the grit and wisdom and hard work from his mother. Of all the food network personalities he was the only one I enjoyed enough to invest time and money into learning more about. I was extremely sad to see his beautiful story and well chosen words were peppered with language that neither enhanced the story or even made a particular point. His "F" words simply ruined the experience and took away the admiration I had for Aaron. There was so much he had to share, and so much others could learn about trying and putting forth your best self. I had hoped to share the book with my nana daughter. There was much in it to learn, but I would be ashamed to see her read it because his use of filthy language. If I could return it I would. His intelligence and accomplishments were negated and I have lost respect for someone I truly admired. For those of you that use and enjoy four letter words, buy the book. There is much to learn about persistence and the accomplishment that comes from hard work. For those that would rather see a book written to inspire and share look elsewhere. I would have given 5 stars because he truly has created a well written story. The language just ruined it.
