The Magnificent Mrs. Mayhew Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 3,947 ratings

Milly Johnson, the Queen of Feel-Good Fiction and TheSunday Times bestselling author, is back with a "glorious, heartfelt novel" (Rowan Coleman, New York Times bestselling author) about a woman trying to find her own place in the world, who through love, loss, and the kindness of strangers, discovers everything she needs in a village by the sea.

Behind every successful man is a woman.
Behind the fall of every successful man is usually another woman.

Sophie Mayhew seems to have the perfect life. The glamourous wife of a rising political star who is one step away from the highest position in the government, she matches her husband in looks, pedigree, and money. But he has made some stupid mistakes on his way to the top, and some of those mistakes are just now threatening to emerge. Still, this can all be swept under the rug so long as Sophie the Trophy plays her part in front of the cameras. But the words that tumble out of Sophie’s mouth one morning on the doorstep of their country house are not the words the spin doctors drilled into her head.

Bursting out of the restrictive mold that has been tightening around her since birth, Sophie flees to a small village on the coast, a safe haven from her childhood days, where she intends to be alone. But once there, she finds a community that warms her soul and makes her feel as if she is breathing properly for the first time in her life. Sophie knows she won’t be left in peace for long, though, so she must decide: where does her real future lie?

Top reviews from the United States

2021 Update: This book was FINALLY released as an audiobook in the US and was SO worth the wait. Colleen Pendergast is the perfect narrator for Johnson's books. I want to give this book 6 stars!!! Such a wonderful story. Milly Johnson rules!!!!! In my opinion, this is her best so far. It has her wonderful heartwarming story, likeable characters, wonderful love story, and laugh out loud snarky humor with just a little hint of magic.

To readers who are not familiar with Johnson's books, her style is similar to Jenny Colgan's books especially the "Little Beach Bakery", "The Bookstore on the Corner", and "The Cafe by the Sea". If you love any of those books, I think you'll love Milly as much as I do.

2019: This book was wonderful! I didn't think that Milly Johnson could top her last book but, by gum, she did! I loved, LOVED this story! I loved the characters, I loved the classic Milly funny-snarky-witty dialogue, I loved the romance, and loved the little bit of magic and touch of spirituality and faith. I was so happy that the f-bombs were kept to a minimum and used mostly by the baddies, and LOVED the satisfying ending!

Milly Johnson, you are AWESOME!!!

And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to re-read the book again! :-)

Second reading: It was even better the second time around! Some people have commented on how this book is different in some ways from Johnson’s previous books. I think because it’s more romantic than sexy. I mean, one of the main characters is a Vicar! Also, the story includes some spirituality and mentions faith in God without being preachy. So, bottom line is that it includes all those great elements that we’ve learned to love about Molly Johnson’s books with a little less profanity and sex.

Well, I won't add to the praises I have poured upon all of the previous books I have read by Milly Johnson for fear of being repetitive. I am very happy that this book and the previous book I have read by this stupendous writer, The Perfectly Imperfect Woman, have branched out from Milly's usual tried and true formula (3 middle-class ordinary women friends in bad relationships, one a hopeless doormat, find their mojos and happy endings). In this one, we have a lovely young girl from a cruel and cold family who has been turned into a Stepford wife. She is posh, rich, and famous. She breaks out of her virtual prison as the appendage of a rising politician and hides away in the one place she was happy in for one summer in her girlhood. She is embraced by the small village community, makes some wonderful friends, and finds love with the vicar. There is always some tension and suspense in the background because you know her uncaring family, her psychopath husband and his political machine are looking for her. Will they find her? Will she return to her former role as "Sophy the Trophy"? Or will she find her true self and be strong enough to resist the forces who want to use her and abuse her and find her happy ending?

Well, we know how it will all end. But the value is in the journey, not the destination. As usual, there is plenty of wit and comedy to spare as well as the touching, sad, and scary moments. Milly is a master at making the reader love and care about her protagonists and their fates. And her ebullient voice makes every page a treat.

Milly Johnson did it again. She made me fall in love with all things Loste, including Plum the kitten and a blue-eyed Vicar. She also reminded me that we shouldn't judge others based on what we think we know about their lives. Some people are just trying to hold it all together with one fraying thread afraid to let their inner "mess" show. Sophie Mayhew's thread unraveled completely. And instead of trying to stitch it back together, Sophie designed a whole new life, proving it's never too late to go after what you really want.

I’m always so happy to discover a new author. This was my first Milly Johnson book, but not much last. I fell in love with the characters in this book and the changes that Sophie made to her life. A thoroughly enjoyable book.

I loved this book. Mrs. Mayhew is a political wife who has been molded for this position, all of her life. But underneath her composed exterior is a broken heart. All of the characters are interesting, conversations are clever, and the chapters just zip by quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2020
I bought this book entirely because of the brilliant reviews I had read and I wasn't disappointed, far from it. It was such a good story and I couldn't wait to get back to it each day to find out how the story unfolded.

During the situation which we are all in at present, I thought I would treat myself, and I was so glad I did. The characters were believable, and I found myself sympathising with Sophie all the way through. It had warmth, emotion, humour, a feel good factor for everyone, and I should think make readers think about what is important to them.

Although it had political issues, it was well described and explained, and gave an insight into relevant procedures.

I read a lot of detective/crime novels, which are also very good. But it was nice to read something with a completely different subject. So this was my diversion this time.

I have read lot of Millie Johnson's books, but this one is, by far, the best for me. So if you haven't read any yet this is a good one to start with.

Very Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Mayhew is a faithful daughter, a loyal wife and finally loyal to herself

Mrs. Mayhew is a magnificent woman; she does exactly what is expected of her. Though she's hurt many times by her family, her husband, her so-called friends, she still goes on.
In the end she has to make some changes though, otherwise she would loose herself and remain unhappy for the rest of her life. That's not happening and she does find her happiness.
