'
The icy bleakness of the landscape is expertly reflected in the lives of many of the central characters. Deeply buried emotions are intermingled amongst present and past events. It is both atmospheric and unnerving in equal measure as characters struggle with their own personal demons. This is a really intriguing and powerful debut novel.' S J Mantle

A gripping novel ...a thrilling read. I read it in two sittings.' KJA, Amazon.co.uk

I am 65 and could so relate to Audrey's young memories as they are mine as well. I liked the character of these people, kind, strong independent but needing to love and be loved.

Audrey, a lonely widow, buys an old school boarding house with a tragic history. Years ago, it was a tough boarding school where shocking events in one school term are detailed in a diary found by Audrey. Meanwhile, Audrey is surprised when she falls for a charming widower until he is forced to reveal his connection to the former school.

Bridge To Eternity takes the reader along a creepy, twisty turning road full of rich characters - Romola Farr's pacy storytelling keeps the pages turning in a heart-warming story of loss, love, and redemption. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nice rendition of the love story. I especially liked the storyline that " you are never too old to find true love. "

This is a stunning debut by an author I will actively seek out in the future. Not an easy book to categorise — part ghost story, part romance, with a dual timeline that raises intriguing questions about events in the past at an abandoned school boarding house.
We first meet widowed Audrey Willatt on her way to the neglected building she's purchased. What are the reasons behind her move, and are the stories about the place being haunted of any real substance?
There were moments which gave me genuine chills.
The moon reappeared from behind the cloud and cast a small, human shadow on the far wall.
'Thank you' are two words that can mean a lot in the right context, but written in the dust that lay on the window pane across the top landing, they scared Audrey more than she thought possible.
The author also imbues the book with wonderful imagery — The windows, a mix of architectural styles, revealed no life within; copper pennies on the eyes of a dead body.
Beautifully written, with twists I genuinely didn't see coming, Bridge To Eternity is an accomplished piece of work which I highly recommend. And, best of all, I already have the follow-up Breaking Through the Shadows lined up on my Kindle…

Poorly written, jumps all over the place, main character doesn't ring true and half way through I didn't care about her or the haunted house I kept getting lost in.

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author and Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources blog tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

Bridge to Eternity is a very gentle and character-based style of ghost story.

There is a touch of The Woman in Black style suspense in the early parts of the book which had me quite jumpy during nighttime bathroom trips, but the malevolence of that kind of horror story is replaced here by a nostalgic melancholy that is more touching than terrifying.

The story mainly follows Audrey, an active older lady who has recently been widowed and is searching for something: meaning in her life; answers; some form of peace. There are plenty of mysteries and secrets here for Audrey to uncover, as she explores her new (old) house and gets to know the people in the local community. Parallel to these investigations is Audrey’s exploration of herself. Through reminiscences about her past and new experiences in the present, she finds herself at a crossroads; weighing up a safe future against the possibility for something… more.

The blurb also mentions Tina, who is far younger than Audrey but also at a crossroads and unsure of which path to take. The two woman act as catalysts, mirrors and antitheses on each others’ lives throughout the story, but Tina’s story is really more of a side-plot to the main thread.

The narrative often switches between characters, and from present to past then back again, which can be confusing in places, but the author generally slips orienting details in quickly before the reader becomes too lost. The past sections are quite upsetting at times, with some serious bullying of various characters, and the deaths (not graphically depicted) of a number of children. These bleaker parts are not dwelt upon, because the main focus of the novel’s tone is about hope, positivity and moving forward.

A little of something for everyone here, with some creepy suspense, some paranormal activity, some romance and some action-thriller drama. Fans of a well-written personal-journey mystery will find plenty to enjoy here.

She hoped that by opening up her lath and plaster walls to the whole town, there was a chance that somebody would let slip information about what had gone on in the old house, even if it was second or third hand. Her husband was no longer with her; her grown-up sons had their own lives to lead; and she had nothing but old age to look forward to. If the nagging voice in her head was ever to be quelled, she had to act now. She owed it to her younger self. Occasionally, she had been a bit frightened of the dark shadows and accompanying creaks, but she would not be deterred.

some places hold the echoes of people and events that happened there before - happy, sad, somehow emotionally wrought moments that hang in the air of a place far beyond when it first happened.

embracing some of those echoes, so that they can be celebrated or mourned, and those who had them, or those that are left behind, can move past those times, into a different, or perhaps more peaceful, future.

this town, this bridge, this school - much to be mourned and celebrated passed there - and not a small amount of the energy lingers. facing that, letting go of family pain, celebrating hurts, or joy, or mourning loss and youth - all this allows at least some of those now present life living to move on to their next phase - despite the efforts of some less than kind folks to benefit from the fortunes of others.

perhaps some echoes have rung out - maybe new ones will be now heard as part of the cost of recent deeds and misdeeds.

an intriguing KU read, with many stages of life, death, love, betrayal, and life beyond death playing out on small town places /stages.

I can't join in with the praise for this book. Not too bad a story, I suppose, but I got the feeling the author was trying to cram as much as possible in with no regard for reality or verisimilitude. Why did she include the two Russians? Padding? I found the writing style a bit weird, too. Bitty narative, simplistic language and superficial characters. The coincidences in the story were Dickensian in scale, but the story didn't captivate and I kept hoping for the story to finish as soon as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern romance, thriller and ghost story all in one!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2019
Sometimes, a story comes along that hooks you in such a way that one simply doesn’t want it to end. It’s certainly a rarity in my experience as a fan of romance, but Romola Farr’s wonderful new book has left me with an itchy feeling that I can’t wait for her next title! The vibrant visuality of the story made the whole exercise feel like watching a movie, and I’ll be surprised if this doesn’t become a reality once the word is on the street.

Farr nails her brilliant characterisation in such a subtle way that the players come alive naturally and unforced. I didn’t notice this at first, until I suddenly found myself irresistibly captured by the strange romance and creepiness of the journey.

The tale is about Audrey, a lonely widow who buys an old disused school that has a history of ghostly haunting. Years ago, the house had been a tough boarding school for boys where terrible events took place, much of which is related in a secret diary written by one of the boys, and now in Audrey’s possession. The revelations the diary contains, carry the story’s pitch for strange and unsettling things to come. In the meantime, Audrey finds romance with charming widower Malcolm, but soon discovers that her new love has an unexpected past, setting the scene for a trip along a dark and twisty road. The author’s energetic storytelling relentlessly keeps her readers engaged and guessing – and for me, an urge to cut to the last page – don’t do it!

Bridge to Eternity is a truly outstanding romance, thriller and ghost story sealed in a single package. It’s a cool and very modern love story and a hugely satisfying read.

A beautifully written novel tossed between two time lines that’s cleverly brought together by this author.
After recently being widowed, Audrey purchases an abandoned school boarding house in a quaint village where every local has a story, and behind every story is a secret. But when the house begins to reveal its own sad horrors will Audrey reveal hers?
What separates this book from the others is the subtle yet powerful emotions which trip from the first page through to the last. This novel left its mark on me long after I finished it!

This became one of my favorite books, I tried to read very slowly because I didn’t want to finish it soon. The characters are described very precisely, fitting exactly to their role. The atmosphere is always so lively, I was completely in the story. Love this novel !!!
