Small Doses: Potent Truths for Everyday Use Kindle Edition
Anyone who has seen Amanda Seales’s acclaimed stand-up special I Be Knowin, her long-running TV series Insecure, or her groundbreaking gameshow Smart Funny & Black, knows that this woman is a force of nature. In both life and career, she has fearlessly and passionately charted her own course. Now she’s bringing her life’s lessons and laughs to the page with her signature blend of academic intellectualism, Black American colloquialisms, and pop culture fanaticism.
This volume of essays, axioms, original illustrations, and photos provides Seales’s trademark “self-help from the hip” style of commentary, fueled by ideology formed from her own victories, struggles, research, mistakes, risks, and pay-offs. Unapologetic, fiercely funny, and searingly honest, Small Doses engages, empowers, and enlightens readers on how to find their truths while still finding the funny!

“Amanda is Smart and Funny as Hell. Brave and uncensored, she will tell you the truth about yourself in a way that even you have to laugh at. She be knowing, ’cause she takes the time to consider and find out, but most of all because she cares. Brains are the new Tits.”―Cree Summer, Musician, Actress, Mama

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2019Small Doses is just that. A small dose of truths that everyone needs to read. Seales' perspective is from that of a black woman, and you're inclined to assume that only a black woman can connect, relate, and take away from these truths. But in fact, the gem dropperies in this book are for everyone! Each chapter will have you either agreeing (sometimes aloud), wishing you were personal friends with Amanda so you could send her a picture of one of the pages with a text that reads 'Let's discuss.', and/or self-reflecting.
Small Doses is an acknowledgement of our connections and/or relationships to one another's experiences. It's some of our most embarrassing moments. It's some of the best decisions we've made. It's us trying to figure it out. It's comfort food for the soul. It's insight, a great laugh, and an even better read. I've had this book for two days and I'm on my second read. Do yourself a favor: purchase this book and let Ms. Seales kick some flava in ya ear!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2019I love Amanda’s podcast and expected to feel the same way about the book. I love the designs and the visuals that accompany her thoughts and advice. I understand that she’s not for everyone but I find her way of approaching subjects so forwardly very refreshing. She doesn’t beat around the bush and sometimes that gives her a bad reputation but I appreciate getting informed in a straightforward manner and not having to dig around to get good advice. It’s definitely a great read if you are a fan of the podcast or of Amanda in general or if you’re looking good read whether you are black, white, or just happen to be white.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2020I’ve been a fan of Amanda for a minute but ever since her podcast ‘Small Doses’, I’ve grown to love her more. I love her witty spin and take on many of the topics she speaks of such as being a creative, self care, relationships and etc. , so when I heard she had a book I knew I had to have it. I’m so glad I do!
The book is just as good as the podcast and filled with so much information and insight, it’s a great read. I thoroughly enjoy and recommend it.
Happy reading (;
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2019I love Amanda Seales. Let me begin there. When I first heard she was taking the joys of her Small Doses podcast and writing a book, I was thrilled. The book is everything I expected and then some. I suggest getting 2 copies. One to highlight and write notes in and one to sit prettily on your bookshelf.
Gem after gem gets dropped. She's the epitome of SMART, FUNNY AND BLACK! The best friend you could ever have (in your head) giving you advice, telling jokes, sage wisdom and everything in between. I love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2019My wife, ex wife, is really into Amanda Seales. We used to listen to her podcast together on the ride to work before the arguing started. When I heard she had a book coming out I thought to myself this is the perfect gift for her. I almost got it signed but I had...other things to do that day.
A month or two later after reading the book and its wisdom my wife up and left me for Brent, her partner at the firm who water skis and whose body doesn't disgust her.
It's an amazing book in that it helped my wife see what kind of person I am. I just wish I had a book that could fix me.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2019It's cool. There were a few YAS 'witch' moments but most of it seem like common sense. Of course I'm being biased because everyone processes certain feelings and logic about given situations differently. It was also very casual, which I'm guessing is the goal, to reach out to a certain population.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2022I loved this book! From starting it to finishing it! She was very transparent! Girl was on point with everything! & her comedy in the book was a plus to making it not a boring book! If you don’t have it get it, I know you’ll enjoy it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2019I am half way through this book and I highly recommend it to everyone, especially for black women as this book reads like a life manual for us, based on her own experience and her knowledge of the historical experience of black folks that came before us. It’s a love letter for us!
I watch Amanda on Insecure and have been to her soul fulfilling and hilarious Smart, Funny, and Black game show in LA. I also follow her on IG and listen to her Small Doses podcast. She’s brilliant, talented, creative who fiercely wants to educate and uplift the black community. Which comes through in everything she does. This book is no different!
With it’s colorful pages and personal poems and artwork, in addition to the gems she’s dropping throughout, it’s a book unlike any I’ve read and holds your attention. I’m loving it and it’s inspiring me as well. Go get yours! I’m ordering more for Christmas gifts!

5.0 out of 5 stars Instagram in a book
Beautiful book filled with snippets of thoughts and opinions like an Instagram post. Not everything is agreeable as expected, but interesting nevertheless. This book is ideal for young people up to the age of 30.... Or anyone young at heart like myself! (I'm 39)
