You Are My Friend: The Story of Mister Rogers and His Neighborhood Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 92 ratings

A heartwarming, “beautifully crafted” picture book that celebrates the work of Mister Rogers and carries on his legacy of kindness (Booklist, starred review).

Mister Rogers is one of the most beloved television personalities of our time, but before he was the man who brought us
Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, he was just little Freddie Rogers. Though he was often sick and had trouble making friends as a child, his mom and grandfather encouraged him to ask for help and explore the world. With their support, he learned how to better say what he was feeling and see the beauty around him. As he grew up, he realized he could spread the message of compassion, equality, and kindness through television. You Are My Friend is a gentle homage to Fred Rogers and shows how his simple message still resonates with us today: “There’s no person in the world like you and I like you just the way you are.” The book also includes a short biography of Fred Rogers’ life and a bibliography.

“A simply written, thoughtful tribute worthy of the incomparable Mister Rogers.” ?
Kirkus Reviews

**STARRED REVIEW**
"Writing with simplicity, emotional clarity, and a sense of purpose, Reid tells Fred Rogers’ story in a meaningful, sometimes moving way. Phelan’s fluid pencil-and-watercolor artwork brings that story to life on the page . . . A beautifully crafted, heartfelt picture-book biography."―
Booklist

"A graceful, quietly moving biography."―

"The book has a gentle cadence that it’s easy to imagine Fred Rogers’ famous voice into . . . Phelan’s pencil and watercolor art, casually impressionistic in its details, beams with soft warmth."―
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"A quietly moving picture book biography about the origin story of Mister Rogers . . . it is an ideal time to introduce the next generation to the pure magic of Mister Rogers and his legacy. His enduring message to children of all ages—that you are enough, just as you are—can never be overstated."―
School Library Journal

"The easy-to-read text is just right for those who may no longer watch Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood but who would nevertheless appreciate a reassuring encounter with an old friend."―

When Aimee Reid was young, she wanted to be a teacher. With an overturned laundry basket for a desk, she created lessons and even completed and corrected the homework! Eventually, Aimee earned a real desk at a high school where she taught English, Music, and Special Education.

Aimee was also a voracious reader and could often be found—curled in a corner, tucked in the crook of a tree limb, or crouched by a book rack in the grocery store aisle—carried away to the world of a book.

Now Aimee sends her own stories out into the world. It brings her great joy to think of other children nestled on a lap or cuddled on a couch reading good books to share.

Perfect for fans of Fred Rogers & His Neighborhood!
Fans of Fred Rogers will enjoy this picture book biography of the boy who would grow up and create the beloved children's television show, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Starting in his younger years of playing with puppets and learning the piano, this picture book gives us glimpses into Fred Rogers' life and how he came to be the incredible man he was. Having been bullied as a child, Fred found a positive way to express himself and his feelings; through music. He also had people in his life that accepted him and urged him to look for the good in the world. His childhood takes up a good portion of the story and focuses on how Freddie learned and grew to be the amazingly kind and accepting man that we knew him to be from his tv show. The watercolor illustrations are warm and friendly and do a wonderful job of reflecting the joy, wonder, and kindness that Mister Rogers has spread to the world. This picture book includes a brief biography of Fred Rogers in the back along with a select bibliography of other works about Fred Rogers.

This is the most adorable children's book about Mister Rogers. I love the story and the illustrations. It helps give an idea of how he became the person he was in a way children understand and adults can appreciate.

Although I was not a child during Mister Rogers' television days, I can really appreciate what he brought to the children who became his friends. His gentleness was perhaps the most apparent quality he shared; also kindness, patience, and calm. He had the gift of imparting bits of wisdom embedded in his stories and imaginative worlds, as well as introducing children to the citizens in the neighborhood. Mister Rogers was genuinely interested in the gifts his guests brought, whether artifacts or information. This book is a wonderful celebration of everyone's neighbor.
